Damn Grade Inflation

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 11:16 pm

At TIME, Mark Halperin is “grading” the Obama administration . . . and he gives Obama an A-:

Instantly comfortable and highly skilled at the hardest job in the world — proving his supporters’ contention that all the traits that made him a great candidate would serve him well in the White House: even temper, cool demeanor, boldness under pressure, shrewd facility for managing personnel, unfailing instincts about when to delegate and when to engage.

Grumpy Old Professor Tom Maguire snarks:

Obama’s approval rating has sagged (which is not inevitable); he surrendered control of the stimulus debate to Pelosi and Reid; he lost control of the health care debate to Pelosi, Reid, and any private citizen with a Facebook account; he has let climate change drift to the back burner until next year, when an election oriented Congress is sure to do nothing; and despite lofty rhetoric there is no way he will deliver on his promise to close Gitmo by year end.

Internationally Obama ired our allies on Iran, left ’em laughing in Copenhagen, and seems to inspire a lot more curiosity than respect around the world.

And rather than bringing Washington together Obama and his team are adopting a bunker mentality faster, and with less reason, than any White House in memory.

I shudder to think what a B+ would have looked like.

And do keep clicking once you reach that TIME link — but do it before lunch, lest you lose it. I won’t even tell you Michelle Obama’s “grade.”

Halperin’s entire series of posts is inane cheerleading — a totally unprofessional act of journalistic fellatio disguised as objectivity. It’s an utter joke.

I give it an A-.

UPDATE: Halperin’s nonsense is from a while back, so I (and many other bloggers) are getting to it late. It’s still really dumb.

  2. Well, the voters also get to grade him, and it’s basically Pass/Fail. In three years? We’re going to have insane inflation and a disaster in Afghanistan (I pray I am wrong). How’s he gonna pass?

The media is on the defensive awfully early. If Obama were truly an A class president, with only minor failures, he would not need this kind of advertisement. Everyone knows that. It’s a really tough job, and it’s no surprise someone like Obama can’t do it.

He promised a hell of a lot, and he’s just plain not living up to his promises.

  6. OMFingG!! He did not actually publish that pantsload of crap in a national news magazine!! (Oh, thats right its in Time.)

Even temper = losing it and refering to Palin as a pig at a campaign event. (And listen to the crowd reaction on that one. They knew exactly what he waas saying.)

Cool demeanor = Flipping Hillary off at a rally after she got under your skin.

Facility for managing personell = Van Jones, Geitner, any one of a half dozen others.

Boldness under pressure = Couldn’t find the spine to stand up to Iran at the UN Security Council, behaving so pusillanimously that the French President called you out for your cowardice. (‘Course the current French president has a spine, probably one of the reasons Barry doesn’t like him.)

Delegation and when to engage = Having White House staffers run an illegal effort to coordinate the production of personal propoganda by artists that receive government grants. (Actually this is a evidence of good delegation skills. Staffers take the fall and you get to continue on like nothing has happened. Barry gets one point for this.)

Not even the MSM we have in this country could have meant this article to be taken seriously.

    Have Blue (854a6e)

  7. I think that many members of the MSM have a funhouse mirror at home. It distorts things reflected in it.

The MSM think of the President as “like them.” And they are filled with self-love, so their attitude toward the POTUS makes sense.

But that article is so over the top, it cannot stand. I mean, if nothing else, the “…shrewd facility for managing personnel, unfailing instincts about when to delegate and when to engage…” is vomit worthy.

Look at the list of appointees he has put together. Picking them was somehow “shrewed”? Giving the Queen of England an iPod packed with your own speeches, and DVDs that could not played in the UK? Or how about that whole Olympic bid?

But no worries. Just like the plain girl/nerd boy dating the football quarterback/cheerleader, the MSM will excuse anything the Prez does, because they are so star-struck. Except all this comes from self-love and arrogance.

The “Time” article is amazing. Halperin needs read “Co-Dependent No More” or something.

  10. Gibbsy gets an A-, too. Good grief – I’ve never seen a more inept presidential spokesman, not even McClellan.

    radar (9b7db6)

  11. Eric, after Obama demanded Bush and Americans outright boycott the last Olympics, it’s pretty damn amazing he thought his presence would help Chicago at all. That took some stones to even attempt.

I think he gets an A in audacity. A minus in results. So A-.

    Dustin (bb61e3)

  12. Heh, it’s such a sacrifice and so beneath the Obama clan to travel on 4 huge jets to Europe amid “pomp and circumstance” just to beg in a self-aggrandizing manner for the Olympics. Nobody would kick them to the curb, would they?

