DNC Spokesman: Mocking Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize Makes You a Terrorist Sympathizer. Or Something

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 1:07 pm

As earlier, I am not kidding:

“The Republican Party has thrown in its lot with the terrorists – the Taliban and Hamas this morning – in criticizing the President for receiving the Nobel Peace prize,” DNC communications director Brad Woodhouse told POLITICO. “Republicans cheered when America failed to land the Olympics and now they are criticizing the President of the United States for receiving the Nobel Peace prize – an award he did not seek but that is nonetheless an honor in which every American can take great pride – unless of course you are the Republican Party.”

No, it’s something to laugh at.

  1. Trying to turn Honduras over to communists, abandoning Afghan girls to the Taliban, all great accomplishments.

Reminds me of the Soviets rationale for not allowing Sweden, Switzerland and Spain to join the UN. They were not “peace loving nations”, in that they had not fought against the Soviet Unions enemies. (Ignoring that those enemies were the Soviets allies when the war started.)

  2. Can’t help but wonder if internal White House polling showed Obama slipping quietly into the mid 40 approval numbers after the olympic fiasco.

Nobel prizes have been rumored to be available for years for the right price.

Maybe a phone call to Soros was made and certain bank accounts set up.

    Stranger things have happened.

  3. I was just making that joke myself. Oh, wait….

    Kevin Murphy (805c5b)

  4. Note that the Nobel committee head thinks the Berlin Wall came down because of the efforts of Willi Brandt and Ostpolitik.

[Jagland] likened this year’s award to the one in 1971, which recognized Willy Brandt, then the chancellor of West Germany, and his “Ostpolitik” policy of reconciliation with Communist Eastern Europe.

“Brandt hadn’t achieved much when he got the prize, but a process had started that ended with the fall of the Berlin Wall,” Mr. Jagland said

  5. The price tag is an ambassador appointment for George Soros, to Copenhagen to boost the local economy.

  6. Mather – Believe me the Nobel commitee would be more than willing to take this action with no monetary incentive. The person who was going to get this award was whoever could be stood up to make GWB look bad. Osama and Zawhiri would have been going a little too far, and most of Europe is far too close to supporting Bush so Obama gets it. The laughable part of this is that Obama has done nothing to change the things they have complained about. Gitmo, renditions, Patriot Act, troops overseas, etc. nothing is different – except some touchy feelly, “We Are The World” crap.

  9. Wait, the Taliban was not our adversary, and now they are again? Leave aside the conflation of Chicago and America, a concept so difficult to grasp apparently, for Leftists.

  11. I wonder if it makes Obama wonder about all the other overpraising he’s gotten over the years.

I mean, does he think “Wow, this is the first time I’ve gotten a huge accolade I didn’t deserve!”?

    MayBee (34a54a)

  12. Obama says Nobel Peace Prize is “call to action”

InTrade had action with Hu Jia, Morgan Tsvangirai, Thich Quang Do, Ingrid Betancourt, Nicolas Sarkozy, Tony Blair, with Pete Seeger having the most, just behind “Anyone else.”
Obama was listed but had no action as did Michael Jackson and Bono.

“Obama has done nothing to change the things they have complained about. Gitmo, renditions, Patriot Act, troops overseas, etc. nothing is different”

So why does the President not deserve the award for materially staying the course while making the rest of the world feel good about that? That’s the essence of diplomacy. The proprietor and commentators on this site are just upset that the President, who is quite good at that aspect of diplomacy, is being rewarded for it.

    Cyrus Sanai (3b1f29)

  14. Does the DNC now know that even leftists are mocking this choice?

    JD (e208be)

  15. Well, this American Conservative takes great pride in the fact that President Obama of the USA took 2 weeks to equal the Peace Prize count of Mother Theresa who took more than 29 years to earn one. Who says we are not the most productive people on the planet?

    tyree (bf0ee2)

  16. I’m embarrassed he would accept it.

I’ve been embarrassed for a lot longer than that – I was embarrassed when he said that Iran was a “small country,” and when he started his world apology tour for our sin of attempting to free countries from tyrannical and murderous dictators. I was embarrassed for so many things, this doesn’t even rank in the top 20 at this point.

