The Tea Party and Liberal Hysteria

Filed under: Politics — DRJ @ 1:55 am

[Guest post by DRJ]

Some liberals pundits believe enraged right-wing extremists are close to mass lawlessness, if not mass murder. Take, for instance, New York Times columnist Frank Rich:

There’s nothing entertaining about watching goons hurl venomous slurs at congressmen like the civil rights hero John Lewis and the openly gay Barney Frank. And as the week dragged on, and reports of death threats and vandalism stretched from Arizona to Kansas to upstate New York, the F.B.I. and the local police had to get into the act to protect members of Congress and their families.

How curious that a mob fond of likening President Obama to Hitler knows so little about history that it doesn’t recognize its own small-scale mimicry of Kristallnacht. The weapon of choice for vigilante violence at Congressional offices has been a brick hurled through a window. So far.”

Rich bemoans the fact that a “middle-of-the-road” health care bill could incite an “unglued firestorm of homicidal rhetoric, from ‘Kill the bill!’ to Sarah Palin’s cry for her followers to ‘reload’.” Ultimately he decides the last time America saw such lawless rage was the “national existential reordering that roiled America” as a result of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The point, Rich concludes, is some people just can’t stand a black President and a wise Latina Supreme Court Justice.

And just in case you still don’t get the message that These People Are Dangerous, Rich punctuates his prose with angry and violent imagery:

“In fact, the current surge of anger — and the accompanying rise in right-wing extremism — predates the entire health care debate. The first signs were the shrieks of “traitor” and “off with his head” at Palin rallies as Obama’s election became more likely in October 2008. Those passions have spiraled ever since — from Gov. Rick Perry’s kowtowing to secessionists at a Tea Party rally in Texas to the gratuitous brandishing of assault weapons at Obama health care rallies last summer to “You lie!” piercing the president’s address to Congress last fall like an ominous shot.

If Obama’s first legislative priority had been immigration or financial reform or climate change, we would have seen the same trajectory.”

Meanwhile, Sherman Yellen writing at the Huffington Post looks at Tea Partiers and sees murderers like McVeigh, Hitler, Oswald and Booth:

That Acrid Smell in the Air? Timothy McVeigh-ism
***
“Of course no two madmen or assassins with a grudge against the world are ever quite the same. But the common thread that runs through them is a deep sense of victimhood. McVeigh had it, Hitler had it, Oswald had it, Booth had it, and I can see and hear reflections of that dangerous victimhood in the far right today. The anti-government, in this case anti-Obama rhetoric is hate filled, some of it race based, and contains within it an unappeasable grudge — the us against them kind that sets off explosions, kills the innocent, and destroys the security of the country it claims to protect. If we sniff we can smell the burning fuse. There is no constitutional right to inflame sociopaths to commit murderous acts. Cool it Sarah, and all you Republican leaders who are playing to your base, using code words that are well understood by many who feel victimized because of the recession (just as Germans became targets for Hitler’s rhetoric because of the Great Depression). Sorry, reader, I’ve done it, slipped it in but I am truly worried by the parallels and hope against hope that I am wrong.”

How do you reason with that?

H/T Eric Blair.

  1. Sort of an eclectic mixture, jumping from the Fort Hood hugs lady to Frank Rich foaming at the mouth.

I have a book “The Day Lincoln was shot” by Jim Bishop. Always thought it would make a riveting movie. I even started casting the parts in my head.
John Wilkes Booth would be played by George Clooney. No-one else could do that part justice.
    It’s almost type casting.

  2. I guess it is eclectic but it’s my way of staying balanced. No matter how dark the skies, there’s always light.

  3. “How do you reason with that?”

You can’t. Reason is not their goal. The victims of their hatreds: Xians, the Juice, Rethuglicans, capitalists, white will suffer by the millions. They’re working themselves up to extermination.

  4. “How curious that a mob fond of likening President Obama to Hitler knows so little about history that it doesn’t recognize its own small-scale mimicry of Kristallnacht.”–Frank Rich, mouthpiece of the Dems

Spare me. The only “Kristallnacht” we’ve ever had in this country was the one carried out by the vermin in the Democrat Party in the Reconstruction era south.

