NCAA Football, Week 5

Filed under: Sports — DRJ @ 5:00 pm

[Guest post by DRJ]

There was a wild finish in the Georgia-LSU game, with #4 LSU scoring the winning touchdown with only 46 seconds on the clock. So far, there is only one upset in the top 25 with Michigan State beating #22 Michigan 26-20. The remaining top 25 include #3 Alabama over Kentucky, #6 Virginia Tech winning against Duke, #10 Cincinnati over Miami of Ohio, #13 Iowa with the win over Arkansas State, and #15 Penn State beat Illinois.

We’re just minutes away from two of the biggest games of the day: #7 USC vs #24 Cal and #8 OU vs #17 Miami.

  1. LSU! LSU! LSU!

Just got home from finishing a great steak, and watching the last few minutes of the Tigers…

And, what do I get for dessert??? The lovely and talented and immortal DRJ spotlighting the Tigers!!!

Hope one day you get to come to Baton Rouge and enjoy the very best of a night game in Death Valley….and if SEE-B-S doesn’t screw it up next week and put it into the afternoon, it could be the upset of the year!!!!!

  2. Oh, and as a true college football fan, I don’t doubt for a minutes that the Tigers are not playing as well as a top-5 team is expected to play…

I do know their history under Les Miles is just to win….sometimes close, sometimes big, but always to be competitive….

NO non-conference losses in his career….4=0 in Bowl Games……1-1 in SEC championship games, with the loss in 2005 to Georgia coming after Katrina forced the Tigers to play 12 consecutive weeks….

    He’s just a good coach….maybe not great…but, good…and I hope Tiger fans don’t screw that up….

  3. Reff – playing just good enough to win, or up to the level of your competition is never a good thing.

I went to a high school game tonite in Louisville where there were 30,000+ in attendance. Very fun. That might not be a big high school crowd in TX, but it is ginormous in Kentucky.

  4. JD, first, I condemn you for your critical comments about the Tigers…

That said, you’re completely correct….I will state in defense that this has been LSU’s method of madness under Les Miles….play hard, win close….

Seems to work most of the time…last year was tough, with the QB Lee throwing 7 TD passes to the opponents before he got hurt in week 10….defense is weaker this year, but, it did keep them in the game for most of the night…

Lastly, I’d rather be playing just like we are and be 5-0, than be anything else….if they just keep working hard, good things may still keep happening….

  5. Miles relies on talent. Execution and discipline are not in his playbook. But, a win is a win.

What the hell has happened to Cal?

Big big big big play for the ‘Canes. It pains me to say that I like this Miami team. Harris is a cool customer.

  6. Indiana scores in the final seconds to make it final. Ohio State 33, Indiana 14.

  7. Texas A&M is getting smashed by Arkansas, but I saw a lot that I liked.

They have a young offensive line and a talented quarterback. Plus, the defense, although not so good tonight, shows promise.

I’m starting to think they may have a decent year in the Big 12. But, I’m really starting to believe they have a much brighter future.

Don’t let the score fool you, for a young team, they look pretty good.

Of course, that’s what Aggies say every year. Then, Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Baylor and Texas Tech demolish us.

Always the bridesmaid, but never the bride, as the saying goes.

  8. Cal is painful to watch. SC has a way to go to finish the season with only one loss. Barkley looks good for a freshman, though. There were a couple of cheap penalties called but the game was pretty clean. I’ve always liked Cal and feel for them. The Washington-Notre Dame game was fantastic this afternoon. I was glued to the TV.

  9. Ohio U (OU) vs Miami? Hope it’s Miami of Ohio.
oops – got my schools mixed up.

    Paul S (8ce79d)

  10. Ohio U wouldn’t stand a chance against Miami of Ohio. OU has at one time held the honor of being “party college, usa” and has been in the running for many years. Their players are too hung-over to play feetsball.

  11. Reff, there is a lot to be said for playing just well enough to win, especially this year when it seems that every team is going to have one or two bad weeks.

I was really disappointed in Cal. That did not look like the same team I saw play so well at Minnesota a couple of weeks back. So much for Jahvid Best being a Heisman candidate.

Damn Notre Dame for pulling out another one at the very end. As I said last week, they are playing like they actually want to keep Charlie Weis around. The ND-USC game in two weeks will be the most meaningful one played in probably twenty years (I’m not counting the year of the Bush Push because very few people expected ND to be in that game at the end).

Florida and LSU next week is going to be great.

  12. Texas Tech defeated hapless New Mexico today. Now if only they could beat a ranked opponent…

  13. My vote for the worst game Saturday would be the Kansas State vs. Iowa State game. (regional in my case) While a blocked extra point in the last minute led to a KSU victory, the game was very poorly played.

There’s little chance that either KSU or ISU will crack the top 25. Both stand to be doormats for all remaining games in their Big 12 schedule.
