Senator Lautenberg Injured in Fall (Updated)
[Guest post by DRJ]
The Bergen Record reports Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) was hospitalized following a fall:
“U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg was taken by ambulance from his Cliffside Park condo Monday night after suffering a fall, a spokesman said.
The spokesman, Caley Gray, said Lautenberg was conscious when he was taken to an area hospital. He said he did not know if the 86-year-old senator fell in the apartment, or if he suffered any serious injuries.
Gray initially said Lautenberg was taken to the hospital as a precaution, and no further details were immediately available.”
It’s not clear if Lautenberg was released or is still being evaluated.

UPDATE 2/16/2010: Senator Lautenberg has a bleeding ulcer that caused him to become lightheaded and fall. He has received treatment and is expected to recover soon.
Unfortunately the Senator is in a age group where hip fractures are prevalent, although I believe that they affect women more than men.
I would hope that isn’t the matter in his case.
EW1(SG) (edc268) — 2/15/2010 @ 8:49 pmI hope it’s not anything serious, too. It’s too hard to heal at that age.
DRJ (6a8003) — 2/15/2010 @ 9:17 pmMaybe we’ll be lucky and Christie will be able to name a senator to replace lautenberg. 58-42. Gets sweeter all the time.
Jim (582155) — 2/15/2010 @ 9:22 pmLautenberg is the guy they replaced Torcelli with on the ballot at the eleventh hour, right? I had no idea he was 86.
It would be interesting to compare the proportion of octogenarians in the U.S. Senate to their proportion among U.S. citizens age 30 and up. I may look in to that later tonight.
JVW (9759d4) — 2/15/2010 @ 9:22 pmthe fracture incidence is due primarily to osteoporosis, which, as memory serves, is more prevalent in women for hormone reasons, but yeah, the older you get, the easier it is for things to get damaged, the harder it is to heal, and the more likely you are to have complications and bad outcomes….
as the lady said: “Old age is no place for sissies.”
regardless of his politics, my best to him and his family. there but for the grace of God, etc…

HeavenSent (c3c032) — 2/15/2010 @ 9:40 pmAt that age hip fractures can indeed be dangerous. My grandfather died at age 87 due to complications resulting from a hip fracture. Although we may not agree politically, I do hope the Senator pulls through ok
Your Name Here (f513cb) — 2/15/2010 @ 10:33 pmThe five oldest Senators, all 80 or above, are all Democrats. Byrd, Akaka, Inouye, Lautenberg and Specter. Bitter clingers on to power all.

wt (b70bfd) — 2/16/2010 @ 3:08 amHope he’s okay. Fell on the basement stairs over Thanksgiving weekend and my back freakin hurt for 4 weeks.
JEA (0ccd61) — 2/16/2010 @ 5:28 amI certainly don’t wish the senator ill and, in hopes of a complete recovery, he really should refrain from stress. Stay away from DC for a few months, Senator, so you can feel better and recover well. It’s been said that Gd watches over small children, drunks, and the United States.
