Blogger Mickey Kaus Plans to Challenge Boxer

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 11:10 pm

The L.A. Weekly has reported:

Pioneering political blogger Mickey Kaus took out papers to run for U.S. Senate in California, he told LA Weekly. The Venice resident said he’ll run this year against Barbara Boxer for her seat. He said he took out papers at the Los Angeles County Registrar of Voters.

The Democrat has been centrist and even conservative on some of the issues on which Boxer has taken a more left-leaning stand, including immigration: He does not favor amnesty and favors a more restrictive national policy.

The journalist’s Wiki entry says he’s also “skeptical of affirmative action, labor unions (particularly automotive workers’ unions and teachers’ unions), and gerrymandering of congressional districts.”

Not a bad set of positions for a Democrat, huh?

I got his slogan already written:

“Mickey Kaus: Better Than Boxer!”

No charge, Mickey!

I don’t know if Mickey can win, but I’d vote for him. I’d register as a Democrat to do it, if I had too. (I don’t know whether Democrats plan to close their primary to outside parties or not.) He would be the first Democrat I voted for in years.

P.S. I’m planning to go to his signature-gathering party . . . even though my signature does him no good.

  1. register as a Dem tomorrow, and keep a copy, mailing the form off to the registrar.

take the copy to the party and sign in good faith, then re-register as your usual “Peace and Freedom” party member 5 or 6 weeks before the election.

    voila!

  2. I would actually vote for him, too, especially if Fiorina ends up being the R nominee.

  5. i’d vote for him on what little i know over the two RINO’s, if they are the choice, simply to keep a RINO out of office. better the devil who does you a favor occasionally than the so called friend that screws you like McLame.

    wtr, are you SoCal local?

  8. Mickey! ‘Kaus he’s better than Boxer!

Sure, he’d have to temporarily change the pronunciation of his name, but politicians have made much more fraudulent temporary changes.

  9. I think we’re seeing the second Boxer Rebellion.

  10. I’d move from Iowa to California to vote for him (and the better climate), but I and my business can’t afford the taxes there!

  11. I’d vote for Charles Manson before I’d vote for Boxer.

  14. I’d move back to California from Iowa to register and vote for Mickey if part of his platform was putting leftwing nutburgers like imd-dumbass and timb into rubber rooms.

  15. Mickey Kaus is one Dem I’d be proud to vote for.

  16. Mickey is an honest liberal with common sense and a sense of humor… qualities that are in short supply on the left.

  17. Unless the law has changed since I ran for the Assembly in the 90’s, your signature helps him get past an initial threshold, valid or invalid. He then gets time to either gather replacement signatures for the invalid ones, or pay a fee.

  18. He’s got my vote. But then San Fernando Red or My Pet Goat would have my vote in a contest with Baghdad Barbara “Call Me Senator” Boxer.

Now if Babs would just let me call her “Ex Senator Boxer”, I’d be glad to do that. She’s been an ongoing embarassment to the state.

  20. Kaus changed my life with his link to the housing bubble blog 3 years ago..I realized quickly that the economy was going in the crapper and managed to shield my savings from the stock crash that came soon afterward. All from a link of his. He has this postulate that anecdotal evidence can tell you a lot more of what’s going on in real time than academics and their “peer-reviewed charts” which are always retrospective. I never forgot it.

Wish I was still in Cali and could sign the petition.

  21. You guys in Cali should do an “Operation Chaos” in the Democratic primary and get Mickey the nomination. Then in the general, we can’t lose!

  22. Can’t remember when, or if, I’ve voted for a Dem; but for Mickey, I just might change registrations – at least for the Primary.

  23. I believe Dems allow Dems and decline to states to vote in their primary.

I will likely vote for Mr. Kaus.

I can’t; I applied for a position on the redistricting commission and changing parties would instantly disqualify me.

  25. What are his positions on Obamacare, the “stimulus” and other big government staples of his party? Also trying terrorists in civilian courts, closing GITMO etc?

  26. Pioneering political blogger Mickey Kaus drank a Redbull and plans to grow wings and fly in California, he told LA Weekly. The Venice resident said he’s planning on a solo trip to the moon later this year, as soon as the feathers are fully fledged.

Oh and it’s not Boxer’s seat. It’s the people’s seat!

Really, more of a highchair when Boxer is sitting on it.

    So Boxer is better??

    We’re talking primary, bub.

  28. Make no mistake, Kaus is a liberal, but he’s an honest man and is the least partisan Democrat I’ve come across this side of Zell Miller.

Recommended reading: His exposé of the sewing circle/cabal of lil’ Ezra Klein and other far-left bloggers and their weekly conference calls to get their group marching orders/talking points together.

Downside for me, personally… he has a hard-on for Fiat cars.

No! She’s old enough for a booster seat.

  31. he has a hard-on for Fiat cars.

I had a friend who had a late 60’s Spider back in High School, circa 1978. Awesome road car, but like all Fiats, terrible mechanics.

    Dmac (799abd)

  32. Have to disagree with you about Fiats, Dmac. First new car I ever purchased was a 1974 X1/9… still my favorite car… and I’ve owned a bunch. Reliable as could be. I put nearly 100K miles on it in the 6 years I owned it and only sold it because we had our first child on the way. Replaced the brakes once, the tires twice and , except for normal maintenance, only expense incurred.

Many people who bought Italian cars back then expected to treat them like a Ford Pinto, i.e., ignore maintenance schedule and that wasn’t a good idea.

I now own a cherry ’81 X (and have a ’76 in the garage just sitting there, appreciating in value) that has 182K miles and that has about as souped up a street engine as you’d want and split my work commute to Sacramento between the ’81 and an ’07 350Z… a great car, but not nearly the same grins per mile.

Ya just gotta get ’em sorted out and treat them like the special piece of automotive machinery they are.

    GeneralMalaise (2e0f70)

  33. So Boxer is better?

Of course Kaus is better than Boxer. But there’s also the question of which Democrat will be weaker in the general election. In Connecticut, the incumbent Senator Chris Dodd was trailing each of three potential opponents badly (including a professional wrestling executive). After Dodd dropped out, Connecticut’s Democratic Attorney General, Richard Blumenthal, now leads the same three Republican candidates comfortably, in one-on-one matchups.

But it will be good to see Kaus soften Boxer up for the knockout punch later.

  34. If one was able to combine the intellectual capability of Fortney “Pete” Stark with that of Babs Boxer into one politician, one would still have a politician who is dumber than a bag o’ hammers.

Unfortunately, that’s often good enough to be elected by Angelenos and People’s Republic of the Greater Bay Area voters.

    GeneralMalaise (2e0f70)

  35. General,

I beg to differ. I mention a name that fits your description, but failed in his bid for statewide office,

I am intent on maintaining my current party status, and hoping that my Republican friends do the right thing and nominate Chuck Devore during the primary. meanwhile, I feared the best option I had was to simply skip the Boxer box on my ballot in June.
