Minnesota Beats Detroit in the 12th

The Twins beat the Tigers in the AL Central tiebreaker game:

“Alexi Casilla’s one-out single in the bottom of the 12th inning scored Carlos Gomez from second base and the Minnesota Twins beat Detroit 6-5 in the AL Central tiebreaker Tuesday night, completing a colossal collapse for the Tigers.

The Tigers became the first team in baseball history to blow a three-game lead with four games left. The Twins went 17-4 to pull even on the final weekend, then emerged with their fifth division title in eight years.”

It’s been said that sports is a metaphor for life. If so, the Tigers’ meltdown is the perfect metaphor for the Motor City this year.

  1. As a Twins fan, I have to say that that was a five-hour emotional roller coaster unlike any I’ve ever been on. I know we’re bound to get swept by the Yankees, but damn if that wasn’t a fun ride.

  2. Barn burner.

When Joe Mauer broke Zack Greinke Saturday, the Twinkies became a team of destiny.

  3. The Tigers wuz robbed! Bases loaded, batter’s uniform hit by a pitch. No call! Should have been at least 6-5 going to the Twins’ 12th. Robbery.

  4. I am a Tigers fan. Yes Inge was hit but Leyland was out managed. I have got to be honest and say the twins are fun to watch. Hope you trip up the chosen ones.

  5. Well,I’d say that the problem with the metaphor, DRJ, is that next year there will be a Tigers team in MLB. GM ? Not likely.

  6. Sensational game. I agree he was hit, should have been 6-5. The only way the Tigers collapse could have been more poetic was if it was the Cubs.

  7. You really know how to hurt a Cubs fan, JD. Don’t make me start with the Hoosier jokes.

  8. That was fun to watch.

As for Inge’s pants, if he were a man (he’s not), there wouldn’t be any pantsleg down there, just baseball stockings. Next time, I hope he gets hit on his freaking tattoed forearms and they don’t call it.

I’m rooting for the Twins against the Yankees, but I’m not optimistic.

  9. That counts as a regular season game, right? All updated player stats obtain.

  10. Dmac – I am not a Hoosier. I do live in Indiana, but I am, and always will be, an Illini.

  12. Regular season, yes. Porcello continued to make a case for rookie of the year. Gordon Beckham fans are not amused.

  14. Yes, football season is brutal.

  15. That’s a lot to go through for the privilege of being blown out by the Yankees–but give the Twins credit for sparing MLB the embarrassment of a playoff team that gave up more runs than it scored in the regular season (the Tigers scored 743 runs and gave up 745). The Tigers are exhibit A for why I’ll be against any further expansion of the playoffs in MLB–some seriously mediocre teams are already getting in or close to getting in every year without dragging more teams in.

  16. Everyone is simply fighting for the chance to lose to the Cardinals, get get the door slammed in their faces by Carpenter and Wainright, while Pujols and Holliday beat the cover off the ball.

  17. With the Vikings and now the Twins, it’s going to be intolerable to read Ed Morrisey.

  18. Tigers got jobbed. Too bad for Detroit, they could use some good news.

    Um, Yankees. Sorry haters.

  19. Spartans, Red Wings, now Tigers.

No emontional boost in bailout city.

  20. Kinda feel bad for people in Detroit. The Lions suck, the Tigers sucked, and the economy sucks. Hope they get some good news soon.
