House Subcommittee Approves College Football Playoffs

Are you ready for some Congressionally-mandated and supervised college football playoffs?

“A House subcommittee approved legislation Wednesday aimed at forcing college football to switch to a playoff system to determine a national champion, over the objections of some lawmakers who said Congress had more pressing matters on its plate.”

Experts say it’s unlikely this legislation will go any further, although both President Obama and Senator Orrin Hatch have expressed concerns about the BCS system.

  1. Sheesh, what fatuous stupidity. Sure is good we got all that “Change”…

  2. Utterly ridiculous. As a USC fan, and NO Saints fan so at least I have some good news this year, I have experienced my share of “split” titles. Even with that, I don’t favor a playoff system for College Football.

Why? It’s “College” football and the college should come first. With a 12 game season, the games already take up a decent amount of time for the students and a playoff system of any size would extend the season. It would also take revenue away from smaller schools and give disproportionate money to larger schools.

USC would have had 3-4 extra games a season, as would Texas, the past couple of years and received revenue from those games. Whereas other schools who have lucrative, but “meaningless” bowl games under the current system would have had 1 revenue generating game at maximum.

College Football may be where the pros of tomorrow are recruited from, but it is still an offshoot of an institution that has a primary purpose of education.

  3. I want playoffs in a bad way.

But what the f___ kind of government do I have that cares about this crap? We’re broke. These hearings cost money.

  4. I hope the NCAA tells them to go f*ck themselves.

  6. Christian, that’s a really good argument. I guess what you’re saying is that the need for student athletes to get back to the books is more important that my need to have a clear cut winner every year.

And you’re right and I’m wrong about this.

  7. We’re going to have a Playoffs Czar.

  8. Heh. I’m sure he’ll pick someone with ties to Chicago so will it be Mike Ditka or Dick Butkus? I’m guessing Butkus since Ditka is a Republican.

  9. While they are at it, I’ve got a few minor things they could fix:

    1. Don’t you hate it when hotdog buns come in sixes, but hot dogs come in eights? Fix that!

    2. Limit the number of blades in men’s razors to five. I’m tired of having to upgrade.

    3. Blu-ray disks have too many messages, previews, copy-protect segments and logos! Disney must show their castle logo sequence 11 times before the movie starts. Fix that.

I mean, as long as we’re ordering the NCAA around …

  10. Big deal. My U plays in Division I and they have playoffs..you still don’t know if any one team could beat another on a given day because of the way it’s structured.

And yeah, it goes on and on. We’re up to semifinals here this Saturday and right now it’s 7 degrees out. They’re hoping to get up to 20 for the playoff game.

  11. This news can only mean that Congress has solved the deficit problem, has put the country on a path to pay off the National Debt in our lifetime, has vanquished overseas threats to our way of life, and has driven evil from our midst and hearts.
    All Hail Nancy!

Is there a better indication that ALL INCUMBENTS should be removed from public office!

  12. You’re going to have to start with Texas Rep. Joe Barton because he’s a co-sponsor.

  13. I’d rather have politicians do this sort of thing rather than focus on anything that is actually dangerous. Anything that matters they are going to get wrong. So bring on the post office namings, ncaa meddling and just about anything else that isn’t backed by big ideas people.

  14. It seems I say this every so often, but I’m no big fan of Barton, although I agree with a fair amount of his politics.

But this is stupid and he, as a self-proclaimed and by-action conservative, should back off.

His sponsorship of the bill is an insult to conservatism.

Although, Soronel has a good point. The best thing Congress can do is while away the hours on this kind of inanity rather than anything of importance — such as health care or regulating our exhalations.

  15. Is Texas going to beat Alabama?

Would Alabama not have gotten through the playoffs anyway? I think Texas had a great chance of doing so. I would have liked to see TCU get a chance to play a highly ranked team, though. Why do they need a playoff for that? Is there a rule saying they can’t just have a postseason game?

  16. It’s too bad that following their swearing in, we couldn’t send them on a two-year, around the world boat trip.
Just our luck though, someone would forget to set the scuttling charges.

  17. mmm, this quote got me thinking.

    > “over the objections of some lawmakers who said Congress had more pressing matters on its plate.”

Okay that is an objection for some but… for me its not a bug, its a feature. maybe they can spend so much time arguing over that, that they have no time, to destroy the healthcare system or the economy with cap and tax.

That being said, for any person who is in earnest doing that, i have to say it is an appalling abuse of power. of course i do think playoffs would be a good thing, but its none of the government’s damn business.

If BCS calculated World War 2:

After determining the Big-12 championship game participants the BCS computers were put to work on other major contests and today the BCS declared Germany to be the winner of World War II.

“Germany put together an incredible number of victories beginning with the annexation of Austria and the Sudetenland and continuing on into conference play with defeats of Poland, France, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium and the Netherlands. Their only losses came against the US and Russia; however considering their entire body of work—including an incredibly tough Strength of Schedule—our computers deemed them worthy of the #1 ranking.”

Questioned about the #4 ranking of the United States the BCS commissioner stated “The US only had two major victories— Japan and Germany . The computer models, unlike humans, aren’t influenced by head-to-head contests—they consider each contest to be only a single, equally-weighted event.”

German Chancellor Adolph Hiter said “Yes, we lost to the US ; but we defeated #2 ranked France in only 6 weeks.” Herr Hitler has been criticized for seeking dramatic victories to earn ‘style points’ to enhance Germany ’s rankings. Hitler protested “Our contest with Poland was in doubt until the final day and the conditions in Norway were incredibly challenging and demanded the application of additional forces.”

The French ranking has also come under scrutiny. The BCS commented ” France had a single loss against Germany and following a preseason #1 ranking they only fell to #2.”

Japan was ranked #3 with victories including Manchuria, Borneo and the Philippines.
