Olympia Snowe: “When History Calls, History Calls.”

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 10:48 pm

That’s her reasoning for voting the Baucus thingie out of conference without the benefit of that legislative language that nobody reads anyway:

Personally, I don’t get calls from History, because I’m on the Do Not Call list. I have no previous business relationship with History, so legally he must leave me alone. But if History did call, I would probably want to mess with it. Kinda like this:

By the way, Senator, when you’re quoting Longfellow in explaining why you’re voting the way you are, you’re establishing that you are a gasbag. Just some unsolicited advice for ya there.

  1. One step closer to a governmet takeover of 18% of our economy, on top of the massive percentage it already controls.

    tyree (bf0ee2)

  2. You know, History may indeed be calling, and Senator Snowe may not like what history will have to say about her actions.

That’s the trouble with this whole Change business. Change is not always good.

Actually, I don’t think that History would be very happy with legislators passing bills that they haven’t even read. I’m just sayin’.

    Eric Blair (8484db)

  3. “History is calling” is simply a platitudinous way of saying “I have no way to justify this intellectually, but I know my political ass in Maine is toast if I don’t support it.” It is what we should expect when we elect second-raters like Olympia Snowe (and, well, just about every other U.S. Senator) to office.

    JVW (8706ba)

  4. Just for the record, I support any and all efforts to run her out of the party, if such efforts arise, preferably before a final vote on health care. While she’s still a Repub, she represents one of the clear and present dangers to the public option.

She’s no friend of yours: Spector-ize her.

    Myron (712b1e)

  5. She, along with many of her collegues, need to be guests of honor at a T&F party.
Run her out of the party???
    Hell No!
Run her out of the country!

  6. Have I missed it before or is this the 1st use of the f-word? I thought your posts were profanity-free.

    estee (b75816)

  7. estee,

I’m mostly f-word free but I’m not religious about it. I posted this draft in the middle of a chat and forgot about the whole profanity thing; it’s how I usually speak (sorry!) but I usually go back and try to moderate such language in editing. Here I posted hastily so you’re getting me unfiltered; sorry ’bout that.

    Patterico (64318f)

  8. There you go, I took it out. Totally unnecessary; had I not been in a chat it never would have seen the light of day.

  10. She’s just pandering to the moderate Dems in her state that vote for her.

    Icy Texan (6fdd44)

  11. History calls and this hag can’t pay the phone bill. She and Lindsey Graham need to be out-sourced.

    krusher (6f6e76)

  12. it was a robo call from the dinosaur museum….

her display is ready and she can move in whenever she’s ready.

to my mind, that would be now.

  13. It just confirms how weak kneed the Republican Party is.
She should have had her stripes ripped off her sleeve and drummed out of the corp., err party, a long time ago.
She is the epitome of all that is wrong with Steele and the party.
Hopefully, history or the voters will catch up to her.
Sure glad we have no ruling class in this country.

  14. Tyranny is on the march.

    Comment by AD – RtR/OS! — 10/14/2009 @ 12:54 am

    Amen.

“When History calls” – Psheah. Not much one can say to that that will get through to a head so crammed with self-importance. The Longfellow to justify “I may change my vote tomorrow if I can gain advantage from that” is just the icing on the cake.

    no one you know (1ebbb1)

  16. I wish she had to step out and miss the vote because nature called.

Instead she stayed in the room and dumped all over other Republicans.

Why does this woman call herself a Republican? She and her Maine twin both are two of the more reliable Dem votes.

    MU789 (3f9d29)

  17. Again, let me at least file a concurring opinion here.

Yes, Ms. Snowe, history was calling. You had an occasion to rise to. You had a chance to strike a blow for economic freedom. You could have at least sold your vote for significant reforms to this monstrosity of a bill.

Instead you just threw in with what you apparently think is inevitable. History was calling and you failed to rise to the occasion.

    Shame on you.

    A.W. (e7d72e)

  18. “When history calls, history calls…,”but when the American people I’m paid to represent reject government takeover of the health care system, I screen my calls.

However the little people can always leave a message, or call my office to register their inconsequential opinions. They always feel so much better after they yell at my taxpayer funded minions.

Hee, hee, we put their names on my sucker list and send out letters asking for campaign contributions. You wouldn’t believe it, but some of the numskulls actually pony up, duh.

Oh, yeah, forget all that silly old nonsense about the need to “Beware of Greeks bearing gifts.” Why would anyone look askance at a gift, especially one from the mommy government?

