Second Graders Sing Praises to Obama

[Guest post by DRJ]

You’ve probably already seen this video of a Burlington, New Jersey, second grade class singing praises to Barack Obama: Click here for video.

Fox News reports the Commissioner of New Jersey’s Department of Education has ordered the superintendent to review this incident. However, Christopher Manno, identified in reports as the school superintendent, has already said taping the class was out of order but he did not comment on whether the lesson was approved:

“The recording and distribution of the class activity were unauthorized,” he wrote in a note to parents and the media.

Nevertheless, I hope the parents at this school and the citizens of Burlington get answers to these and other questions:

  • Why a schoolteacher or school administrators would permit political messages to be taught to second graders, and what are the guidelines for doing so?
  • Whether Charisse Carney-Nunes, an activist and author of the children’s book “I Am Barack Obama,” was present when this was taped and, if so, was she involved in this song and/or in presenting other material from her book?
  • Did this occur in February during Black History Month as the school apparently claims, or in June as part of a Father’s Day tribute to President Obama as Carney-Nunes said?
  • Has Carney-Nunes given other presentations about Obama at this or other schools?
  • The article notes tensions are high at the elementary school and it was temporarily placed on lockdown after the principal received death threats.

    1. A father’s day tribute? That would be too perfect. Of course, as others have pointed out, the “red, yellow, black or white” verses are eerily similar to

Black and yellow, red and white
They’re all precious in His sight
Jesus loves the little children of the world

I thought the Obama as supreme diety crap ended on election day?

    2. ‘“The recording and distribution of the class activity were unauthorized,” he wrote in a note to parents and the media.’

I’m sure there are all kinds of things going on in classrooms that the powers that be would prefer we not find out about.

    3. tim,

I doubt it was in June since the children are dressed in long pants and some are in long sleeves, plus I don’t know if they even have school in the summer in Burlington. But the fact she believes it was done in June causes me to wonder how many of these presentations Carney-Nunes has made.

    4. I’m not saying that the “death threats” didn’t happen, but they sure fit the Current Meme, don’t they?

      Eric Blair (0b61b2)

    5. Again, just imagine if a teacher did this for a Republican president. Seriously. We need to use the Rule of Reciprocity in matters political. Because it sure looks like a lot of folks on the Left are nuttier than a Payday Bar about the current POTUS….and yet they call the Right deranged.

At least people on the Right weren’t trying to equate Presidents to Jesus Christ with a song for second graders in school.

    8. This is sick and perverted. Those little kids were used like dirty socialist props and it’s on YouTube for all time. If that were my kid on that video there would be some drama. That’s sick.

As I noted at HA, I think it was on March 23rd. Nunes was in Burlington on March 23rd, which is just a short hop from Philly. (See the last line of the story.)

    13. This is seriously creepy. And what’s up with the school allowing someone to videotape minors? I understand they said it wasn’t authorized, but surely someone in the auditorium noticed that there was a videorecorder being operated.

      Rochf (ae9c58)

    14. More important, when did we approve of the singing of praise to a living man? We actually don’t even honor Washington or Lincoln that way!

      Patricia (c95a48)

    15. I could hardly believe the “red, yellow, black or white” quote was real… but it is. It starts around 0:25 of the video. And as tim maguire points out (in the very first comment, no less), the similarity to Jesus Loves the Little Children (which I learned years ago in Sunday School) was the very first thing I thought of, too.

The mentality that would write such a thing about a President, any President, is truly frightening.

      Robin Munn (9178df)

    16. As for the videotaping, what school is going to stop a proud parent videotaping their kid’s performance? It’s probably always against official rules, but seriously, who’s going to take Mom’s camcorder away from her when little Johnny is up on the stage mumbling his way through “Mary Had a Little Lamb”? The only difference here is in the content of what the kids were taught to perform.

I take it that you do not have children in school? Everybody is photographing and videotaping kids performing in school productions — parents, the school, the PTA.

      Guido from New Jersey (df76d4)

    18. Yeah, you’re right, but I don’t think this was a parent–I understood it was someone who set this up in the first place. REgardless, the whole idea is creepy and frightening at the same tinme.

    21. And most importantly…

      THOSE KIDS ARE HORRIBLE!!!!!
some people just shouldn’t sing, unless its the National Anthem at a baseball game…

and that “HMM HMM HMM” makes me long for the days of Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold…

    23. I really don’t care why they did this, and I don’t care when they did this.

I do care that they objected to taping, and I wonder how many OTHER school districts have done similar “Obama Appreciation” programs that didn’t get taped.

The principal needs to get fired.

      Kevin Murphy (805c5b)

    24. Um, what’s wrong with videotaping this?

We obviously need more scrutiny and documentation of what this school is doing to children, not less. I’m all for webcams in classrooms. Heck, most big schools have cameras all over the place, except in the classrooms. Why not just put the classes online? It would protect teachers from all kinds of problems, too. A camera is not the ideal, but if the kids are being brainwashed, I’d like to know.

