Brooklyn D.A. Confirms O’Keefe Posed As Pimp; Friedman Lies Yet Again?

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:31 am

Dave Surls reminds me of something I noticed when I read the Brooklyn D.A.’s statement finding no state law criminality by ACORN in New York:

The three had been secretly videotaped by two people posing as a pimp and prostitute, who came to ACORN’S Brooklyn office, seeking advice about how to purchase a house with money generated by their ‘business.’

Wow. They viewed the unedited video and said that O’Keefe posed as a pimp?

Boehlert’s and Friedman’s heads must be spinning.

Speaking of Friedman, he has repeatedly said that a Congressional Research Service report (which was released by that bastion of even-handedness, John Conyers) found no criminal wrongdoing by ACORN with respect to their actions on the O’Keefe/Giles videos. For example, Friedman states:

[T]hree investigations (one from the Congressional Research Service, one from MA’s former Attorney General, and the latest, just this week from the Brooklyn, NY District Attorney) have all found no criminal wrongdoing by the low-level ACORN employees caught on secret video . . .

I’m having trouble finding this exculpation in the report. Admittedly, I have only scanned it and have not yet read every word, so maybe I missed it. Can someone help me out?

Surely Friedman isn’t lying again . . .

UPDATE: I added the words “state law” to the post. The D.A. made no determination regarding possible federal crimes. Thanks to PCD.

  1. If the report does not report actual criminal wrongdoing, then I suppose one could say that the report found no criminal wrongdoing.

The report also found no smoking health hazards.

  2. It also found no evidence that ACORN serves food contaminated with e Coli. Of course, it wasn’t tasked with that job. (Nor, as best as I can tell, was it tasked with finding whether the O’Keefe tapes were evidence of criminal behavior by ACORN. But maybe someone can prove me wrong.)

  4. The CRS report is not an “investigation”. It is a report of news clippings and searches of databases. The completeness of which can’t be verified in any way.

  5. Pat,

You probably haven’t looked at this article, but could the former Federal Attorney be right that the Brooklyn DA did not prosecute bacause what he saw were FEDERAL crimes, and that the DOJ ought to prosecuting?

  6. It’s pretty clear from the transcripts that O’Keefe represented to the ACORN workers that he was the girl’s boyfriend, and that the pimp was a third person who was not present.

AND….That he wanted to set up a brothel for under-aged girls to fund his future political career. Don’t forget that part. See, that’s the part that makes him a PIMP.

NOT, his relationship with the girl. But, since she was to also turn tricks in the house to make him money, then yeah, he was her pimp too.

  8. T (why such a short moniker), you need to re-read the transcript, because it is clear you are improperly parsing and intentionally omitting information. That is, by definition, a lie of omission. But since you’re a drive-by troll, I’m sure you won’t read anything that flays your lie.

  10. “The report also found no smoking health hazards.”

I also noted that both the CRS report as well as the Harshbarger report gave ACORN a clean bill of health with respect to possible asbestos contamination or exposure in their workplaces. Neither the CRS nor Harshberger were tasked to look for the asbestos exposure, but nevertheless, it’s good to note they did not report any.

Wait. You’re saying that there’s no obligation, if you are aware of someone having an intention to commit pedophilia and/or trafficking in child prostitution (pick any of a number of potential offenses out of that hairball), that, IF you are aware someone intends to do this, and IF you have a reasonable expectation that there is a serious chance it happens, that you DON’T have a legal obligation to inform the authorities of such intent?

Pretty lenient state laws, it sounds like.

    Improbably so, in fact.

For some strange reason, he and his team of expert investigators never bothered to look at the unedited tapes that can be found at several sites on the internet or obtained by supeona from O’Keefe.

Unless you want to believe that everyone in Hymes’s office flunked Investigating 101, this “report” smells like a “cover-up.”

    JD (3ee991)

  27. (@6 T) It’s pretty clear from the transcripts that O’Keefe represented to the ACORN workers that he was the girl’s boyfriend, and that the pimp was a third person who was not present.

It’s pretty clear that O’Keefe caught an organization that was willing to assist in the creation of a child prostitution ring.

