Lede Buried

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 11:08 pm

In the sixth paragraph of this story about Obama’s upcoming Afghanistan decision, we see this:

Mr. Obama will also announce a change in the American goal—without calling attention to the new objective. His goal up to now has been to “defeat” al Qaeda. The new mission: to “dismantle and degrade” the terrorists.

Now let’s go out there and beat the enemy dismantle and degrade the enemy!

  1. he might as well announce his true goal….

smoking straight crack in lieu of national policy until he has to leave office. i have to now agree with the old canard: the White House *IS* the rock house.

hell, i’ve got field dirt in my old gear with more sense than this booger eating moron ever demonstrated when someone else was thinking for his sorry ass on his best day.

what the hell were y’all thinking when you elected this idiot?

  2. Isn’t degradation one of those prohibited “torture” thingys? Or wasn’t it at least “coercive” or something?

  3. What do the people that are “degraded” — debased & dishonored — but NOT defeated — brought to nothing (had their ability to fight completely taken away from them) — do?

That’s right: they regroup, more determined than ever to achieve their objective.

    Thank you, Chump-in-Charge!
    Thank you, Chimpanzee-in-Feces!
Thank you so very much, you spineless bimbo!!!

  4. I’m all for dismantling the terrorists limb from limb and degrading them so my tulips will grow more plentiful and taller. 🙂

  5. “The Secret Details of Obama’s Afghan Plan”

Well, it was a secret until everyone started talking about it in the papers.

Now, it isn’t a secret anymore. That’s a good thing, because now Al Qaida will know we’re sending more troops, and how many, and can plan accordingly, so the war will be more fair.

  6. Somehow, I don’t think Lincoln would have picked Gen. U.S. (“Unconditional Surrender”) Grant to assume command of the Army of the Potomac and overall command of the U.S. Army if he’d merely “dismantled and degraded” the Confederate fortress at Vicksburg but still left the Mississippi subject to blockage there.

  7. Weird, how words don’t seem to mean anything to our dear reader.

  8. This means we’re going to divide them up and make them do embarrassing things?

  9. This President shows bold potential… a few more years mentoring under Chavez and he’ll have it down. Right off of wikileaks, the new foreign policy manual for handling national security threats:

annoy and anger* (reserved for former allies)
    bow and befuddle
    confuse and criticize
    daze and devalue
engage and enlist* (apparently this one is under review following the recent army base shooting)
feign and fake* (strategy assigned to VP Biden for the handling of jobs “creation”)
    goof and gaff
harass and hate* (reserved for domestic terrorists including soccer moms, Palin fans, teabaggers who aren’t actually gay deviant democrats but actually tax protesters, conservatives, church goers, business professionals)
imprison and interrogate* (assigned to Nancy Pelosi for forcing health care compliance. Note: no longer valid for immigrants or terrorists)

  10. Bloody effing hell.

Isn’t degrading what we did to the Weimar Republic after WW1? Yeah, that worked out well.

I wish this was surprising, but coming from the Surrenderer in Chief, meh.

    Andrew Jackson. Paging Andrew Jackson.

Daniel Boone? Davy Crockett? George S. Patton? Anyone?

  11. Funny that. High school mean girls elevate dismantling and degrading their enemies to a high art form all across America.

  12. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen you walk into a military enlistment office.
    Chicken hawks.

  13. Mawy forgets that we have three veterans here who’ve served in the current conflict – but then again, Mawy’s a little girl, so we can’t expect her to understand anything above the reading level of Highlights for Children. Better stay out of the eggnog, Mawy – you’ll get sick and make an awful mess of your new party dress.

Isn’t degrading what we did to the Weimar Republic after WW1? Yeah, that worked out well.

But this time it will be different, Vivian – Obama and Axelrod are planning to call AQ and the Taliban Big Poopy – Pants, so the ensulting degradation of that commentary will cause them to lose all hope and surrender unconditionally. As they like to say, this line of attack will be unprecedented during wartime.

  15. It is now time to conduct an engineering study to determine the load-bearing values of the Embassy roof in Kabul –
wouldn’t want it to collapse under the weight of the helicopters and people waiting to board them during the future bug-out…no… evacuation…no…
    ah, yes… re-deployment!

  16. “I don’t believe I’ve ever seen you walk into a military enlistment office. Chicken hawks.”

Kinda like Woodrow Wilson, Frank Roosevelt and Bill Clinton.

    Dave Surls (ec9922)

  17. Oh, yeah, I almost forgot, our new c-in-c doesn’t have a whole lot of previous military experience either.

    Dave Surls (ec9922)

  18. Hell, he doesn’t have a whole lot of any kind of experience.

  19. Quick poll:

    1) Have you ever been a member of the military?

    2) Do you have any children or siblings currently in the military?

For me, yes on both counts.

    John Hitchcock (3fd153)

  20. 1) No. Sadly. Medical, knee thing, doc said no way. Recruiter said no way.

    2) Uncle, son-in-law, brother, multiple nephews – all services except Coast Guard.

    Vivian Louise (643333)

  21. Wait, didn’t we prosecute people for degrading terrorists in Abu Ghraib?

  22. I tried to enlist in the Marine Corp. reserve three times in ’88 and ’89. Got as far as MEPS the first time. Doctors kicked me out because of my vision, and were a little pissed at the recruiters for wasting their time with someone whose vision was so bad. The Marines were even more pissed off, my head recruiter, a Gunnery Sergeant, and the MEPS chief, who was a Marine Major, were mad enough to spit nails. They did not get very many walkin candidates who scored 99 on the ASVAB and had 1700 combined on the SAT.
My plan at the time was to serve in the reserve until I was done with college and then go to OCS.
I tried twice more to get waivers but the situation was truly hopeless. The military at the time (and I believe now) will not take anyone who has had surgical correction for vision problems.
My younger brother had gone to Navy OCS right out of college in ’87, and recently retired with twenty years service.

  23. “…Dismantle and Degrade the terrorists” Barry
Is this Military Speak? Chicago Chic? Basketball Badinage?

I must insist that the order be changed to read “Degrade and Dismantle” because I know from long experience that it’s absolutely impossible to degrade a terrorist after he’s been dismantled!

    So, first degrade, then dismantle!

The nearest analogy I can give you is of the acolyte who wanted to be an Apache Brave. He was told that initiation required him to fight a grizzly and sleep with a woman. He went out and returned two days later, bruised, scatched, lacerated and asked where the woman he was required to fight lived!