    Has everyone got my number?

    ropelight (8dcd85)

  19. I’m looking at her name tag and thinking … Ms. Snowe? Really, she worked so hard to become a Senator, and the nametag says Ms.?

    carlitos (ad57b1)

  20. she probably negotiated a waiver for any increase in her State’s Medicaid contributions.

    davod (bce08f)

  21. Just remember that Snowe and others of her ilk will never have to worry about their healthcare plans – and those same Cadillac plans will never be taxed, either.

    Dmac (5ddc52)

  22. What you guys don’t seem to understand is that Maine enacted a somewhat similar health care bill a few years ago and their premiums are going through the roof. Now, you can’t expect all those Maniacs to sit up there freezing and let the rest of us get away with lower health care costs, can you ? I mean after all, they’ve been hoping for global warming for at least a decade, ever since Al Gore announced it, and now it is colder than ever. Time to spread the punishment.

    Mike K (187f3b)

  23. Just out of curiosity: Does anybody give Snowe any credit for representing her state?

Personally, I don’t like that Blanche Lincoln is making health care so difficult to pass from our side, but I do recognize that in her state of Arkansas, she has a wholly different set of considerations than say, Nancy Pelosi in California.

Maine is not even a little bit wishy-washy about universal care: They want it. Maybe it’s for the reasons Mike K says, but they definitely are four-square behind health care reform.

I’m sure Snowe is getting calls and emails from around the country, but political wisdom tells us that the numerous calls and emails she is getting from Maine residents probably has a greater impact.

Of course, Susan Collins is hanging tough … for now?

    Myron (6a93dd)

  24. Just out of curiosity: Does anybody give Snowe any credit for representing her state?

    No.

    carlitos (ad57b1)

  25. Carlitos: OK. Can’t get more direct than that. 🙂

    Myron (6a93dd)

  26. Why in hell should that matter, Myron? Should we admire Pelosi for respresenting her nutbag constituents from Bezerkely? Stop with the strawman arguments for once in your life, and stick to the subject at hand.

    Dmac (5ddc52)

  27. Just out of curiosity, why do you even post here? Many of us are wondering about your reasons, since you don’t seem to have any coherent ones to offer.

    Dmac (5ddc52)

  28. Now Olympia Snowe, a Republican senator has suddenly become the enemy. She did the right thing and History will vindicate her. We need more Republicans like that. Sensible, smart, bipartisan, ideas-oriented. Not ditto-heads!

    The Emperor (1b037c)

  29. Hey, I wonder where Snowe stands on the whole drugging thirteen year old girls and raping them?

Emperor, as soon as you start acting less like a jerk, then I will stop reminding people of the thread where you acted like such a immature and insulting person, repeatedly.

    Like this one:

    https://patterico.com/2009/10/11/roman-polanski-is-depressed/#comment-565635

I like the part where you later claimed that you thought Polanski should be punished, about two hours after that post. Contradiction? Not on Planet Emperor.

And I think people need to see that post, each and every time you hold forth with your great wisdom, that you claim is shared by the Bible and millions of people, as you state here:

    https://patterico.com/2009/10/11/roman-polanski-is-depressed/#comment-566339

Also, in that thread, notice the consistent juvenile personal attacks on others.

I urge others to keep reminding readers of this person’s prior statements.

Again, until s/he starts acting less like a troll, and more like a commenter.

  30. Bi-partisan is when one Republican goes along with a moronic idea presented by Democrats. When 40 Democrats join the Republicans opposing such idiocy that is Republican obstructionism.

    Have Blue (854a6e)

  31. Why in hell should that matter, Myron?

Dmac: Why in hell should it matter that a Maine senator represent Maine? Federalism? Democracy? What answer are you looking for here?

    Myron (6a93dd)

  32. Dmac: I owe you no explanation of my motives. I post here. That’s all you need to know.

    Myron (6a93dd)

  33. Myron, at least you are civil. Thank you for that.

    Eric Blair (0b61b2)

  34. Now Olympia Snowe, a Republican senator has suddenly become the enemy.

Emperor: Mainly on the right-wing and in the blogosphere. I have noted the party leaders’ response. It’s mainly been along the lines of: “She’s independent. We’re disappointed” etc. etc.

They have been somewhat muted. It’s a smart strategy. They know they still may get her to vote against the final bill.

    Myron (6a93dd)

  35. Myron, at least you are civil. Thank you for that.

Most of the time, I try to be. I do get heated, as we all do, and get needlessly snarky sometimes. I’m trying to improve on that.

