NAMBLA Supporter Inspired Obama’s Safe Schools Czar

[Guest post by DRJ]

Following up on an earlier post about Obama’s new Safe Schools Czar Kevin Jennings, the Washington Examiner reports Jennings was inspired by Harry Hay, a gay rights pioneer who was a strong supporter of NAMBLA:

“Kevin Jennings, President Obama’s Assistant Deputy Secretary of the Office of Safe and Drug FreeSchools at the U.S. Department of Education, is in hot water this week for having failed to report that a 15-year-old sophomore student in his school had told him of having sex with an older man.

But failure to report what appeared to be a case of statuatory rape of a child may be the least of Jennings’ worries. Lori Roman of Regular Folks United points to statements by Jennings a decade or more ago when he praised Harry Hay of the North American Association for Man-Boy Love Association (NAMBLA), which promotes the legalization of sexual abuse of young boys by older men.

Roman provides damning details and links here. She also notes that Jennings wrote the forward “to a book called Queering Elementary Education. And another fellow you may have heard of wrote one of the endorsements on the book jacket—Bill Ayers.” Ayers, of course, is the Weather Underground bomber from the 1960s who is just an “acquaintance” of Obama.”

Roman’s link includes the transcript of a speech Jennings gave in 1997. Here is the portion concerning Harry Hay and NAMBLA, but read the entire thing:

One of the people that’s always inspired me is Harry Hay, who started the first ongoing gay rights groups in America. In 1948, he tried to get people to join the Mattachine Society [the first American homosexual “rights” group]. It took him two years to find one other person who would join. Well, [in] 1993, Harry Hay marched with a million people in Washington, who thought he had a good idea 40 years before. Everybody thought Harry Hay was crazy in 1948, and they knew something about him which he apparently did not—they were right, he was crazy. You are all crazy. We are all crazy. All of us who are thinking this way are crazy, because you know what? Sane people keep the world the same [sh*tty] old way it is now. It’s the people who think, ‘No, I can envision a day when straight people say, ‘So what if you’re promoting homosexuality?’ Or straight kids say, ‘Hey, why don’t you and your boyfriend come over before you go to the prom and try on your tuxes on at my house?’ That if we believe that can happen, we can make it happen. The only thing that will stop us is our lack of faith that we can make it happen. That is our mission from this day forward. To not lose our faith, to not lose our belief that the world can, indeed, be a different place. And think how much can change in one lifetime if in Harry Hay’s one very short life, he saw change from not even one person willing to join him to a million people willing to travel to Washington to join him. You can see the same changed happen in your lifetime if you believe you can.”

There’s more on Harry Hay here. In addition to being a long-time gay rights activist, Hay was known for his “persistent support of NAMBLA’s right to march in gay-pride parades.”

  3. Safe Schools Czar sounds like a stupid dirty socialist make-work program.

But I think from a dirty socialist p.o.v. he pisses all the right people off, this Kevin Jennings. There’s always something so icky about hearing wingnuts screeching about NAMBLA. Independent not a lot partisan middle America type people just do not want that conversation wafting over their dinner tables.

That would just be my input from a marketing perspective. Dirty socialists raping our little country and the Kevster is an issue?

    It’s kind of depressing.

  4. Not as depressing as putting your dogs in your bio though.

In his spare time, he plays left wing for the New York City Gay Hockey Association (www.nycgayhockey.org) and enjoys walks with his partner of 15 years, Jeff Davis, and their golden retriever, Amber, and their Bernese Mountain Dog, Ben.*

    Turtles it would be different.

  7. I’m trying to think of a pithy statement to tie in this tsar’s “fail[ure] to report that a 15-year-old sophomore student in his school had told him of having sex with an older man” with the Hollywood elite’s insistence on the decency and propriety of one Roman Polanski. Unfortunately, my meager wit is failing at this task.

