SC Lawmakers Vote not to Impeach Sanford

South Carolina lawmakers voted against impeaching Governor Mark Sanford for his Argentinian “travels and trysts” but recommended a formal rebuke:

“South Carolina lawmakers voted down a measure to impeach Gov. Mark Sanford on Wednesday, but recommended a formal rebuke that said his travels and trysts with an Argentine mistress brought the state “ridicule, dishonor, disgrace and shame.”

Most of the seven legislative panel members said the Republican should resign, though his affair, use of state planes and a 2008 taxpayer-funded trip to Argentina were not serious misconduct that merited removal from office.”

I’ve repeatedly said this is a matter for South Carolinians to decide. I don’t care if Sanford is impeached, resigns, or serves out his term. I just hope he isn’t re-elected, but these days you can never tell.

  1. Guess if they impeached Sanford then they would have to go after themselves…

  2. He’s term limited, so no worries about reelection.

  3. he sounds like prime material for Ear Leader’s cabinet….

  4. Well, he’s as good as edwards. Now if he would just rape somebody, he could be as popular as clinton.

  5. Good for them. I thought Sanford’s teenage crush was kind of innocent and cute. Totally goofy and embarassing for a grown man but still innocent and cute.

  6. It does seem that way from afar, but I doubt his wife and 4 sons see the cuteness.

  7. Lately my wife and I have been agreeing on only one thing, that marriage, especially with children, is not a good idea, so …. 😉

  8. It must be something in the water air CO2 because I haven’t been that great to live with recently, either.

  9. personally, i blame Bush.

it sure as hell can’t be *my* fault: California is a “no fault” state….. %-)

  10. He should pay for the expenses for the travel. Impeachment should be for high crimes, and I am glad that the state isn’t going through something as severe as an impeachment for this.

I kinda thought Clinton’s behavior in his affair, while serious, was not of the nature that justified impeachment. He lied under oath, and that’s a big deal, but putting this country through that, because Bill Clinton was a liar? Well, it’s a good thing it failed, because Al Gore turned out to be the more egregious fraud.

  11. Rangel is not in any trouble, so why should Sanford be? No more double standards.

  12. Ray Nagin’s reelection after contributing to thousands of deaths killed the last bit of faith I had in American voters.

  13. I live in SC and anyone who does live here knew he would never be impeached. Know why? Two words.

  14. lisa,

I don’t live in South Carolina so I need help understanding your comment. Andre Bauer is the SC Lt Gov so I assume you believe South Carolinians don’t want him to be Governor. Is that right or can you elaborate?

  15. Unless you denounce and condemn Gov Sanford, you affirm and condone these actions.
