Unlucky Criminals

Having a rough day? It could be worse:

“Sheriff’s deputies spotted a car speeding in the 14100 block of Thermal Drive and began a pursuit with lights and a siren on, according to the affidavit. The suspect ran a red light at Wells Branch Parkway and headed south on Interstate 35. The driver weaved erratically in and out of traffic at speeds of up to 115 mph with law enforcement officers following him, the affidavit said.

In the 2700 block of I-35 in San Marcos, an officer awaiting the fleeing suspect deployed devices called stingers in the road, flattening the front right tire. The suspect drove the car into the grass at the side of the highway and ran into a wooded area where he was bitten by a snake, the affidavit said.”

The suspect is apparently fine. Arrested but fine.

    Did the snake die?

  2. Sometimes those snakeouts are worth all the waiting around.

  3. Would it have been ethical for the driver of the car to bite the snake in retaliation at that point, or not? Discuss.

  5. Given the normal traffic on I-35 in San Marcos, the 115 mph speed is the thing that shocked me more than the snake.

  6. Me too, John. Getting bit by a snake is a lot safer than going that speed on I-35.

  7. Sorry, DRJ, but going slower than 115 on I-35 is more dangerous than a snake bite. Especially when those 18-wheelers are doing 120.

But San Marcos and Hillsboro are outliers.

  8. Speaking of going fast, I like that new toll road between Austin and Round Rock. I made it from the airport to Round Rock in 20 minutes, I think. I can’t remember the exact time but it was prompt.

  9. AUS to Round Rock in 20 minutes?

That’s worth more than a couple of dollars. Austin’s infrastructure has really needed some help. If they had just spent all this Cap Metro Train money on roads, I suspect they could have easily made life better and safer for everyone in the area. Not to mention shaped the sprawl they are so scared of by making it easier to live in places that no one minds filling up with people. Oh, fooey.

AG80, I agree that Central Texas I-35 drivers are aggressive, but it’s the one place in Texas where there’s often a flipped over 18 Wheeler on Monday and someone going 65 in the left lane on Friday night.

  13. Perfect ending. This one should wind up on “World’s Worst Drivers”.