You know the one I’m talking about? The one where the Democrats (aka the scum of the earth) murdered white and black Republicans in a reign of terror that went on for years.

“The first Klan was founded in 1865 by Tennessee veterans of the Confederate Army. Klan groups spread throughout the South. The Klan’s purpose was to restore white supremacy in the aftermath of the American Civil War. The Klan resisted Reconstruction by assaulting, murdering and intimidating freedmen and white progressives within the Republican Party. In 1870 and 1871 the federal government passed the Force Acts, which were used to prosecute Klan crimes. Prosecution of Klan crimes and enforcement of the Force Acts suppressed Klan activity. In 1874 and later, however, newly organized and openly active paramilitary organizations such as the White League and the Red Shirts started a fresh round of violence aimed at suppressing Republican voting and running Republicans out of office. These contributed to white conservative Democrats regaining political power in the Southern states in the late 19th and early 20th centuries…”

“…The Klan attacked black members of the Loyal Leagues and intimidated southern Republicans and Freedmen’s Bureau workers. When they killed black political leaders, they also took heads of families, along with the leaders of churches and community groups, because people had many roles. Agents of the Freedmen’s Bureau reported weekly assaults and murders of blacks. “Armed guerilla warfare killed thousands of Negroes; political riots were staged; their causes or occasions were always obscure, their results always certain: ten to one hundred times as many Negroes were killed as whites.” Masked men shot into houses and burned them, sometimes with the occupants still inside. They drove successful black farmers off their land. Generally, it can be reported that in North and South Carolina, in 18 months ending in June 1867, there were 197 murders and 548 cases of aggravated assault…”

“…Klan violence worked to suppress black voting. As the following examples indicate, over 2,000 persons were killed, wounded and otherwise injured in Louisiana within a few weeks prior to the Presidential election of November 1868. Although St. Landry Parish had a registered Republican majority of 1,071, after the murders, no Republicans voted in the fall elections. White Democrats cast the full vote of the parish for Grant’s opponent. The KKK killed and wounded more than 200 black Republicans, hunting and chasing them through the woods. Thirteen captives were taken from jail and shot; a half-buried pile of 25 bodies was found in the woods. The KKK made people vote Democratic and gave them certificates of the fact…”–wiki

Dave to Democrats: You can take that Kristallnacht crap and ram it right up your collective ass. We only have one party in America that resembles the Nazis…and that’s YOUR political party.

    Scumbags.

  5. Right, you are, Dave, that was the ‘terrorist insurgency’ that forced the US to ‘redeploy’ from
the South, hence almost a century of southern fried apartheid, topped off with the likes of Wilson, two
generatations later, who sanitized the KLan, by segregating DC.

    ian cormac (349188)

  6. They’re playing (surprise!) the racist card & fear mongering in order to characterize the entire right as extremist. In other words: they are lying in order to distract people from carefully considering & examining what the president & Congress have been doing to our nation. It’s a game of: “Hey, look! You have to keep these guys in power. Why? Well, look at how crazy the other side is!”

When one cannot rely on touting the accomplishments of those he supports, his only recourse is to in-effect beg & bribe people into distrust of the opposition. This is what Frank Rich does — Pulitzer committee take note.

    Icy Texan (192cb4)

  7. When someone can devote an entire article about how opposition to a bill is really all about racism and can’t find a single racist example (or, at least, a single example that hadn’t already been debunked with video evidence by press time) to cite in support of their thesis, that’s all the proof you need the person in question is full of shit. As for all the venom he claims is being hurled on this issue, I’ve got 50 cents in change in my pocket. Anyone else wanna help chip in and buy Mr. Rich a mirror?

  8. Yes, I can’t believe for one second the vicious lies of the leftist crowd, even though I’ve seen a pic of Dale Robertson with a sign saying ‘niggar’ (which evidently he can’t even spell correctly).

    JEA (b29a48)

  9. That Rich gets away with connecting Tea Party activism to the German embrace of National Socialism is testimony to the left’s enormous ingnorance. Tea Partiers want only to limit government and re-establish the Constitution as the foundation of a limited government’s conduct. They don’t feel victimized by the recession but by the conditions of an evergrowing, overbearing government, titanic debt and the lack of effort (or plan) by either party to recognize these conditions as the cause of, not the solution to, eventual economic failure.