      Dustin (0bdb72)

    25. For the life of me the Obama song and the Obama posters remind me of the Stalin era in the USSR. Will Democrats soon be singing the Obaminternationale?

      mhr (ec6d99)

    26. This is similar to the children singing last year during the campaign. If you try to play that video you see it has been blocked.

      Hope and change

      Mike K (2cf494)

    27. As I read the story, this was not taped by a parent or anyone who objected to the material being sung. This was posted to Youtube by Nunes herself as praise to Obama.
(Though it has probably been reposted as I think she would have taken it down as soon as the fecal matter contacted the rotary airflow impellor.)

    29. “Um, what’s wrong with videotaping this?”

How can the schools do a proper job of politically indoctrinating children if everyone can see what they’re doing?

You just know that racist, right wingers are going to object to the right and proper political deification of the New Messiah.

This is something that needs to be done in secret, so that redneck parents won’t be able to see that their children are being brainwashed, and object to it.

“The tension at B. 33. Some idiot woman just called in to Sean’s show stating that there was absolutely nothing wrong with this because it took place one time in February for President’s Day AND it was celebrating Black History month. He asked her what her opinion would have been had this occurred after 9/11 and during the Iraq War with schoolkids singing the praises of George W. Bush (and considering he helped liberated 25 million Iraqis). She got irate and whined that was not at all the same.

This is repugnant. We still have our work cut out for us, folks. The rivers of ignorance and stupidity wrong deep and wide in this country.

      Peg C. (48175e)

    34. I suspect any pushback at all would have been described as “death threats”. Still, I think the locals should be left to sort this out themselves and I was disappointed to note the school’s contact information supplied in various comment threads.

The song would sound better in the original German.

Oh, I’m sure the principal is being completely honest about this statement – and tell us, BO, to whom should we ascribe these heinous “death threats” to? You don’t suppose it could be another Dem party operative doing the dirty work here, just like in Denver during the Tea Party rally?

      Dmac (b905fa)

    39. I thought it was racist to call him Hussein. Why do the rules keep changing?

      JD (c48dbe)

    40. “I thought it was racist to call him Hussein.”

It’s o.k., if a black person calls him Hussein, or if small children (ten years or under) sing a song calling him Hussein, as long as the song was written by a black person and the song is appropriately worshipful.

In all other situations, it would be racist to refer to President Obama as “Hussein”, as well as disrespectful to the office of the presidency. In addition, racist remarks of this sort tend to incite violence.

      So, watch what you say.

“Why do the rules keep changing?”

The rules regarding racism are very complex, and change frequently for reasons that are beyond the abilities of ordinary right wingers to understand.

Luckily, I have left wing friends who can clarify matters.

Let me know if you have any questions regarding racism, and I’ll get the current rulings for you.

    65. I’d have the creeps even if a conservative teacher, in a conservative community, were having her students sing a paen to a Republican/rightwing president. But the fact all the players in this bit of socio-cultural weirdness undoubtedly are of the left — and since politics already is a religion to the left (eg, “we bow at the altar of global warming!” “Free healthcare and welfare are better than Christ, Buddha and Mohammed all rolled into one!”) — makes it even creepier and freakier.

    69. Another important issue for you folks, eh? Man, this President’s Day celebration with a song about the President indicating he’s for equal pay for equal work and post-racial is JUST way over the top.

Besides the hilarity of watching you guys get angry over silly stuff yet again (has anyone tracked down Scott Beauchamp for his “treason” yet?), the idea that you take issue with the words makes me giggle. I mean, I’m aware that the Dave Surls of the world are not for all people being equal or, probably, for equal pay for equal work, but outside of the toilet bowl that is the Right wing, getting health care, getting paid the same as the white dude in the next cubicle gets (and here, I think we can all remember how Mrs. Ledbetter was called a conniving loser, can’t we?), and getting along with other people is thought of as desirable.

Here, it’s a socialist plot to indoctrinate America’s youth!

Buck of kooks. Led around by the nose by Roger Ailes and so easily manipulated.

We should get the Mena Arkanasas investigators and Ken Starr on the case of this evil person who wrote a book and…[looks around conspiratorially for Griff Jenkins] has anyone seen will.I.am anywhere? I heard he was secretly leading the combined fourth graders of Oregon on a quest to sing Kumbaya only change the words to Obama-ya! THE HORROR.

And, and for those who like to play the moral equivalency game, check out Mayer v. Monroe Schools (7th Circuit), where a teacher lost her job because she admitted to her class that she honked in support of an anti-war rally. Legal issues aside (the case is about what a school can and can’t tell teacher what to say), the facts show an Indiana school canned a teacher, because she offended the politics of right wing parents. So, when the left wingers start firing right wing teachers for not toeing the “Obama line,” can y’all get back to me with your outrage?

      timb (449046)

    70. Nowhere in timb’s mass of words does he recognize that children were made to sing Obama’s praises using lyrics from a song about Jesus.

