Eric Holder on the Arizona Immigration Law

What’s Attorney General Eric Holder’s position on the Arizona immigration law? He’s critical of it even though he admits he hasn’t read it:

“Despite repeatedly voicing concerns about Arizona’s new immigration enforcement law in recent weeks and threatening to challenge it, Attorney General Eric Holder said Thursday he has not yet read the law — which is only 10 pages long.

“I have not had a chance to — I’ve glanced at it,” Holder said at a House Judiciary Committee hearing when asked had he read the state law cracking down on illegal immigrants.

On Thursday, Holder said he plans to read the law before reaching a decision on whether he thinks it’s constitutional.

When asked by Rep.Ted Poe, R-Texas, how he could have constitutional concerns about a law he has not read, Holder said: “Well, what I’ve said is that I’ve not made up my mind. I’ve only made the comments that I’ve made on the basis of things that I’ve been able to glean by reading newspaper accounts, obviously, television, talking to people who are on the review panel…looking at the law.”

As a lawyer, Holder knows better than to speak out on a law without even reading it or understanding what it says. Clearly he’s a politician first and a lawyer second, and that’s not what an Attorney General is supposed to be.

But the Obama Administration isn’t serious about immigration laws as shown by this LA Times story about U.S. Customs and Border Commissioner Alan Bersin — an Obama appointee and former U.S. Attorney — who was “scolded” by a Senate committee for not filling out and keeping I-9’s for his household employees. His excuse? He didn’t know the law.

  1. Typical lefty, rushing to judgment without benefit of either review or facts.

Put in place to further the ideology of the man who appointed him. Elections DO have consequences and let’s just hope and pray those Americans who voted for Big Zero won’t get fooled again.

  2. Holder has previously shown that he is incompetent as a lawyer. This is not the first time he has misstated law.

  3. Don’t be too quick to condemn Eric Holder. Maybe he can’t read, that might explain the problem.

  4. I am not surprised he has not read it. I am very surprised he admitted it. Very surprised he`says he only referred to news and TV accounts and a quick “glance”. Perhaps, though, he has read the polls and/or has been clued in by his staff who have read the law. Maybe he is now planning to have an “epiphany” with respect to its legality upon reading the actual bill. Perhaps that federal lawsuit is not looking so good to the administration any more.

  5. We’re the problem, not Holder – if we just stopped being a nation of cowards and had that national conversation on race, all will be well.

This administration has been notorious for jumping to conclusions—-is this another beer summit in the making? Hey Eric, you bring the pretzels this time.

  7. Gov. Chris Christie discussing whether his tone is “confrontational”. Not to be missed.

Comment from TheQuietMan at Ace’s about this:

Barry (Obama): How did they get his response on his teleprompter so fast? I mean it took my people weeks to come up (with), “Rush can play with himself.”

  8. And from that clip above, I must say I love the reaction from Christie’s aides. I think each of them is remembering a time when they received a righteous ass-kicking from a perturbed boss and none of them seems to hold it against him. Which is one of the true signs of an effective leader.

    Let’s rephrase that:

As a lawyer, Obama knows better than to speak out on an arrest without even reading it or understanding what the circumstances were. Clearly he’s a black man first and a PotUS second, and that’s not what an PotUS is supposed to be.

Incompetence Just Sorta Goes All The Way Around this admin, don’t it…?

Why is “illegal immigrant” a race, now? Still trying to figure that one out.

  13. Holder: “I’ve only made the comments that I’ve made on the basis of things that I’ve been able to glean by reading newspaper accounts, obviously, television”

    — That’s right. Madcow & Olbermonkey told him that it’s bad; therefore, it’s bad.

Maybe he’s still reading the health care reform act, trying to find out what’s in it.

  15. I think you are missing it.

Holder does not need to read the law to understand what the writers of the law intended. He is obviously quite certain of what the law was intended to do, and that is all that matters.

    The text is irrelevant.
