Stock Market Tanks, Then Partially Recovers

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 5:39 pm

As always, Hot Air has the best analysis, including the tip about the P&G error shortly after it happened.

Down 1000 points at one point. Wow.

  1. DRJ, you need to keep up.
I was posting on this in the “Why Legislative Interpretation….” comment stream in real time.
And, it bottomed at a loss of only 997!!!
Up & Down in less than an hour….there are a lot of nervous traders, and it took just a typo to set them off.
Dow…-600 in the last three days.

  3. It was exhilirating! We need a correction. I’d gladly bid $40 for PG, but it looks like a lot of juicy trades are getting cancelled. 🙁

  4. A convenient mistake for someone. Isn’t it rare to have so many NYSE stock trades cancelled?

  5. DRJ, even if this was just a typo and a clever investory taking advantage, it’s easy to see how someone could make a quick billion by paying the right person to make an error.

I guess the real point is that things are just so touchy right now that it takes a lot less to send stocks tumbling. Everyone is trading on everyone else’s confidence in our economy, which is bolstered by BS right now. As soon as someone suspects everyone else is going to notice and sell off, they try to sell off first.

Things are just too perilous. It’s a much more advanced case of the emperor not wearing any clothes.

  6. A lot of those trades were automatic, computer-generated activity sparked by the mis-trade in P&G, and that is the basis for un-winding them. Think of it as a horse-race where most of the field is knocked out, and the track refunds all tickets on that race.

  9. Investing in the stock market now is like playing liar’s poker. There is very little chance of anything but very short term success. We are in the end of a bear market rally. Trading in this sort of market is a good way to get scalped.
