L.A. Times Ad Designed to Look Like News . . . Is That Really So Novel?

Via Winds of Change, Marc Danziger comments on an ad designed to look like a full-page ad for a movie on the front page of the L.A. Times:

The LA Times ran an ad that wrapped the front page for the film Alice In Wonderland; that was controversial, but what made it deeply controversial is that the ad was designed with copy and font to look like the Times’ front page…with an ad layered on top of it.

Less deeply controversial in the newsroom: actual front-page advertisements for Barack Obama.

  1. The “news” in the background was filler and it was a separate sheet, so it’s not like they covered up the news with Hollywood BS.

    Oh, wait…

  2. Ahhh, an old ‘trick of the trades’ used often by some LAT management-types in past guises. Perfect– and cheesy– for Hollywood’s ‘hometown’ paper. Inexpensive to create, eye-catching, memorable enough to generate after-run buzz and profitable for the paper. And make no mistake- ad sales generates the revenue, to the endless annoyance of editors and newsroom staff. Always good to see effective advertising punch through the clutter. Everything the client could want from a scrap of Tinsletown ballyhoo.

  4. Considering that “Alice” wiped the floor with Matt Damon’s “Green Zone” this past weekend, and the box office numbers from that versus Depp’s movie was part of the embarrassing story on Damon’s failure, I suppose this counts as the most anti-liberal thing on the front page of the Los Angles Times in a long while.

  5. mmm, don’t get it. what does adding the headlines offer, except controversy. which, um, we are feeding.

I mean a better approach might be sort of like they did on the back of the box for “The Dark Knight,” where on the outer sleeve, it looks like your typical blue ray disk, but if you slide up the sleeve the back is all “jokerfied.” So maybe have the articles mad hatterified, so it creeps up on you.

Btw, its also interesting that johnny depp acting weird is apparently a positive draw these days. You have to appreciate the way Depp decided to go waaaay off the beaten path in his career and is reaping the dividends for it.

  6. They have been giving free advertising to the Democrats for decades.

  7. If it’s any consolation, the print edition of the Los Angeles Times is also in 3D.

  8. “3D”

    What “Dumb, dumber and dumbest”?

    Or “Democrat, Democrat and Democrat”?

    Oh, wait…
