Another Flight #253 Mystery (Updated)

Who is the mystery videographer of Northwest Flight #253?

Fascinating snippet from WTMJ 620 radio in Milwaukee (“Oconomowoc Family Survives Terrorist Attempt”):

“…They were sitting about 20 rows behind Abdulmutallab, in a center aisle with her husband and daughter a row ahead of her and their two new adopted children, a six-year-old girl and an eight-year-old boy.

Her daughter said that ahead of them was a man who videotaped the entire flight, including the attempted detonation.

“He sat up and videotaped the entire thing, very calmly,” said Patricia. “We do know that the FBI is looking for him intensely. Since then, we’ve heard nothing about it.”

Doug Ross wonders if it was al Qaeda trying to “learn from any failure by taping the entire incident.”

UPDATE: Was there a 3rd man, too?

  1. I updated the post regarding another possible al Qaeda member onboard Flight 253.

  2. DRJ, just felt like mentioning that am sure many of us regular lurkers/commenters are noticing how much posting you’re doing lately, and we appreciate it anytime your schedule allows. Hope your Christmas season’s goin’ well BTW.

  3. Thanks, NOYK. I’m unhappy about the topics in the news that I’m posting on, but I’m happy to help Patterico keep things going when he’s busy elsewhere.

    DRJ (84a0c3)

  4. And I’m having a great Christmas. I hope you are, too.

  5. The best suggestion I’ve seen today is to start a non-Islamic airline. Before boarding, you have to deface the Koran and eat a BLT. For Jews we could substitute a short arm inspection.

Now, is that a great idea or what ?

Of course, the planes might need to have decoy flares for the stingers.

    Mike K (2cf494)

  6. It’s clever, Mike K, but I’m not sure it would stop them. Weren’t there reports the 9/11 hijackers frequented bars and had lap dances? Reports say Nidal Hasan was also a guest at a local strip club.

    DRJ (84a0c3)

  7. I like Mike K’s idea. Or maybe start an airline that offers free entry to strip clubs with any ticket purchase. Then you would have a short list to ferret out the terrorist scumbags since these Muslims appear to like going to strip clubs before committing mass murder.

  8. ABC solves one “mystery” — here’s a photo of Abdulmutallab’s underwear.

  10. “Reports say Nidal Hasan was also a guest at a local strip club.”

DRJ – Please, those establishments are more properly referred to as Gentlemen’s Clubs, or so I’m reliably informed.

    daleyrocks (718861)

  11. Patterico: fortunately we saw that the report was a bit short.

    Eric Blair (c8876d)

  12. I’ll work on my terminology, daleyrocks.

    DRJ (84a0c3)

  13. As my daughter has so dutifully informed me, those strip clubs (daley, I won’t shrink to PC even for you, TYVM) are off limits to military personnel. UCMJ violation right there.

    John Hitchcock (3fd153)

  14. DRJ – I just thinking of some of the skanks what work in those places what don’t want to be called strippers is all, not that there is anything wrong with strippers or that all strippers are skanks or anything. You saw the ACORN videos. Performance artists is a nice description the ACORN ladies came up with.

    daleyrocks (718861)

  15. I don’t want haapyfeet to accuse us of all being haters again.

    daleyrocks (718861)

  16. Nidal Hasan, Vidal Sassoon, connection?

    John Hitchcock (3fd153)

  17. John @13 – That’s hard to believe. What part of the UCMJ to they cite for a ban? It sounds more like an unenforceable threat to me. For officers I might see a different argument.

    daleyrocks (718861)

  18. It’s not like I’m ever-vigilant just sometimes.

    happyfeet (71f55e)

  19. feets – stripper skanks are people too.

    daleyrocks (718861)

  20. indeed they are… hey have you ever seen The Riches?… awesome show plus also there’s a stripper

    happyfeet (71f55e)

  21. Heh. My sincere comment looks sarcastic coming right after the comment about the underwear.

It was a very sincere and non-snarky comment.

    Patterico (424a94)

  22. That looks like women’s underwear, actually. I wonder, are Jihadis frustrated transvestites?

    nk (df76d4)

  23. daleyrocks,

I was being sincere, not snarky. It probably is more of a Gentlemen’s Club than a strip joint but my strip-club-knowledge is very old school.

    Patterico,

I appreciate your confidence but it was funnier when I thought you were making a sly reference to my underwear comment.