And even though I don’t agree with most of the comments here, I find this site to be must reading b/c, when you cut pass the various digs, there is thought-provoking material here and it’s a good snapshot for me of how “the other side” thinks. I often find the other side is not as crazy as I thought. 🙂

“Planet Emperor.” I like that.. Perfect!

    The Emperor (1b037c)

  37. If the Democrats do pass legislation, something becoming increasingly unlikely as the rats investigate the railings of the ship, it will be a huge disaster for Democrats. This is because they will preside over a catastrophe of epic proportions when they find themselves caught in exploding budget deficits. The country will turn on them quickly and has already begun to do so as a result of the disasterous “stimulus”.

  38. Planet Chimperor was not a compliment, lovie.

    JD (cfbd15)

  39. Well, Myron, based on #36, I would be a little careful saying folks around here aren’t as crazy as you thought.

    Eric Blair (0b61b2)

  40. JD, your statement brings up “Planet of the Apes.” Nice.

    Eric Blair (0b61b2)

  41. SPQR – That is exactly why it will not be implemented until 2013. Because a crisis demands action 3-4 years from now.

    JD (cfbd15)

  42. Maine is not even a little bit wishy-washy about universal care: They want it. Maybe it’s for the reasons Mike K says, but they definitely are four-square behind health care reform.

Did Maine enact health care reform within its borders?

    Michael Ejercito (6a1582)

  43. History calls? Please, how self-important and pompous can she sound?

  44. Anyone know history’s cell number? I have a few words for he/she/it.
Hint – When history asks you to support dirty little socialisms, you should hang up on it like when a telemarketer calls during the middle of a delightful meal.

I speak the same way, I admit. But I get weary sometimes of seeing so much profanity in the blogosphere. Your site seems to avoid that conceit so this post surprised me.

Funny prank call gag, by the way.

    estee (3fbbf5)

  46. I think Maine did enact some kind of health care, like Mass., but they’re finding it prohibitively expensive, which may explain her and Collins’ support. The Mainers want it but they can’t afford it, so the plan is to stick the rest of us with it.

    Rochf (ae9c58)

  47. I speak the same way, I admit. But I get weary sometimes of seeing so much profanity in the blogosphere. Your site seems to avoid that conceit so this post surprised me.

Took it off once you reminded me of it. I really was just distracted b/c I was putting it up in a hurry. I retain the right to curse for shock value or other good reasons, but it’s not shocking if you do it all the time.

    Patterico (64318f)

  48. Sometimes it’s inappropriate not to curse. Many times a day, really. This is just part of living in little president man’s America of dirty socialist oppression and decline.

    happyfeet (71f55e)

  49. That’s gotta be Screech’s mom, right?

    Dagwood (7eec65)

  50. happyfeet–don’t you mean the dirty socialist’s America of dirty socialist oppression and decline?
Not to belabor the point, or anything.

    Rochf (ae9c58)

  51. that’s a good point… we’re in a pickle however you look at it though … I sometimes think the little president man wants to contrive a little country so loathsome as to wholly alienate her from any and all domestic affections. He’s showing quite the knack for this sort of thing and his Jeffy Immelt media are very helpful as well.

    happyfeet (71f55e)

  52. Well, at least he has the 5 Nobel Peace Prize committee members warming up to us, even though the rest of the world and most of the country are up in arms.

    Rochf (ae9c58)

  53. I think Maine did enact some kind of health care, like Mass., but they’re finding it prohibitively expensive, which may explain her and Collins’ support. The Mainers want it but they can’t afford it, so the plan is to stick the rest of us with it.

Why is it that people who loudly complain about not having government-run health care not move to places like Maine, Massachussetts, or Tennessee?

Come to think of it, advocates of universal health care always point to foreign countries instead of using domestic examples.

    Michael Ejercito (6a1582)

I like all the words in the English language and for that very reason think we need to use the curse words less. Not only to teach children not to be profane but almost equally to preserve what they were meant for: expressing strongly what sometimes needs to be expressed strongly. Shock is a good thing sometimes. And cursing, like silver, loses its currency the more common it becomes.

Greater and sincere words have never been spoken. I hope to be like that, me host. I look up to you a lot. But sometimes folks won’t just let that happen. F-k them! Ooops! Sorry. 🙂

  58. Yes, I think they repealed TennCare finding that it almost bankrupted the state. Of course, by applying it to the whole country, the system will surely work. (heavy sarcasm).