    John Hitchcock (3fd153)

  13. Hey! He must be doing a great job. He just won the Nobel Peace Prize.

  14. Guys, guys, guys…..Pres. Obama is so great, he won the [object]for all he had done by his second wekk in office……….

    gahrie (9d1bb3)

  15. Read Hu Jia’s story. And consider that this brave soul lost to Barack Obama. The Nobel Peace Prize is not about promoting peace.

And consider that Obama has sworn to fight our war in Afghanistan. Sure, he’s not taking it too seriously, but he swore to fight the war. He’s bombing terrorists in Pakistan and hasn’t freed too many of the terrorists at GITMO (thank goodness).

But he’s fashionable. Like Yasser Arafat.

Barack Obama has apparently accomplished something after all. I’m amazed at this.

    Dustin (bb61e3)

  16. Adult content warning at that Xmas site? No, thanks.

    John Hitchcock (3fd153)

  17. Damn. “Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world’s attention”

    Nobel Peace Prize’s website.

“and given its people hope for a better future.”

First of all, it is insane to award this prize on the basis of celebrity. This prize ought to be about recognizing works that are poorly known. Also, no one seriously thinks Obama has made the world any safer or better. We don’t really think Russia or Iran are closer to abandoning nukes. Just America. A world without American power is safer? When has that been the case?

Regardless, this is about Obama demanding the USA be completely free of nuclear weapons. It’s unbelievably naive, and quite scary, but I fear this prize will move Obama to work very, very hard towards this goal. What’s amazing is that he’s being given an award for promising to do something… why not give him the award once he’s already done it? There are real heroes out there who have already done their heroism.

    Dustin (bb61e3)

  18. John, there’s nothing to see of any value at xmas’s blog. It’s some kind of google bomb for sex toys. Sorry, xmas.

    Dustin (bb61e3)

  19. Halperin’s entire series of posts is inane cheerleading — a totally unprofessional act of journalistic fellatio disguised as objectivity. Hmmm. Tilting at windmills again. Halperin wasn’t swallowing President Obama’s winning of the Nobel Peace Prize this morning very well on MSNBC’s ‘Morning Joe’. In fact, he was choked with ridicule.

Internationally Obama ired our allies on Iran, left ‘em laughing in Copenhagen, and seems to inspire a lot more curiosity than respect around the world. Then Oslo hands a sitting U.S. President the Nobel Peace Prize this morning. Somebody’s laughing… with a $1.5 million peace prize all the way to the bank.

    DCSCA (9d1bb3)

  20. DCSCA, I don’t think your argument is very persuasive. Many Obama cheerleaders know that the peace prize is a ridiculous overreach. It’s supposed to be a final award after a massive struggle. Mandela is the icon. Obama was nominated before he was prez for two bloody weeks. While trolls will use this to great effect, it’s obviously a total farce, and democrats who want a shred of credibility will have to laugh at this.

Now, how does this show Obama is respected? Oslo doesn’t respect American leadership. They are just fighting a political battle. They’ve already admitted that their goal is to “kick Bush”. This is not a sign that the USA has any diplomatic power. That stuff is measured in concrete accomplishments. Afghanistan. Iran. Russia. China. We are in a weaker position against all of them than we were under Bush. Bush was a better diplomat, which I admit is not saying much. You think Obama winning some cash (which he cannot keep, btw… he won this for his work as US President), mitigates the fact that he was embarrassed over the Olympics? Nope… Obama can’t get the smallest diplomatic result.

Can you name any result Obama can be proud of in diplomacy?

This is the ultimate insult to the real peace makers, many of whom are quite liberal.

    Dustin (bb61e3)

  21. Well, he did win the Nobel Peace Prize.

    That oughtta count for something.

    Dr. K (eca563)

  22. This just in:

    Obama wins Nobel Peace Prize

OSLO — President Obama on Friday won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize for “his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples,” the Norwegian Nobel Committee said.

    AP via Lucianne.

Well, that thing will be worthless from now on, won’t it?

    N. O'Brain (a4f63e)

  23. Dr K,

It’s a highly partisan award, and we all know it.

They said their prize is meant to “kick Bush”. Awarded it for global warming hysterics, in direct contravention of Nobel’s will. It’s for celebrity level democrats. That doesn’t count for “something.” “something” would be more like some kind of diplomatic result. Like Iran’s nuke program halted or Russia agreeing to sanctions.