When “T” (and those like him) ignores this fact, they provide shielding to those that prey on children. Not sure why “T” does this, but maybe he has sacrificed his moral principles for the sake of a political ideology and party — both of which increasingly feel the need to ally and defend such entities as ACORN. If so, this should serve an intelligent and logical person as a Red Flag that his party, and the ideology that it currently espouses, may be flawed. To a certain extent, this is starting to happen; politically ACORN is already toxic.

The residual people who still feel the need to shield an organization that attempted to help create a child prostitution ring, well, they are lost (either as perverts or intellectually).

The expression “bottom of the barrel” most suitably applies.

    Pons Asinorum (95faa4)

  28. The report does mention a bunch of ACORN employees pleading (or found?) guilty of various frauds.

If a private business had employees soliciting pimps, committing voter registration frauds, and illegally breaking into foreclosed homes as a gesture of protest, most Americans would sour on that company pretty quick. Even if the company on the whole isn’t systematically criminal.

No one cares about ACORN, most (non black) minorities have never even heard of the organization. There are actually non native English speakers who needs assistance with filling out forms and job seach, but there really isn’t an ACORN equavalent there to help them.

    lee (cae7a3)

  29. If you watch the videos, it’s clear that ACORN’s a criminal enterprise. There’s no way around it. Sophists can play games around the truth, but most folks want ACORN to stay away from their communities. It’s the Klan 2.0, doing whatever it takes to win elections for democrats and wage war against the GOP. They know this, we know this, and Boehlert et al are simply accepting their role as part of the problem.

    Dustin (b54cdc)

  30. The statement, “If you tell a lie enough times people will believe you” has a corollary.

People who tell lies will repeat them over and over until you believe them. People who tell the truth tend to say it once and expect people will remember it is the truth.

People who tell the truth need to realize this and not make assumptions that “setting the record straight” once will be enough.

    MD in Philly (70a1ba)

  31. It’s not a criminal enterprise, and the tapes prove nothing, nothing, I tell you!

    Comment by Sergeant Schultz

    Dmac (799abd)

  32. I think a significant number of liberal commenters are simply wanting to be part of the Klan 2.0 movement of waging war on the GOP and helping democrats thug their way into office ACORN-style. I had a bit of an epiphany with the way Sadly No! happily lied and boasted about lying to harm Alkon’s livelihood on Amazon. The Klan was simply the democrat party in the south for a while, and a lot of dummies didn’t know better than to just yuck it up and try to be part of the pack.

Thank God, violence against Tea Partiers is very limited (not gone, but limited), and the losers who spend their time trying to spin ACORN news and destroy perceived GOP honest brokers is limited to comment trolling and silliness like that Glenn Beck Rapes Kids website.

We’re seeing history, and I’m glad we’ve made progress. Any way you slice it, ACORN is a much better democrat thug operation than the KKK was. I wouldn’t want to live anywhere near an ACORN office, but at least they won’t kill me like the democrats killed thousands of republicans back in the Al Gore sr. ‘good old days’.

    Dustin (b54cdc)

  33. “I’m having trouble finding this exculpation in the report.”

Well, whether or not ACORN workers broke any laws in the videos was NOT one of the things the CRS was asked to research, so that’s probably why you didn’t see that in the report.

The CRS was asked to look at six issues. They’re listed right at the start of the report on pages one and two.

Sort of like I might use the word “weather”.
    (fair? hurricane?)

I assume that they have a standard for what constitutes “criminality” within their office that was not met here… the word criminality as used seems to mean “if we can’t convict based on the evidence we’ve been given… it isn’t criminality”

Otherwise they turned a deaf ear and a blind eye to the tapes…. because clearly criminal activities were discussed and the underage girls were in the process of importation

What makes you think there will be a new one? They haven’t budged from the old ones.

However, here’s a suggestion: Since O’Keefe didn’t try to solicit business between the male ACORN members shown in the video and “his” girl then obviously he wasn’t “posing” as a pimp. Only if actually seen pandering could he be considered a pimp.

    How’s that work for ya?
