Monica Conyers Sentenced to Prison

[Guest post by DRJ]

Monica Conyers, a former Detroit councilmember and the wife of
Democratic Rep. John Conyers, has been sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to bribery:

“Former Detroit City Councilwoman Monica Conyers has been sentenced to 37 months in prison with two years supervised probation and no fine.

The 37 months is the top of the sentencing guidelines recommended by the probation department.”

Before sentencing, Conyers claimed innocence and tried to withdraw her guilty plea — arguing the plea resulted from “badgering” to which a doctor said she was susceptible — but the Judge found she entered the plea knowingly and voluntarily and proceeded with sentencing. Breitbart reports Conyers plans to appeal.

  1. So, what could Obama possibly offer Congressman Conyers in exchange for his vote for healthcare reform?

  2. Ropelight, Obama doesn’t have to offer Conyers anything. Conyers is already bought and paid for.

  3. I’ve met this lady. She was simply strange. Her husband is promoted by democrats as the most qualified democrat in the House to consider the judicial oversight and judicial implications of laws. He’s so much crazier than Monica is that I can’t see his chairmanship as anything but an insult to all the other (D) House members.

I’m glad justice prevailed. They’ll appeal, and they will lose. Monica belongs in prison, and can give valuable testimony about her experience if the democrats ever take back the house after November’s bloodbath. Conyers would probably be the Chairman again.

  4. John, there’s a problem dealing with crooks, once bought and paid for, they don’t always stay bought. Just when you need them the most, that’s when they have the least incentive to live up to their end of the bargain.

It’s a golden opportunity to renegotiate the contract, don’t ya know, I’m not talking about changing sides, I’m talking about adding a little something extra to the deal to compensate Conyers, et al, for the inconvenience of having to face the voters. Fair is fair, after all.

So, every cohesive group in Congress is now looking at a very needy and increasingly desperate President, one who has no choice but to roll over and make a deal, any deal, to get his healthcare reform approved.

Obama is like Don Vito Corleone on his daughter’s wedding day: he can’t deny a request. Every caucus in Congress can offer Obama a deal he can’t refuse.

  5. They have certainly done a beautiful job with Detroit. Chicago will be next when the last Daley retires to Florida or Grand Beach. Zimbabwe, here we come !

  6. She then repeated: “I’m just not going to jail for something I did not do.”

    You got that right.

  7. For Detroit:

What shall we do with our fair city
Dirty and dangerous, smelly and shitty?
What shall we do with our fair town?
Grab a hammer and SMASH IT DOWN!

  9. There’s more to this story than just Monica Conyers.

Last year (Mar. 19, 2009) her husband John Conyers, Chairman of the House Juduciary Committee asked that ACORN be investigated for its questionable voter activities. This was at the time Federal Prosecutors were attempting to get Monica to accept a plea or face trial in the Synagro bribery scandal.

Now when have you heard of a senior black Democrat Congressman push for an investigation of ACORN? It smelled of a pressure tactic against the Obama administration and Eric Holder in particualar for special treatment for his wife.

In May John Conyers backed off, saying he had thought better of it. Shortly after Monica accepted a plea (which she now plans to disavow).

    This corruption reaches to Washington.

  10. Monica has a big mouf. She gets in bar fights. Still, she must have pissed the wrong people off. This kind of sentence would not have happened in Chicago, if you know what I mean.

  15. I remember from back in her Detroit City Council days that she could get a bit shrill.
But it was also clear right away that she was every bit as smart as Maxine Waters

  16. Well, that leaves only 3,000 to 4,000 more Democrats in Michigan that deserve to be in jail or run out of office.

Kwame Kilpatrick and now Conyers is a nice start though.

  17. That youtube classic “Monica Conyers debates schoolchildren” (and loses FYI) is comedy gold

  18. Lots of people have probably put this up.

  19. After watching a video where Mrs. Conyers was out-debated/classed by some middle school students, this is certainly no shock.

    GeneralMalaise (01c700)

  20. And that school children video gets a central point across. These crooked councilpersons and twisted local politicians in Chicago, Detroit, etc… they are not fighting the “White, male, Eurocentric patriarchy”. they are fighting a lot of poor minorities.

The argument may have been about decorum, but when you look at the demonization of employers, the ban on school vouchers, the focus on unemployment cheese for 99 weeks… it’s easy to see why places with one party democrat rule are terrible places, particularly for the poor.

    Dustin (b54cdc)

  21. Indeed, Dustin. Look at what the Democrats in Congress and the Obami are doing to the DC School voucher program. Consigning poor, minority children to a putrid education in the pathetic public school system.

  22. Glad someone mentioned the “debating eighth-graders” thing. Youtube had numerous examples of Ms. Conyers’ antics at public meetings.

I should drive by the office and honk this afternoon =)
