Liveblogging Bruckner’s 8th Symphony
It’s Lorin Maazel conducting the L.A. Philharmonic.
Technically, I can’t really live-blog it. I mean, it’s all one performance. All I can do is say: woo-hoo! I’m here!
And maybe add a surreptitiously taken iPhone photo later.
UPDATE: I can neither confirm nor deny having taken this picture:
I love the way you can get right on top of the orchestra at Disney Hall.
ah yes…. life among the cultural elite.

redc1c4 (fb8750) — 1/21/2010 @ 8:25 pmHe’s most popular in Vienna. Bruckner tends to plod along like a Wagner but with less excitement. But you can develop a taste for him. One interesting fact was that he would rewrite parts of his symphonies if his friends were too critical.
Alta Bob (e8af2b) — 1/21/2010 @ 8:29 pmAs your attorney — well, not your attorney, but an attorney who went to the same law school you did — I advise you to stop incriminating yourself on your blog.
Beldar (da5bc1) — 1/21/2010 @ 8:38 pmBruckner is wonderful. If you ever get a chance to hear Herbert Blomstedt(sp?) conduct him be sure to go.
Charlie Davis (0157fe) — 1/21/2010 @ 9:24 pmThe LA Phil is a great orchestra and the Disney Hall is a wonderful venue. Once we subscribed, I never looked back.
Enjoy! (But no pictures, it’s against the rules.)
Clavius (b00448) — 1/21/2010 @ 9:39 pmBeldar,
Incriminating myself by talking about taking a picture when I’m not a ‘sposed ta?
Or by admitting I like Bruckner?
Patterico (c218bd) — 1/21/2010 @ 11:08 pmBruckner has always been a hero of mine. Especially since he allowed Mookie Wilson’s grounder through his legs int he 1986 World Series.
Dr. K (eca563) — 1/22/2010 @ 5:40 amSorry, can’t relate
Dencouch (935f74) — 1/22/2010 @ 6:05 amAah man, I am so envious. Bruckner’s 8th is fantastic. Saw Zubin Mehta conduct it several years ago with LA Phil at the Disney. Nothing could top that!
Lee Merrick (a1b776) — 1/22/2010 @ 7:54 amWould love to go hear the performance on Sunday, BUT I really want to watch football – oh the agony!
Whoa! You were *behind* the stage? You weren’t exaggerating when you said “on top of the orchestra.”
Here in Ann Arbor we hope for the free seats that you can get if you wait until just before the performance begins. They give away the few unsold seats. Sometimes you need to take Dramamine – and sometimes you need an oxygen tank for the thinner air, but once in awhile you can get some amazing seats for free!
Gesundheit (cfa313) — 1/22/2010 @ 8:25 amThere are seats all the way around the Orchestra in Disney Hall. Behind, on the sides, in addition to the traditional front. It is great watching the musicians closely and seeing the face of the conductor.