    Dmac (5ddc52)

  17. Something hilarious at the CBSNews site. They quote Steve Clemons at the Washington Note saying, “Obama’s efforts to talk the world into a better place have indeed created opportunities that were hard to imagine during the Bush administration.”

“talk the world into a better place”

I can’t think of a better description of Obama’s entire administration and strategy. Talk Iran into being nice. Talk Hugo Chavez into loving America. Talk health care costs into declining. Talk the economy into recovery and talk jobs into existence. With all Obama’s hot air we may end up with a global warming problem after all.

    Gesundheit (47b0b8)

  18. I think Daniel Pipes has the best take. He thinks that this is an attempt to foreclose any possibility that Obama will stand up to Iran. Unfortunately, the Prize cannot be awarded to those who are deceased or Neville Chamberlain might be a candidate next year.

    Mike K (2cf494)

  19. According to the DNC asshat, Ezra Klein is just like Hamas and the Tollybawn.

    JD (6864d5)

  20. Patterico, i think you need to change the tagline of this site to “no, this is not a humor site.” There is some real blurring these days between the Onion and hard news, mostly because it is hard to top the ridiculousness of the real stuff.

    A.W. (e7d72e)

  21. The Republican Party has thrown in its lot with the terrorists – the Taliban and Hamas this morning – in criticizing the President for receiving the Nobel Peace prize.

I expect a statement from the DNC shortly, saying that since the Republicans laughed at Jesse Jackson Jr.’s call for a new chapter of the Bible to be written in Obama’s Honor, and think Newsweek’s Evan Thomas was equally ridiculous for saying that Obama is “sort of a god,” we’ve thrown in our lot with Satan.

After all, isn’t having a President who’s sort-of-a-god with his own chapter in the Bible an “honor in which every American can take great pride?”

It’s going to be awkward at any laureate get-togethers, though. What with Obama being unwilling to meet with the Dalai Lama.

Maybe that’s why we should all support Obama’s elevation to god status. For two reasons. It’d be in keeping with the whole Roman-empire theme at his nomination at the 2008 DNC. And his refusal to meet with the Dalai Lama or bossing around the Pope is an appropriate godly punishment to his wayward subordinates.

Just to show that I’m onboard with the idea that Obama is so supersmart that he’s playing the game at such a high level that mere mortals can’t comprehend, I reject the conventional wisdom.

He didn’t refuse to see the Dalai Lama out of deference to the Communist Chinese.

He did it to placate our new partners in peace in Afghanistan. The Taliban, enemies of the Buddhas of Bamyan.

    What farsighted genius!

  22. Why wasn’t it an honor all Americans can be proud of to see Bush awarded stuff?

In fact, it seems like bashing Bush and trying to cause him to fail is why Carter and Gore got their awards. Now, a dem being president means all Americans should take pride in the highly ridiculous and partisan stunts claiming the president is great.

LOL. That view is logically inconsistent with bashing Bush. Period.

  23. So what do Chrissie “I squat to pee” Matthews and nancy boy Olbermann think of the prize? Did they get erections?

  33. French President Nicolas Sarkozy said the Nobel honor is a tribute to Mr. Obama’s commitment to “tolerance and dialogue between states, cultures and civilizations

The French leader said the choice of Mr. Obama confirms the “return of America into the hearts of the people of the world.”*

    yay! tolerance and dialogue!

Your destiny is tied to your mouth.

The Emperor who now deserves a Nobel Peace Prize. (1b037c)

  36. I’m just kind of mortified. I’m embarrassed he would accept it.

I felt mortified when Al Gore accepted the award for something to do with hysterical weather and did not have the class or humility to step down and proclaim that there was no way he could accept the award in light of fellow nominee, Irena Sendler, who actually did something remarkably noble, and something that changed the lives of untold thousands whose lives literally hung in the balance.

I just always believed the award demanded one had to accomplish something that affected positively the lives of others. But there has to be something.