“Since I was of legal consent at the time, the fifteen-minute conversation I had with Mr. Jennings twenty-one years ago is of nobody’s concern but his and mine. However, since the Republican noise machine is so concerned about my “well-being” and that of America’s students, they’ll be relieved to know that I was not “inducted” into homosexuality, assaulted, raped, or sold into sexual slavery.”

  9. bored again – Glad to see you think its okay for older men to pick up fifteen year old male strangers in bus station mens rooms in order to have sex with them.

I guess you and your ilk will now get leave Larry Craig alone.

  10. Thanks for clearing that up, bored again. I feel a whole lot better. Wouldn’t it have been sweet if this sixteen-year-old and his older lover could have double-dated with the late Gerry Studds and his seventeen-year-old Congressional Page boytoy? and his teenage babysitter? Or Michael Kennedy and his teenage babysitter? What a great state Massachusetts is — they could have used Barney Frank’s condo for their assignations and Barney would have fixed any parking tickets that came out of it.

    JVW (d1215a)

  11. Fox distorts facts in attempt to bitch-slap Obama? Who could have guessed!

Now, if Harry Hay were to work in the Obama Administration, that would be a potential problem, not the least because he is dead.

    Andrew J. Lazarus (7d46f9)

  12. The “and his teenage babysitter” line got accidentally repeated twice when I made an edit. It was meant for the Michael Kennedy line.

  13. Second and third order associations are just hunky dory for smearing Republicans … but Obama administration folks are – as is evidently statutory – immune from Democrat tactics.

    SPQR (26be8b)

  14. Sorry JVW – The late Gerry Studs doesn’t work for bored again’s comparison. Mr. Studs caused his boytoy to travel across state lines to DC. The age of consent in DC at the time means that Mr. Studs was guilty of rape, and transporting a minor across state lines in order to rape them.

    Have Blue (854a6e)

  15. Aw, Have Blue, the whole point of being important is that silly laws about age of consent and the like aren’t supposed to matter. Did Harvey Weinstein teach us nothing earlier this week?

  16. “Queering Elementary Education.” Amazon’s got only one left. The Amazon “Look Inside” feature does not include the KJ foreword. The table of contents shows that you CAN judge this book by its cover title. It’s sort of a strategy and tactics manual for injecting sexuality into the “Early Childhood Classroom.” Call me a bigot, but if I were a parent, I would not be happy having a fan of this book around my kid. Bizarre pseudo-scholarly horseshit.

  17. bored again – What do you think about Kevin’s fisting lessons? A keeper for the curriculum or not?

    daleyrocks (718861)

  18. @Andrew J. Lazarus

As a adult survivor of childhood molestation, it doesn’t matter that Harry Hay is dead. The problem is that Kevin Jennings was inspired by Harry Hay who was a pedophile (anyone who believes that child rape is okay, is a pedophile). Pedophiles are not people you look up to, but who are people who should be despised. Only moral bankruptcy would cause a person to be “inspired” by a pedophile, just a moral bankruptcy causes people to make excuses for Roman Polanski.

    Tanny O'Haley (83a3bb)

  19. The student was OF LEGAL AGE.

There is no state in which the age of consent is less than 16, exceptions being made only when both parties are juveniles.

Instead of Media Matters, you should cite some credible expert on this subject, like Whoopi Goldberg.

    Glen Wishard (02562c)

  20. In his spare time, he plays left wing for the New York City Gay Hockey Association

Tell me they don’t have a hell of a time trying to get anyone to play right wing in that league.

  21. Hey, if the dude is actually 16, it’s all good. Do you think he gave the same advice to chicks?

    daleyrocks (718861)

  22. The fact that Jennings could equate the idea of two boys going to prom together (okay by me) and at the same time support NAMBLA (child abuse) is sick and wrong.

    Patricia (c95a48)

  23. I’m not going to defend the morals of either Harry Hay or Roman Polanski. However, if movie director X says he was inspired by Polanski’s work as a director, I don’t think it’s justified to tax X with Polanski’s pedophiliac behavior. The original work in the field I studied in grad school was done by a German mathematician who was a Nazi.

