A New Era in U.S.-Mexico Relations

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met today in Mexico City with Mexican Foreign Minister Patricia Espinosa. I’m sure this topic was near the top of their discussion list:

“The murders of three people with ties to the U.S. consulate in Juárez were attacks by drug cartels against the U.S and Mexican governments, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said today in Mexico City.

She said drug cartels were responsible for the increased violence in the border region.

“There is no question that they are fighting against both of our governments,” Clinton said in closed-door remarks that were reported by the Associated Press. “Tragically, that fact was underscored on March 13th,” she said, with the murders of two Americans and a Mexican affiliated with the U.S. consulate in Juárez.”

The American victims were U.S. Consular employee Lesley A. Enriquez, who was pregnant, and her husband Arthur H. Redelfs, an El Paso County Jail detention officer. Their 7-month-old daughter is now an orphan. Also killed in a separate but simultaneous shooting was a Mexican man married to woman who works at the U.S. Consulate. He leaves behind 3 young children.

  1. “There is no question that they are fighting against both of our governments,”

It’s unfortunate that Clinton doesn’t have the same clarity of vision vis-a-vis Hamas/Fatah vs. Israel.

  2. They were too busy discussing whether the new amnesty bill will allow our soon to be new dual citizens to vote on both sides of the border.

  3. Given the fact these people have no intention of ever enforcing the border or our immigration laws (and have every intention of doing the exact oppoisite) then we can anticipate them resurrecting the old canard.

Due to lax gun laws, the US is the major source of guns in Mexico. And they’ll trot out the old lie that some majore percentage of guns found at Mexican crime scenes originated in the US.

So maybe we should start being preemptive with the facts. The Mexicans only ask us to trace a small percentage of guns used in crime. The Mexican government never asks the US to trace the vast majority of guns used in Mexican crimes.

They only ask us to trace those which appear to be from the US. Of that small percentage of guns that appear to be from the US, most are.

But in addition to that, you only have to take a look at their smuggling routes and the amount of money they have to know they can buy what they want where they want. And what they want is military grade hardware in large quantities. Not look-alike semi-auto copies bought in small purchases from border gunstores.

If you really believe that US retail stores are a major source of firearms to smuggling cartels south of the border, you’d have to be crazy or stupid or both. Exhibit A for that proposition is Wesley Clarke, who believes it.

Despite the fact these cash-flush outlaws have demonstrated they have access to supplies of RPGs, Clarke beleives there is no one in the countries they deal with throughout central or South America who would be so corrupt as to sell them firearms or ammo. Or Asia, for that matter. No, those armaments must come from the US.

But even if you really, really believe that, it’s probably unpatriotic to point out that effective border enforcement would stop smuggling no matter which direction the contraband was moving.

Yeah, unpatriotic. That would prevent the influx of these freeloaders. Who the dems want to let get addicted to the bennies of being an American free of charge before they turn them into loyal leftist voters. And then start charging them.

Hey, don’t drug dealers work that way?

  4. Did Hillary observe the new bowing protocol?

  5. “There is no question that they are fighting against both of our governments,” Clinton said.

Then I take it that Obama will engage in a dialogue with the drug cartel leaders without any preconditions.

  6. JVW,

I think there’s a place for you on the staff of the Obama Administration. You have a knack for articulating their preferred policies.

  7. Meanwhile, I just read today that the bodies of some Mexican cops were found chopped up and stuffed in bags, outside of Acapulco.

A large percentage of the populace of Mexico deserves a good part of the blame for the debacle that their society has become. After all, they’ve politically been similar to the voters found throughout urban America: Consistently, nonsensically of the left, with rare exceptions, forever willing to give a million benefits of the doubt to Mexico’s version of the Democrat Party.

  9. There you go again, JVW.

  10. Ah, DRJ, I so love it when you quote Reagan.