The desperate masses of Germany embraced the uber nanny-state and willfully surrendered their God-given rights to a central authority in exchange for “security” as promised by Hitler.

Rich, HuffPo and the rest of the elites of the left understand this perfectly. They also know that their audience is largely made up of ignorant people easily incited by the term “Nazi” and without a clue as to what the Nazis stood for.

Rich’s defininition of Nazi would include Thomas Jefferson and Patrick Henry, to name just two, as he spews his filth under the protection of the Constitution borne of the founders’ own surge of anger.

    Matador (176445)

  10. JEA, were you throwing rocks during the WTO protests? Did you shoot at Lou Dobbs’ house in New Jersey? Did you bomb the Pentagon or the UW-Madison Math Research Lab? Did you shoot at Ford and Reagan?

    PCD (1d8b6d)

  11. John Wilkes Booth would be played by George Clooney

Much better would be if Sean Penn got the part – then after shooting Lincoln, he jumps down on the stage and shouts “I hope all of you get rectal cancer!”

    Dmac (21311c)

  12. JEA, were you throwing rocks during the WTO protests?

No, he prefers a much tamer version of protest – throwing rocks at Starbucks.

    Dmac (21311c)

  13. Let’s see. Democrats embark on a campaign of shredding the constitution, dirty deals, closed door negotiations, demonizing of ordinary Americans and wind up with a flawed bill opposed by 59% of the country that 62% of the people want repealed and they expect us to applaud? I think something is wrong with them, not us.

Then again, it is not surprising that the Cartoon Network gets better ratings than MSNBC.

    Vivian Louise (643333)

  16. I wonder how many of those “at least dozens” of people at the Searchlight TEA Party found out they were part of such a small crowd upon watching CNN. With all these “dozens” of people nationwide being involved in TEA Parties and with word-of-mouth, the lamestream media is fighting a losing battle for their perception of integrity.

  18. One can easily write off Rich’s hysterical rant, but the comments section, where one often gets a bead on the average joe’s take, is pretty troubling. There are a whole lot of people becoming unhinged over this issue; they take it seriously, and they’re working themselves up into a frothing lather over the right’s *right* to protest and dissent.

The thing is, they don’t want rational thought or reasonable discourse to get in the way of this tsunami of righteous anger. People like Frank Rich foment that anger, the hysteria swells, and who knows once it breaks, what the impact on Tea Partiers (and any right leaning protester) will be…

    ian cormac (349188)

  21. but the comments section, where one often gets a
bead on the average Joe’s take…

The comments sections of the newspapers and network websites along with those at the Huff, Daily Beast, Politico etc. are infested and over-run with paid OFA tools. These comments no more reflect the take of average Joes than than do the brain farts of Henry Waxman or Keef Olbermann.

I call bullshit on this. I don’t believe for one second that Sherman Yellen is sorry about any of this hateful rant or going Godwin. He is not the least bit worried, and he is certainly not hoping against hope that he is wrong. This is just emotional manipulative slop served up with a faux angst and a wringing of hands. Poor little girl.

What he is, is a manipulative tool who has done precisely what he set out to do when writing this tripe: rile the masses, fuel the fire, and give an unhappy group of people a convenient receptacle for their hate. And right now, there’s no better receptacle to dump all that hate into than Palin and the right. As long as Palin is in the picture, self-righteous do-gooders like Yellen will be able to make a buck churning out word vomit like this.

The more we become enlightened as to what is really in the bill, the more reason the Dems will have to keep us distracted and have our focus – and emotional energies – turned elsewhere. The game is to keep us on the defensive in the public eye while they assume the I’m-so-shocked-by-the-right’s-, racist-flame-throwing-behavior offense.

Thanks elissa for the link, here is one sentence from the FBI affadavit:

in other words, either a little strange and delusion or a lot of strange and delusional

(FYI: “Enoch” is a figure in Genesis in a small passage and mentioned in another small passage in the NT. The OT states, “Enoch walked with God, and was no more, because God took him”. In other words, Enoch was thought to have been translated into heaven without dieing, as was also the more familiar character Elijah.)