    DRJ (84a0c3)

  24. Terrorist to be guy; “Hey guys, how about we use that strap on thingy, at least I can like drop it to the floor, not sure if Alla Ackbar would be the first sound I make if my balls are on fire”

“besides what will I take of my 72 virgins with if my balls and dick are like gone”? (“oh you are going to take care of my virgins for me?) I feel much better now.”

“Hey bomb maker dude, demonstrate these things for me will ya”?

    *****************

Too bad that fire got put out so soon actually.
Extinguisher guy should have monitored performance for a few minutes first. You know, just to make sure the guy really understands for many years what it’s like to empty bags of urine and thinking he like had a sex change!

    Comment by Patterico — 12/28/2009 @ 4:25 pm

We know you’re really busy lately, Patterico, but DRJ’s pretty awesome too, so her getting appreciation today is making my evening even better.

    no one you know (196ed7)

  26. DRJ – I was just being a smartass (smiles and ducks).

    daleyrocks (718861)

  27. “my strip-club-knowledge is very old school”

DRJ – Not going there. Nope, I’m not going there. Where’s JD when you need him?

    daleyrocks (718861)

  28. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them running an operation and observing it. Dmac and I both know of other dry runs. If you read this history of 9/11, you will learn there were other hijack teams that were thwarted by the grounding. I expect the jihadis will bring down an airliner or two and probably a shopping mall. Mall of America is in an area with lots of radicalized Somalis.

    Mike K (2cf494)

  29. Our intelligence services have been severely crippled by the MSM, the Dems and the constant attacks from some of our own citizenry. They should reap what they’ve sown, but instead innocents will die as a result of their fecklessness. I worry every day my wife goes to work, and now I’m almost petrified. Damn them all to hell.

  30. Comment by daleyrocks — 12/28/2009 @ 4:52 pm

If the unit commander has posted “Gentlemen’s Clubs” OFF-LIMITS, presence at one could be prosecuted as disobeying a lawful order.
Or, they could just use the following:

    “ART. 134. GENERAL ARTICLE
Though not specifically mentioned in this chapter, all disorders and neglects to the prejudice of good order and discipline in the armed forces, all conduct of a nature to bring discredit upon the armed forces, and crimes and offenses not capital, of which persons subject to this chapter may be guilty, shall be taken cognizance of by a general, special or summary court-martial, according to the nature and degree of the offense, and shall be punished at the discretion of that court.”

    AD - RtR/OS! (191d21)

  31. AD – Making it “Off Limits” is different than having it part of the UCMJ as John characterized it. I understand disobeying lawful orders assuming there is a reason for characterizing it as a lawful order and I’m sure a creative NCO or officer has one up his sleeve.

The General Order you cite appears to be a catch-all. Is it ever used to bust people for going to strip clubs? Any idea? Not trying to be difficult, just asking.

    Mackenzie Phillips (718861)

  32. They don’t let soldiers go to strip clubs and then bust them out for being gay?

    nk (df76d4)

  33. AD – daley in 31

    daleyrocks (718861)

  34. Daley, a violation of a lawful order is, by definition, a UCMJ violation. And you’re right, 134 is a catch-all. And, as far as I know, it is Ft Hood order to restrict all personnel from frequenting those places.

When I was at AIT at Camp LeJeune (Camp Geiger), the base order put several places out of bounds, specifically in a certain region of town. Didn’t put Court Street out of bounds. But the local “foot patrol” always had SP (Marine version of MP) in accompaniment. And they went into the strip clubs to make sure Marines were not being immoral in those clubs, which is another UCMJ violation (but required an act other than an observational one).

    John Hitchcock (3fd153)

  35. The fact that the video taken by the “mystery videographer” hasn’t yet appeared on Youtube or Liveleak would seem to indicate it wasn’t the usual instance of citizen journalism.

Or maybe he is still in negotiations with the networks…

    Eric (32f5db)

  36. I’m thinking Al Qaeda is learning it’s much more difficult to be idiots on airlines these days, what with regular Joes beating them up. Won’t stop them, they’ll just put a crew on board in a cluster so the chosen one can blow himself up along with them.

    John Hitchcock (3fd153)

  37. “Daley, a violation of a lawful order is, by definition, a UCMJ violation.”

John – I understand that, but it requires a)the issuance of direct order and b)it’s disobeyance to become a problem with respect to the UCMJ. I read your comment above to say going to a strip club was a violation of the UCMJ, not that a direct order had already been issued making them off limits, hence…..

“off limits to military personnel. UCMJ violation right there.”
