Keep the Change

[Guest post by DRJ]

President Obama takes a victory lap: “This is what change looks like.”

Texas Governor Rick Perry says Keep the Change:

“Unfortunately, the health care vote had more to do with expanding socialism on American soil than it does fixing our health care finance and delivery systems. The Obama health care bill undermines patient choice, personal responsibility, medical innovation and fiscal responsibility in America.

“As passed by the U.S. House, the bill will cost Texas taxpayers billions more, and drive our nation much deeper into debt. Congress’s backroom deals and parliamentary maneuvers undermined the public trust and increased cynicism in our political process.

“Texas leaders will continue to do everything in our power to fight this federal excess and find ways to protect our families, taxpayers and medical providers from this gross federal overreach.”

This is the only State response I found tonight. Feel free to leave links to your State Governors’ responses so we can compare notes.

EDIT: Texas is joining other states by challenging ObamaCare in court.

  1. Now comes the hard work of removing Democrats from office, and reversing this catastrophic legislation.

Fortunately, while an uphill struggle, it is in reach and we’ll accomplish it.

  2. Same goal but different approaches:

  4. At what point to Democrat governors begin to realize that ObamaCare forces them to cough up more state funding for the estimated 16 million citizens who will be added to Medicaid rolls? Oh yeah, the answer is in 2016, when the bill transitions from Federal funding to state funding (except for our friends in Nebraska). Just in time for Obama to be easing into retirement. Assuming, of course, that he hasn’t disposed of the 22nd Amendment.

  5. I apologize in disagreeing with JVW. The number of people added to the free health care role will be more like 40M than 16M. Obama intends to include anyone who applies, not just citizens.
examine his recent statements about immigration “reform”.
His sole purpose is the conversion of the US into a neutered, European socialist state where the people depend on the government for every need.

I am not a “Birther” but Obama has revealed himself to be someone who does NOT think like an American.

Statism, Socialism, and Collectivism are NOT American Values.

This man and his friends in congress and the media need to be removed from power before their ideals can be used to destroy this nation.

  6. JVW, I think the unspent stimulus will be used to shore up the states until Obams has enough cover to run again.

I’m sure it was all planned that way. Why else is the money still sitting there?

  7. Since the issue of healthcare is also a story about the differences between liberals and conservatives — and since I’ve come to realize that the supposed compassion and generosity of liberals compared with conservatives is, in fact, a load of crap — I couldn’t help but snicker when I read the following.

This article doesn’t assess the likely politics of the people who were being tested, but I bet a higher (if not significantly higher) percentage of the consumers of green products are of the left and big fans of Al Gore and other assorted liberals/Democrats. They probably also are more likely to have endorsed tonight’s vote on healthcare “reform.”

New York Times, March 21, 2010:

Are consumers of “green” products more likely to be miserly and thieving? A series of psychological experiments at the University of Toronto — the results of which are scheduled for publication in an issue of the journal Psychological Science — seemed to suggest, at least in some contexts, just that.

In an initial experiment, 59 student volunteers were asked to assign attributes like cooperative, altruistic, and ethical to two different groups of consumers: those who purchase environmentally friendly products and those who buy more conventional goods. As expected, the consumers in the first group — those perceived to be making “green” choices in the market — were more likely to be assigned noble attributes than the nongreen shoppers.

But things got more interesting in the next two experiments.

…All participants were then asked to engage in a seemingly unrelated exercise that involved sharing money. The result? Those who had simply been exposed to the “green” store — that is, those who had merely rated the products — shared the most money.

Those who had purchased products at the green store were easily the least generous.

[T]hose participants who perceived themselves as having already done their bit for the world by purchasing green products felt no particular obligation to be benevolent afterward.

Things got even worse in the final exercise, in which 90 students initially shopped in either the green store or the conventional store, as before.

…In the end, despite having been told that the results [of their responding to an easy-to-answer question] might be used to develop future studies and therefore accuracy was vital, the volunteers who had shopped at the green store were significantly more likely to have answered incorrectly. This suggested that a greater number of the green shoppers were simply plucking randomly at the keys to get more money rather than trying to be accurate.

