Republican candidate Chris Christie has taken an early lead over incumbent Governor Jon Corzine in the New Jersey Governor’s race, but reports suggest this race won’t be decided until tomorrow or later.

The New York Times is updating the New Jersey vote here.

UPDATE: AP calls it for Christie as does ABC. CBS, Fox News, and CNN headlines also show Christie the winner.

  1. it will be decided when the Donkeys steal, fake, or otherwise conjure up enough votes to win… at which point all counting will cease.

prior to that, the mantra will be “but we want every vote to count….”

(the “again, and again, and again..” is a given)

    welcome to the 3rd world.

  2. This will last a while, and will end in a lawsuit.

  3. 64 percent of precincts in, Christie has a 6 per cent lead.

Not exactly Reagan/Mondale, but there won’t be any basis for legal challenge if the lead holds.

  4. A blow-out in VA, coupled with a R win in NJ and this is shaping up to be a bad bad bad night for Barcky.

  5. Tom Delay thought it made more sense to stretch the rules in redistricting, and look good in the short term, than to use their power, their rare confluence of senate + white house + house to think LONG TERM.

Voting rights reforms, including ID, strong census and redistricting controls, things like that, were critical things the GOP should have put in place. In a few generations, there’s a demographic problem for the GOP. Perhaps it can be fixed eventually, perhaps not, but the long term thinking should have been to mandate essential steps to protect the vote, perhaps standardizing election processes and creating some kind of election law enforcement agency / article III court. They never even got HAVA implemented!

Now, Obama’s census is going to delete entire red districts and create problems that won’t be easy to repair. Voting fraud is going to be a huge problem.

Why didn’t the GOP take this duty seriously? From a financial perspective alone, it was a disastrous move. These lawsuits always are a nightmare for GOP election day efforts.

  6. Fox just projected Christie for NJ. 8:28 AZ time.

  7. I’ve updated the post with links showing most of the major media sources declaring Christie the winner.

  8. New Jersey is a red state?

That’s… just wrong. I’m sure some helpful local lawyers can fix that.

  9. NJ going Republican is a pretty big deal. Especially given the star power of Corzine and Barcky.

  10. JD, add that to the simple poor physical appearance of the GOP candidate, the third party effect, and this is just stunning. I guess someone out there made a lot of cash on intrade.

    Dustin (bb61e3)

  11. WOW, intrade puts all the dem candidates in single digits. And all of them appear to have favors the dems very recently. NY 23 shifts 67 points in a day? I think the left is gaming that site and ruining its value, but it’s cute to watch.

  12. Wow, this and Virginia gov’s race are rather sharp slaps in the face to Democrats.

  13. One thing I notice about this race is that the polls showed Daggett with 10-11% of the vote — and when asked for their second choice, the Daggett supporters split between Christie and Corzine — but tonight’s results show Daggett with only 5-6% of the vote. Meanwhile, the polls said Christie and Corzine were in a dead heat at 42% but tonight’s vote is currently 49-44 for Christie. So it looks like the only Daggett supporters who defected were the Christie supporters.

  14. Christie is giving a speech, mentions Corzine’s name, saying he pledged a smooth transition. the republicans cheer. It’s unusual… usually you expect to hear a lot of boos, but they are cheering and polite.

Maddow breaks in, cuts off the speech, and says Christie was unable to stop booing and jeering from his supporters are Corzine. An obvious lie, and you can even see the lie on her face. She goes to some gay marriage thing, spending much, much more time on that than on New Jersey going to a republican.

WOW. I’m supposed to believe Rachel over my lying ears? What a trashy thing to do… cutting off the victory speech of a huge upset, just to lie about the supporters. She’s still on the gay marriage Maine vote… easily spending ten times as much time on that.

MSNBC isn’t even calling NY, so I have hope for Hoffman.

  15. This is big as Republican governors can prevent gerrymanders and both these states have a lot of Congresscritters.

  16. By the way, that show’s big sponser is Chrysler.

  17. AP calls it for Christie as does ABC. CBS, Fox News, and CNN headlines also show Christie the winner.

One wish I have if Christie prevails: In the event the guy has any RINO tendencies, I hope he doesn’t bring them to the office.

    Blacque Jacques Shellacque (76097c)

  18. I think Christie will have to meet the typical definition of RINO if he has any chance of holding that crumbling state together. right now, they have serious administrative problems. They need to get some basic sense for survival, and I hope Christie is up to the task. It’s going to be hard to clean up the mess the democrats have made in this corrupt state.

I wish New Jersey luck. They are obviously hurting to give the GOP a chance.