In the Jennings incident, the charge of ‘pedophilia’ seems to be way, way off, and the charge of rape likewise.

Something tells me Fox News and Friends are looking for anything they can possibly find to hammer Obama with, whether it’s true or not.

    Andrew J. Lazarus (7d46f9)

  24. I’m not really scandalized by the Kevster either except for him being a stupid dirty socialist wanker. You get rid of him it’s not like the little president man doesn’t have scores more of em lined up around the block. We has a surfeit, which is many.

    happyfeet (6b707a)

  25. However, if movie director X says he was inspired by Polanski’s work as a director, I don’t think it’s justified to tax X with Polanski’s pedophiliac behavior.

True enough, but unless they add quickly “even though he was a horrible human being”, I’m going to treat this person with suspicion.

In the Jennings incident, the charge of ‘pedophilia’ seems to be way, way off, and the charge of rape likewise.

The student was 15, the other person was an adult.

Since there is nowhere that the age of 15 was considered “of legal age”, by definition it was statutory rape. Period. End of story.

    Scott Jacobs (d027b8)

  26. So, AJL, do you think that Mr Jennings acted appropriately, and would you want him to counsel your children?

    JD (b279d0)

  27. I don’t think pitching that kid into some dirty socialist child welfare hell was really necessarily what was in the kid’s best interests, and, doesn’t it seem like maybe the kid turned out reasonably ok? So maybe he made the right call. Fifteen should be the age of consent anyway. This kid for sure was very very consenty to where I don’t think there was any dissuading him.

    Bus. Station. Bathroom.

That’s pretty much the dictionary definition of bound and determined I think.

    GM Roper (85dcd7)

  32. um. Mark Foley is a pervert.

Kurlander person, I think in spite of the maturity and sagacity evinced at your blog with the hoochie’s tits on display and the hoochie will the ball-gag, you’re confuzzled between the difference between stigmatizing sex at 15, which is appropriate, and criminalizing it, which I think is the sign of a society what’s too morally enfeebled to handle it’s own affairs without the steady hand of government to guide it.

If a 15-year-old wants to get laid, he or she is going to get laid. Six ways to Sunday they’re going to get laid.

    happyfeet (6b707a)

  36. And Kevin Jennings is not a pederast. There’s no evidence of that whatsoever. That’s a flat-out lie.

    happyfeet (6b707a)

  37. “The original work in the field I studied in grad school was done by a German mathematician who was a Nazi.”

A mathematical proof has no moral component. The social sciences are primarily concerned with how human beings morally order themselves and their communities. See the difference?

I doubt you do, but just saying, for the benefit of those who do.

Kevin Jennings APPROVES of Harry Hay’s moral compass, which proves that he is not fit to have anything to do with the schools.

    Sophia (ef0aba)

  38. statements by Jennings a decade or more ago when he praised Harry Hay of the North American Association for Man-Boy Love Association (NAMBLA), which promotes the legalization of sexual abuse of young boys by older men.

This is astonishing! We’ve had no reason to doubt the quality and reliability of Obama’s discernment of the people he hangs out with, embraces, or appoints until now!

As for that tempest in the teapot regarding Obama and Jeremiah Wright last year? Obama said he had never heard — throughout almost 20 years as a congregant of Wright’s church — all the “goddamn America” rhetoric spewing forth from Wright’s lips.

Yes, everyone can believe our president. He’s such a noble, trustworthy, integrity-filled human being.

    Mark (411533)

  39. There is nothing to tie Kevin to support of NAMBLA.

No one in this dirty socialist America-hating administration is fit to have anything to do with the schools. The shallow marxist little president man and his angry angry woman are not fit to have anything to do with our government. I don’t get why you’re picking on Kevin Jennings. He’s in a harmless bullshit job designed mostly to later empower him as a “former official” in the Obama administration so he can get booked on dirty socialist NPR and get published and such. So y’all want this guy gone and some other dirty socialist fucknut similarly empowered? That would make two.