  41. Lamentably, the Nobel Peace Prize has become an international joke. It carries no credibility, it honors no one, least of all the selection committee who awards it, and it stands as a monument to socialist thinking in a world gone mad. Who cares any more? Who pays any attention? Who does anything but laugh? It is indeed a joke. A bad one at that.

    MikeD (c83900)

  42. Indeed, the Nobel Peace prize has been a joke for some time, but now the committee has figured out the punch line.

    Unbelievable.

  43. This Nobel was for Peace, not Narcissism or Celebrity?

    daleyrocks (718861)

  44. #33 OIDO: I note that your quote of the constitution includes “without the Consent of the Congress” Congress already issued a blanket consent many generations ago, and of course, a couple of presidents already won nobel prizes.

It’s a problem, in my view, as it’s a bribe and it’s obviously a foreign parliament issueing a title to our president. He’s forever now “Nobel Laurette”, and that will unfairly bias him against America’s interests (which is how he got the award in the first place, after all).

But it’s legal. This is one more of those problems that we should have prevented on election day. Thanks 52%, John Mccain, etc.

Don’t take too much offense. Reading Alfred Nobel’s will, it’s startling that Ghandi never won the prize. They nominated him 5 times, but never did he make the cut. Celebrity leaders tend to get this award. Al Gore is a great example. Reagan is the true giant of peace in our lifetimes, and does it really matter if some silly Jimmy Carter award instead goes to weenies who placate the tyrants that favor Norwegian slimeballs?

I think it’s just hilarious. Obama knows he has given much on behalf of America to secure this ‘honor’ for himself. I also have a sinking feeling that Obama will win reelection. The GOP is not even slightly in shape to challenge this level of corruption and power. We are still fighting over whether Palin is a leader or an idiot.

  46. How can mocking Barcky’s Nobel prize make you a terrorist? The terrorists endorsed Barcky last year, just look at the Hamas guys and their campaign contributions. The left is the same as the terrorists, not the right, get with the program. Why else is Barcky buttering up Chavez, Castro, Imadamnutjob,Assad and the “moderate” Taliban?

    daleyrocks (718861)

  47. Daleyrocks, it’s the Taliban the Democratic Party is lumping with anyone who doesn’t want Obama to have this award.

The Taliban, according to Obama, should have a place in ruling. Clearly, this is an attempt at welcoming the incoming GOP majority in the House.

In all seriousness, this ‘they are terrorists!’ is the most extreme demand for a prize I have ever seen in American history. An entire nation MUST give Obama credit for a prize? And in the same statement, they are willing to lie and claim they did not solicit this award? They are demanding we all march in lockstep to hand it to Obama! Of course they are demanding this prize.

How ugly. The democrats can not walk away from this: they are complete fascists.

    Dustin (bb61e3)

  48. by the way, I know you I am agreeing with you, and we are snarking.

This is probably obvious, but someone on here earlier completely missed that, so I didn’t want to be too unclear.

    Dustin (bb61e3)

  49. Dustin – I understand what you are saying, but you are aware that Hamas and Qadhafi, among others, endorsed Obama last year.

The left is just being opportunistic here because the Taliban said Obama did not deserve the Nobel prize, bur WTF, so did a bunch of prominent lefty bloggers. Hypocrisy is job one for the left.

    daleyrocks (718861)

Since you can’t defend this a rational choice, you can only defend it irrationally.

I hope Amused As Hell keeps demonstrating the concept.

This award is an expression of elitism, nothing more. The award is to thank Obama for sharing their delusions, particularly the idea that their delusions represent the views of the whole world, and a bribe to remain true to the views of the elite and ignore whatever domestic political pressure may be applied to alter his course.

It’s evident that when they try to defend it as an award for accomplishment, all they can say is that he has changed the mood of the world. Which is a pure distillation of their delusion.

Barack Obama’s election was due to empty, irrational emotionalism. So was his selection for the Nobel Peace Bribe.

There’s a difference between an expression of elitism and recognition of merit.
