Patterico's Pontifications

Any Fans of Parthenon Huxley (aka P. Hux) in L.A.? (UPDATE: Plus Wasted Tape News!)

Filed under: Music — Patterico @ 11:33 pm

If so, there’s a pretty special event coming up later this month: a living room concert. Mrs. P and I are the first two on the list. There are probably only 25-30 spots total. I have no idea how many spots are left (if any).

We went to a P. Hux living room show at this host’s house several years back, and he made an album out of the evening. We were there for history.

If you’re interested, send me an e-mail and I’ll put you in touch with the host.

UPDATE: Some Parthenon Huxley for you. Language warning:

UPDATE: In addition, one of my favorite bands of the 1990s, Wasted Tape, is coming out with a new double album — and currently has available for free download their amazing first album. I heartily recommend it to anyone with musical taste. A combination of Beatles and Rush — my two favorite bands — and I’ve never heard another band even try to pull off that combo.

They’re also newly on Facebook. I’m one of their oldest fans, and their newest Facebook fan.

Go download that album now. I seriously love this band.

UPDATE x2: You don’t even have to download it. You can just click the link and stream it to see what you think.

  1. Thanks for the download link. Shame I’m not in the area.

Beatles and Rush. Sounds worth a listen to.

  2. They quit making music in the mid-80s. Most music died in the mid-70s. And Rush Limbaugh should quit singing.

  3. To be honest, my old lady has Beatles Rock Band. My mom gave it to her for the holidays. I, like most, went through a phase where I loved the beatles. I still like them quite a bit.

but I’ve reentered the ‘too much of that right now’ phase. Those dudes made a hell of a lot of music.

  4. Re: ^^^ Sorry, NO. In fact, the point is that they never quit. Progressive rock is the best possible use of the word “progressive” that there could ever be.

  5. And as I catch up blogs I missed today, I see Aceofspades had a 300+ discussion of Lady Gaga. LOL.

  6. we listen to The Sound, 100.3FM, and “Boxing Day with the Beatles” was more than HRH was prepared to deal with, so it was back to KLOS for the day.

i like the Beatles, but not *that* much, and they never grew on her to begin with. but then again, she likes all sorts of weirdo music like opera and stuff, so her taste is suspect.

  7. So sorry. Previous comment is — respectfully — directed at Mr. Hitchcock.

  8. KJazz in LA is one of my favorite stations, so I’m pretty suspect myself. Even though I only get to Cali once in a while, that’s the station I listen to the most.

  9. Mamas and Papas had some sick politics but they made good music. Today, not so much. My brother used to listen to Dead Kennedys, Black Flagg, Suicidal Tendencies and other non-music. Ballads are music. The fuller and more clearly understood the better.

  10. **NOTICE: If language warnings are needed, it isn’t music.**

  11. Seeing as how the cute mama is 65 years old now, and the other three are up shit-Creeque Alley without a microphone, I’d say that “today, not so much” is really none-at-all.

  12. Mr. Hitchcock, I would, in most instances agree that, “If language warnings are needed, it isn’t music.” However, the language used in this song turns out to be a terribly profound statement on infidelity, “F**king really f**cking matters. . . ”

In the marriage service, sex is the only thing that is promised EXCLUSIVELY to the spouse. While we do promise that we will love and stand by each other — for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness, and in health — these promises aren’t exclusive, as we obviously love and care for others in these conditions as well (most especially children and parents).

    F**king really does f**king matter.

  13. Susan has a good way with words.

  14. The artist above reminds me a little of Loudon Wainright – or even his son, Rufus.

And while I agree that the majority of pop music is absolutely wretched these days, I recall similar sentiments during the mid to late 70’s, right when the Ramones and other punk bands rode in to save the day from Muzak – craptacular acts.
One thing that’s been sown by Clear Channel’s rapid consolidation and homogenization of local radio is internet services like Pandora, which is really a giant step forward to the next venue for discovering noteworthy artists that you’d never hear from your local radio outlets.

Nature abhors a vaccuum, and once this distribution channel becomes more established you’ll seen a huge explosion in quality and variety.

  15. my new ones for hearing are… they’re Australian… these ones and also these ones and these ones… I’ve never been to Australia. I think maybe I should fick that before my dollars are completely worthless.

  16. Surprising subject matter…my takeaway: don’t marry a politician. The odds aren’t in a wife’s favor. A lot of weak men seem to feed off the power that comes with the position. That’s a dangerous aphrodisiac for those of weak character.

F**king really does f**king matter, no matter how much our culture tries to cavalierly tell us otherwise. Thoughtful singer/writer. I had never heard of him until now.

  17. Try Shiny Toy Guns for some very cool alternative rock. Don’t Cry Out and Rainy Monday are two of their best.

    Old Coot (d2bd0f)

  18. Rush meets the Beatles? As Beavis once remarked to Butt-head, “I’m THERE, dude”

    Thanks for the heads-up.

  19. Have and love the P Hux “Deluxe” CD from back in the day, but I never really followed up much – last I’d heard, Mr. Huxley was doing the replacement Jeff Lynne thing in ELO. That was some time ago. I’ll definitely try to catch up.

Oddly enough, just a couple of evenings ago while noodling around on acoustic, “Playing Her Guitar” popped into my head, and I tried to play it. Hadn’t heard it in several years, but I still managed to remember most of it – a sure sign of Grade A ear candy.

  20. Brilliant. My husband and I host house concerts in Salt Lake City and it’s refreshing to hear of 1) a house concert in Los Angeles, and 2) a singer / songwriter that isn’t filled with Bush Derangement Syndrome and My God You Can’t Be Conservative Because Cons are a) Evil b) Stupid and you are c) Nice and d) Smart. Now, off to purchase P Hux music.

  21. Thanks for the link (Wasted Tape). Reminds me a little of a band a work friend of mine is in, 1000 Miles from Home, although they’ve got a harder-rock edge.