    Strategic brilliance.

  40. Now, if Harry Hay were to work in the Obama Administration, that would be a potential problem, not the least because he is dead.

    Comment by Andrew J. Lazarus

Andrew, I’m sure he donated to the campaign on-line and voted for him in Chicago, though. The point of all this is not to be horrified at this person, although the job he was given is a weird place to put him, but the associations of so many Obama intimates. He really seems to have dredged up the bottom of the left’s barrel.

On the issue of 15 year old boys and older men, I assume you were giving all those priests who had relationships with 15 year old boys a break, right ? The vast majority of the priest cases were with teenagers, not children, but I don’t seem to recall the left showing much “understanding.” In fact, it was (and still is) my belief that the gay rights outfits blurred the distinction so as to avoid a discussion of NAMBLA and its supporters. They pushed the pedophile theme even though only a couple of the priests were involved with children younger than Polanski’s victim. One of the priests was even an officer of NAMBLA and I don’t recall much sympathy for him, either.

Situational ethics they call it and it is the only kind still be taught in college, I”m afraid.

    Mike K (2cf494)

  41. There’s a huge huge difference between a creepy Catholic priest molesting a kid and a kid going to a bus station bathroom for the express purpose of hooking up.

It’s child molesty apples to precociously gay oranges.

    happyfeet (6b707a)

  42. Andrew J. Lazarus:

Kevin Jennings believes in overturning all sexual morality based on heterosexual norms. He admires Harry Hay. He approves of grown men buggering teenaged boys.

He’s a destructive maniac, and I don’t want him in my government. Got a problem with that?

    Sophia (ef0aba)

  43. The boy wasn’t 15. He wasn’t molested against his will. I don’t know what Sophia is trying to say by “overturning all sexual morality based on heterosexual norms”—compulsory homosexuality? I have a feeling, though, that it’s another variation on “Have you stopped beating your wife?”

    Andrew J. Lazarus (57fa30)

  44. AJL – Jennings has given conflicting accounts of the boys age, specifically stating he was 15 in one and implying he was older in another. Not acknowledging the conflicting accounts from Jennings or wilfully choosing to ignore his own statements that the boy was 15 is your own decision.

    daleyrocks (d057d3)

  45. AJL – Jennings admitted that he was wrong. Would you want him counseling your children?

    JD (d2f723)

  46. Can’t the Obama administration find enough politically correct lackeys who aren’t corrupt, predatory or communist? Or is that part of being politically correct?

    Brother Bradley J. Fikes, C.O.R. (0ea407)

  47. Brad, you answered your question. I’ll only add:

    Nuff said.

    John Hitchcock (3fd153)

  48. #43: it’s always illuminative to see what kinds of things AJL defends, and what things he attacks.

What a great spokesperson for the Left! Very soon, there will be a “stimulus package” from the DNC to keep people like AJL quiet. Personally, I love to see him shuck and jive to defend chid molesters (because no matter how he wriggles, this isn’t a gay issue; it’s a child molestation issue courtesy of the relative ages). Again, what a great spokesperson for the Left! AJL is certain “agile” defending anything that remotely has a “D” associated with it! Even if other people with “D”s after their name don’t want to see it defended!

Keep it up! The RNC will love it! And so will the voters in 2010 and 2012!

    Eric Blair (184ac1)

  49. So AJL is fighting tooth-and-nail for this site to maintain the “dumberer than a sack of Andrews” moniker for total idiots. Keep up the fight, AJL, and that moniker will never leave.

    John Hitchcock (3fd153)

  50. Truth in advertising: “Dumberer than a sack of Andrews” is a term used by commenters and not necessarily approved by the article authors.

    2. They are supporters of Democratic/progressive ideals.

    That’s pretty much it.

Except when there are points involved. But that’s another story.
