Sports Open Thread

Not in the mood for politics or government? Let’s try a Sports post. Today’s news includes Jesper Parnevik’s rant against Tiger Woods. (Parnevik introduced Woods to his wife Elin.)

There’s also college football, including the video of the Florida State lineman who remained in place while the play unfolded around him. But the real football news starts tonight with Oregon vs Oregon State followed by other big matchups this Saturday. It should be a fun weekend.

  1. Adore the driver vs. the 3 iron point.

    Tee it up baby.

  2. I’ll wait for the Packers vs. the Ravens.

It’ll be me and Tony Shaloub vs. Hugh Hewitt.

  3. Nah. Not interested in sports either.

You want my “News Christmas List”? I’d like to see the blog posting in which a staffer in Nancy Pelosi’s office has leaked all of her email to the internet and we discover that she despises the people who voted for her.

I’d like to see the blog post in which Obama’s handpicked Board of Directors at General Motors decides they like running a private business and takes him to court for unconstitutionally seizing a private industry.

I’d like to see the blog post in which a disgruntled White House employee misprogrammed the teleprompter and Obama read outloud an entire speech from Ronald Reagan without realizing it.

I’d like to see the blog post in which it is revealed that Andrew Sullivan has only 3 readers but he’s been maintaining hundreds of false identities in order to have comments. And Keith Olberman is taken off the air because the network discovers that both of his viewers have left the country to move to Cuba.

That’ll give you a start. And there are only 22 blogging days until Christmas!!! Better get a move on.

  4. Boy, this is a tough crowd.

  5. In regards to El Tigre, I have only one question. Oprah or Barbara? I’m going to go with Oprah because only she can grant total absolution.

  6. The big sports news for me comes tomorrow: FIFA is conducting the draw to determine the groups for the first round of the world cup.

  7. Is that for the drug-test order?

  8. How about BYU QB Max Hall exploding on the media his message of “Hate” directed to all of the Utes, the university, the program, the fans etc etc etc…?

    Mad Max’s Thunder

    Mad Max’s “sportsmanship first” fans.

That lady and young girl are the wife and daughter of Ute coach Wittingham.

  9. aphrael, it sounds like the U.S. is going to be screwed with a very tough draw. It’s going to take a hell of an effort to get past the first round, but maybe our guys have finally arrived.

Regarding Tiger, the best debate going around it to what degree he deserves privacy in his personal life. I generally think that athletes and entertainers are due a measure of respect of their privacy, but I am not sure Tiger qualifies. If all Tiger Woods were was a golfer, then I wouldn’t care a fig about his tomcatting (see how I use “tomcat” when discussing Tiger; clever, no?). Tiger, however, along with Nike, Buick, Gatorade, and the rest of them, has spent the past decade-plus telling us that he is so much bigger than just golf. Google or Lexis/Nexis search the terms “Tiger Woods” along with “transcend” or “more than golf” or any other term. Go back to his selection as Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman of the Year in 1996, before he had even won a major tournament, and read their utter pap about his destiny and how he would “change the world.” If you are going to step into the limelight with all that, then frankly you had damn well better expect that everything you do will be scrutinized and commented upon.

  10. I almost wonder if the lineman has absence seizures.

Most of the Big Ten, except Wisconsin, have already started their yearly Big Mistake when it comes to preparing for bowl games. SEC, Big 12, and PAC 10 are still playing, most Big Ten teams have not seen a game for almost 2 weeks already.

As far as Tiger goes, I think he has said enough, probably would have been better to say things sooner than when he did, but again, it might have been the new release by the waitress out west that forced his hand. His family deserves the privacy at least.

I can understand Parnevik having some particular concerns about the situation, but I don’t think his comments were particularly helpful to anybody. If anything, he might have been in a good position to be quiet publically and be of some help to them privately. Obviously he may have his reasons, good ones even.

Since it is open thread, I’m looking forward to Favre winning his 4th MVP and the USA women’s hockey team winning a gold medal (so they can have one like their coach, Mark Johnson, of the 1980 team- Miracle is a great movie).

Following Gesundheit’s idea, I’m looking for emails between Obama and Ayers and other Alinskites, and the FBI file on Obama from prior years based on his associations.

  11. I linked this about a week ago on a sports thread but don’t know if anyone saw it. (Of course with 1.2 million views quite a few people here have probably seen it already.)
Plano East vs. John Tyler from 1994. Great come back from a large deficit late in the game.

  12. I am guessing Tiger is not going to turn to Jesse Jackson for a session of “healing” like Clinton did.

    Huey (b957d9)

  13. UT v. Nebraska. I’m already nervous.

    LASue (5f0073)

  14. If Tiger goes on Oprah or 60 Minutes, he will immediately drop to my 2nd favorite athlete of all time.

I am looking forward to the Oregon vs Oregon State game tonite. The championship games this weekend will be fun. If for some reason Texas should lose, the BCS selection will be a free-for-all again.

My Illini had a great come-from-way behind win last night. I am still doing a happy dance.

  15. Geez! Jasper said she should use a driver, not a 3 iron? Did he have any recommendations for loft?
Graphite shaft versus steel? Of course she’ll hit from the lady’s tees.

  16. But the real football news starts tonight with Oregon vs Oregon State followed by other big matchups this Saturday.

    Go Beavers!

  17. Weird deal on Tiger. Golf at that level is played by guys who dont really exist, except on TV and, who are so concerned about their equilibrium, many don’t even drink coffee. This is not going to help in his quest to beat Jack’s record of 18 majors.

    james conrad (633fbc)

  18. I have a different perspective on that, James. I think that Tiger is going to re-focus on his family and golf, and that will result in more success, not less.

    JD (4a5c67)

  19. Tiger is going to change his name to Cheetah……

    %-)

    redc1c4 (fb8750)

  20. Red that is funny. Last night at dinner there was some discussion of his lineage. Some thought he was a quadroon, others said he was an octoroon. I corrected them all and said he was an ultra maroon.

    Gazzer (f4dafa)

  21. Philly sports fans definitely have some stories to enjoy. Placido Polanco gets lured away from the Tigers to go back to the Phillies for at least three years. And former MVP Allen aka Jewelz Iverson of “40 Bars” fame returns to the 76ers.

    SPC Jack Klompus (237c0e)

  22. Gazzer, I read an article years ago in which Tiger said he considers himself Asian, and made jokes about Blacks.

    PCD (1d8b6d)

  23. England, Slovenia, and Algeria … we can do this. 🙂

    aphrael (e0cdc9)

  24. I read an online article that stated that Kultida Woods (Tiger’s Mom) and Barbro Holmberg (Elin’s Mom) were both at the crash scene. What if Tiger wasn’t fleeing his wife, but his mother and mother-in-law?

    http://www.nydailynews.com/gossip/2009/12/03/2009-12-03_tiger_woods_mom_kultida_and_elin_nordegrens_mom_were_at_florida_mansion_at_time_.html