When given the opportunity to pay themselves from cash-filled envelopes that participants had been given at the outset, the green shoppers were also more likely to pluck out a little more money than the tallies on their screens entitled them to.

  8. At what point to Democrat governors begin to realize that ObamaCare forces them to cough up more state funding for the estimated 16 million citizens who will be added to Medicaid rolls?
Comment by JVW – 10:02 pm

Yep. In fact, Diane Feinstein was an early No based exactly on that reasoning. She said the Medicaid burden would be too great, especially with California’s budget problems.

But what do we get? Dems bribed, rolled, hustled, mugged or threatened. I really hope Tom Coburn does watch these critters like a hawk. Any departing in Nov. should not slide into a cushy lobbying job or BOD position.

For all the gloating about this supposed victory, remember that old media can’t rewrite history. Really think about the deceit and maneuvers which were critical in getting this scam across the finish line. Kickbacks galore. The supreme orator couldn’t even unite his own party without monster payoffs, bribes, fake media spin, bogus letters from Ellie Light, threats, Moveon campaign retaliation and Oval Office threats. But thank God for the blogs, talk radio and Fox, or this tale of sleaze and corruption would’ve been lost to the ages.

Unlike Barack Obama, the truth is here to stay.

  9. Feinstein’ s a Senator obviously, who considered a gubernatorial run.
And Boxer’s gotta go; would like DF OUT too.

I wuoldn’t be surprised if Obie and his minions end up witnessing a different kind of change toward the end of this year…

  11. The good citizens of the United States of America already have a memorable if not amusing impression of how Republican governor Rick Perry of Texas feels about ‘American soil.’ The ‘Lone Star State’ governor talked of secession from the Union at an Austin Tea Party rally last April and generated a lot of laughs. Some with him. Many at him. But then, as Tip O’Neill quipped, all politics is local. – source HufPo, 4/15/09, http://www.thedailybeast.com/cheat-sheet/item/tx-governor-talks-secession/tea-parties/

  12. Rick Perry, of course, did not advocate seceding from the USA.

That’s why trolls have to say he talked ‘about’ it, vaguely. He was explaining the virtue of the federalist system and the 10th amendment. He actually loves the USA’s system of government, despite his many flaws. His government spends less money than it takes in, so democrats really need to shut the fuck up if they are laughing at him. They couldn’t do as good a job as Rick Perry’s government does if their lives depended on it. And if health care ever gets to single payer, it will.

  13. Virginia already responded to ObamaCare. From a March 10 WaPo article:

RICHMOND, Va. — Virginia’s General Assembly became the first in the nation Wednesday to approve legislation that bucks any attempt by President Barack Obama and Congress to implement a national health care overhaul in individual states.

The Republican-ruled House of Delegates, with wide Democratic support, voted 80-17 without debate for the largely symbolic step aimed at the Democratic-backed reforms pushed by Obama and stalled in Congress. The vote sends the measure to Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell who intends to sign it.

Thirty-four other state legislatures have either filed or proposed similar measures – statutes or constitutional amendments – rejecting health insurance mandates, according to the American Legislative Exchange Council.

    (snip)

More distressing for Virginia Democrats was that 21 of their 39 delegates in the 100-member House sided with the GOP in defying the initiative that is their party’s national priority.

    (emphasis mine)

Virginia was the first state to actually officially stand up and be counted. And even a majority of the state Democrats stood up to be counted against the fed Democrats. It’s time for those other 34 states to stand up and be counted as well.

  14. If I were Perry, I’d be a bit peeved at the feds too. His state drastically outperforms most other states in income generation and job growth consistently.

  15. I can’t find a response from Michigan governor Jennifer Granholm, so I’ll helpfully provide what she’s most likely to say.

“In these perilous times, so close to when I am term limited out of office, it is essential that our federal government address the unemployment situation in our great state by creating thousands up high paying federal jobs. This health care bill will provide a soft landing place for many persecuted Americans who are about to lose their jobs, perhaps even as soon as next November.”