How amusing this must be for the Dalai Lama, a true man of peace, whom Obama refused to meet with so that he could appease the armies that crushed the Dalai Lama’s people. WOW.

Even if the Next nobel peace prize goes to a real hero, it will mean nothing. This is just another great argument that Obama is exactly like Jimmy Carter, who is beloved be those who want America to be weakened, poorer, and less free. Americans will know that this award went to the tremendously unqualified.

JD you know that many Vietnam Vets have had emotional troubles. I am not one of them fortunately for me, but thousands of others have had such problems and your obvious attempt to smear me as a troubled vet is an insult to those others who have suffered as a result of war trauma. I do give you credit, you wear your hate proudly, unlike others who like to try to disguise their hate behind walls of rambling incoherent text and faux civility. Now that it is abundantly clear exactly what my point was, and is, I await your retraction. Why would I try to smear myself, you might ask yourself …

Still a war hero to me. Thanks for your services. We are eternally grateful.

    The Emperor (0c8c2c)

  62. So if we use VeV’s calibration about who is more worthy to listen to, Arch wins in a landslide. Isn’t that right, VeV? After all, who actually uses his service record of many decades ago as a moniker? No one else here has ever done that before, to the best of my recollection – except for this individual. I find that strange – and somewhat bizarre.

    Dmac (5ddc52)

  63. Given the inclusion of Pelosi, Republican Congressional leaders and Republican presidential candidates in an article that is purportedly about grading Obama’s administration, I am somewhat surprised that Halperin did not grade himself.

    rdz809 (c1222c)

  64. “journalistic fellatio”???

What – the good old term “bootlicking” wasn’t provocative enough? I’m in perfect agreement about Halperin’s sycophancy, but I wish we could keep our discussions about it at a little classier level.

(And I would have rather sent this note to Patterico privately, but I couldn’t find the email address. The profile link and the FUQ link seem to be broken. Sorry.)

  65. “a totally unprofessional act of journalistic fellatio disguised as objectivity.”

    Please! That’s Olbermann’s job.

BTW: I love that sentence and can’t wait to use it somewhere. Perhap’s in an accusation against my local leftist newspaper.

    The Emperor (0c8c2c)

  67. We should clear up a myth about Vietnam combat veterans being young conscripts, drug addicted, emotionally unbalanced, uneducated and over represented by racial minorities.

Two thirds of those who served in Vietnam were volunteers. The average age of those killed was 23.11. Fewer Vietnam veterans are addicted to drugs or alcohol than the general population and fewer, imprisoned. 79% of all veterans had a high school diploma. Nearly all USAF and USN officers were college graduates; Army and USMC officers had at least 2 years of college. 12.5% of those killed in action were black, a number proportional to their percentage of the population.

In 1985, I got a call from a researcher who asked me if I regretted my decision to volunteer for Vietnam. Like 91% of those surveyed, I did not. [The French Legionnaire’s theme song was Edith Paif’s, “Non, je ne Regrerre Rien” I regret nothing.]

The next question was would I do it again knowing the outcome. Along with 74% I replied in the affirmative.

The final question was, “Would you do anything differently?” I started to say I wouldn’t, but changed my mind.

“On the 28th of April, 1972, on our 7th pass on that SAM site,” I answered, “I would have turned left instead of right.”

  69. 67, JD, VEV is a jerk like Sen. Tom Harkin. Both are VEV’s who inflate their service to make themselves to be seen by others as real war heros when neither were.

    PCD (1d8b6d)

  70. No, but these stereotypes exist probably because of Hollywood and the MSM.

VeV wrote, “JD you know that many Vietnam Vets have had emotional troubles.”

  80. The Emperor, VEV is bashing Vietnam Veterans. These people are heros for fighting in a war for our nation.

VEV did not fightin Vietnam… he just bashes those who did. Our Veterans are not more likely to kill themselves, use drugs, or be homeless. That’s a vicious and disgusting lie. VEV was NEVER THERE and has no idea what he’s talking about.

All he can say is ‘HAHA BUSH DIDN’T GET THE PRIZE!!!’ Well, shit, sherlock… it’s the “Kick Bush” prize. The entire point is to be highly partisan. Iran has many peace heroes, and so did China, and the nobel prize has contravened the will of Alfred Nobel by transforming into a disgraceful institution of promoting a certain political point of view.

That’s as disgusting as VEV bashing the men who actually went and fought.
