Climate Change Chaos

[Guest post by DRJ]

The Copenhagen climate change summit is reportedly disintegrating from protests outside and chaos inside:

“Police fired tear gas, brandished batons and detained more than 200 protesters who tried to push through the security cordon around the Bella Center, as negotiations inside bogged down, for the second time this week, over differences between China and the West over emissions, funding issues and transparency.

“People around the world [are] actually expecting something to be done from us,” red-faced Danish Prime Minister Lars Rasmussen lectured delegates from nearly 200 nations.

Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), the highest-ranking American yet to appear at the talks, urged attendees to put aside their differences and “make Friday our day of success.”

Minutes earlier — in a surprise move that captured growing uncertainty over conference — Denmark’s climate minister, Connie Hedegaard, stepped aside as president of the conference, handing the gavel to Rasmussen, as head of the host country.”

The article concludes with accounts of summit representatives decrying the organizers’ bullying tactics. As we all know, it’s hard to reach a consensus when everyone is calling each other names.

  1. As we all know, it’s hard to reach a consensus when everyone is calling each other names.

That’s so not true! Name-calling is the best way to find consensus. Isn’t that right, $redacted $redacted?!

  2. Maybe us “skeptics” were a bit too cynical as well. This state of affairs should have been foreseeable given the failure of “Cap-n-Tax” in the US Congress. We should have known that all of the West wasn’t really going to give the “developing” nations a “free lunch”; that’s solely the job of the US. With the “free lunch” off the table, they now must argue over “scraps.”

  4. If the climate junketeers had been really serious, they would have held the event as a teleconference over the internet. It would have saved tons of money, CO2, and protestor angst. Plus other interested folks could have tuned in to watch and/or participate.

  6. Hey no one wants to defend the fraud back home.

It’s all about the money, nothing to do with the planet.

  8. Given that the high temps this week in Copenhagen are about -2C going down to -5C, this isn’t exactly a trip to the beach (except possibly for polar bears).
About now, most are probably thinking that teleconferencing idea isn’t too bad.

  10. Once these people manage to get some of these measures in place in a really painful but personally lucrative way, they can point to the fact that we still have ice caps and winter as proof that they saved the world.

I can only imagine the 300 ft tall Al Gore statues. Not that pride is the real problem… the starvation, poverty, and stagnation are the problem.

but so much of what they want is stuff that can be justified by more valid arguments. We can eventually get rid of coal plants and reduce our fossil fuel use. we can stop polluting our environment. We can make tons of progress that makes the USA more prosperous, cleaner, and greener. Will this make Al Gore and GE as rich? Apparently not.

But if the democrats wanted to repose some of these solutions in a way that didn’t give them power over our industries, by helping produce a bunch of nuclear power, wind power (even in sight of Kennedys), domestic drilling and industrialization (which is greener than carrying oil from everywhere else), using cleaner coal in the interim, and many other ideas, they would get better results than cap and tax. They would get more credibility with the moderates. they would have a long term victory.

But no strippers and learjets in Copenhagen.

  12. I admit, I’m hopelessly naive. I have a very hard time understanding why Al Gore would play on our fears and betray the people he spent his life claiming to serve.

He’s got enough money to satisfy every desire he;ll ever have, aside from having the power to affect everyone. Why would he want more than he has? Wouldn’t any normal person, in his shoes, want an honest an open approach to environmentalism… to convince by argument and admit mistakes? Yeah, of course they would.

Is Al Gore (proxy for his movement) really the selfish dick he appears to be? He appeared to bein Florida, when a new President who could bridge a partisan divide, was made radioactive to the left in a quixotic pursuit of an illegal victory.

    Dustin (44f8cb)

  13. No idea about Al Gore. Although he is not a particularly intelligent man, he appears to be a true believer; in short, a perfect pawn.

  14. Is Al Gore (proxy for his movement) really the selfish dick he appears to be?

Need you ask?, Algore is also power-hungry.

“It’s an interesting twist of fate here in our own backyard that former Vice President Al Gore has taken on a new platform and is now a catalyst for world change,” said Marci Zaroff, an “eco-entrepeneur” who introduced Gore.

“So, in essence, he’s president of the people. He’s president of the planet. And the work that he’s doing is more important than any other work that could possibly be done.”

  16. Hey, Bradley, did DRJ go somewhere? I have been keeping low over this unpleasantness with Mr. Goldstein.

  17. No, I explained in my previous comment. This was a leftover name from a computer I am now at, that I haven’t used in months. DRJ wrote the post!

  18. That’s what I thought. But I didn’t want to miss anything.

  19. And I am very glad DRJ posted about Jokenhagen. According to a report on NPR’s Marketplace, the conference issued 3x as many passes as the conference center’s maximum capacity.

  21. Bradley, they relied on Briffa to cherry pick the correct number of passes from available tree core data.

  22. Neo – Isn’t dope legal in Copenhagen plus the sex workers are giving it away free to the conference attendees as a protest to the Mayor. Those aging smelly hippies don’t give a crap about the cold when they can get high and screw all week.

  29. Yes, let the cops club the whackos while the “serious” people do a little indoor environmental research.

  30. AD – Why let the cops have all the fun?

  31. Looks like Bradley-san has become a hardened skeptic as a result of the CRU kerfuffle and further research. I wonder how much more time until he climbs off that wall (it’s too wide to be a fence) and joins me on the AGW denier side of the wall.

But there’s the progress part of it: from believer to skeptic to hardened skeptic to … my little island. 😉

  32. “This is not a climate-change negotiation,” said Janos Pasztor, director of the U.N. secretary-general’s climate-change support team. “It’s about something much more fundamental. It’s about economic strength.” Countries, he added, “just have to slug it out.”

Frankly, this is now sounding more like a negotiation on setting a World Industrial Plan with climate change as a pretext. More or less locking in industrial output and market share globally (which would explain why big business was so interested in getting in on the ground floor of “Cap-nTax”). Given the the two largest up and coming industrial countries, China and India, are trying to opt out, it seems pointless if at least the underlying pretext has no validity. It seems that the lackeys at the UN thought they could sucker them in, but these folks are no fools.
I keep trying to imagine what happens as 2nd and 3rd world countries realize that they have been dupped or mislead or just plain negotiated badly. We are talking trade wars, the likes of which have not occurred in over a century, and that means quite possibly real wars as well. Using a phony pretext, like AGW, will only make this possible outcome even more likely.