Deifying Obama doesn’t disturb timb. Quelle surprise!

    71. Commenter #70 has written a false straw man argument. Tales told without any proof of veracity do not convince anybody. Hmmmm…he who is without sin may throw the first stone. As for the group sing, it is wrong to pollute children’s minds this way. Shame on adults who do this kind of thing….

      Gene (4205f3)

    72. timb has one spin one that Mayer case. Predictably, the defense has another:

“School officials contend Mayer was fired for poor performance in her alternative learning classroom, which included students in grades 4 through 6. They say Mayer’s statements concerning peace were just a small part of the problem.

“Ms. Mayer’s speech on the war was not the reason for her ultimate termination,” the School District said. “Instead . . . the motivating factor for her termination was her poor classroom performance, the ongoing parental dissatisfaction and the allegations of harassment and threats toward students.”

They allege that Mayer was rude and demeaning to students and their grades suffered as a result. They said six students asked to be transferred from the class, including the daughter of the parents who protested Mayer’s peace discussion. And after being told not to talk about the impending war, Mayer did it again, the brief said.”

      JVW (d1215a)

    74. You’d think that libs would notice, even though conservatives have spent volumes praising the policies and politics of Ronald Reagan, that you’ll never find a song about him like the one about Obama. It’s just not done.

Besides that, whenever conservatives do discuss Reagan’s legacy there are always some voices of moderation, pointing out some of the things (expansion of government in some areas and of spending) that we didn’t like. When the libs are writing books and songs about the wonder of Obama, can you find the same kind of balance? Of course not. That would be racist!

    80. DRJ,
It could be so. The mullahs know they have little to lose. Obama won’t take military action against them, and has even told Israel not to do so. The worst they can reasonably expect are some modest inconveniences from sanctions. Oh, perhaps they won’t be invited to the next July 4 festivities. Horrors!

But I sure wish it could have hit blogs and made headlines the same exact week the Obama back to school speech controversy was raging on network TV. I think that way a lot of Americans would have had their eyes opened and would have seen the original whole back to school project and “lesson plans” to be not so innocent as they were painted.

    84. …and has even told Israel not to do so.

I think it’s safe to assume that Bibi and the Israelis as a whole could give a rat’s a– what Obama says at this point, Bradley. He’s basically told them to expect no help from us on any issue of importance to them, and even blames them for everything wrong with the Palestinian problem. I fear an Israeli strike at Iran is the only possible outcome to this crisis, since they’re all alone in defending themselves against probable annihilation. That’s what usually happens when you’re on better terms with your enemies compared with your putative allies.

      Dmac (b905fa)

    85. You know, Dmac, I keep thinking about the interviews with Sarah Palin and all the “she’s stupid” meme business.

Can you imagine a nice sit down with our shiny new POTUS, and some basic questions about the factual background of the history of the Middle East being thrown at him?

You know he would be a complete ignoramus on the subject. This is just “Palestinian…good” and “Israeli…..bad” sort of thing.

But it would be nice to force that admission. Despite all the mouthings about sophisticated nuance, I don’t think his mastery of geopolitics would impress.

I mean, other than the Troll Cheerleading Troupe here.

    86. I can hear Obama on TV saying to Iran, let us inspect your Nuclear facilities or I’ll wet my pants and let you deal with Michelle.

But that would be an actual consequence, and one can’t really envision Dear Leader actually appending an “or else” to his empty threats. It’s more like he will threaten them with yet another U.N. Security Council resolution if they fail to comply. It’s only because their version of Islam is so dour that the mullahs don’t laugh in Obama’s face.

    87. So Greg Gutfeld was saying the other night that these “kiddie songs” about Obama reminded him of the Stephen King scare-fest movie “Children of the Corn.”

No. They are “Children of the ACORN.”

      Right?

Hey, thanks for the kind words.

That post kinda reminded me of Jim Treacher’s tribute to Iowahawk (which can be seen in the blurbs section of Iowahawk’s blog)

      “I don’t LIKE you. I LOVE you. In a GAY way.”–Treacher

When I first saw that, I about died laughing.

Just in case someone hasn’t read Iowahawk before. He’s a total crackup.

    89. hey, Daley, I’m a bit late to the party, but could you maybe try reading a primary document, rather the bullshyt some right winger tells you is true.

The case is here and you’ll note, contrary your summation of a summation, the Court used Mayer’s facts to determine the outcome (since it was a summary judgment) and Mayer’s assertion, taken as fact by the Court, is that she was canned for politics.

So, add all the fun allegations you would like about “her was mean” and all and note none of them could be considered by the Seventh Circuit. The issue before the Court was could the school district limit her speech and fire her and Judge Easterbrook (reliable conservative judge) said they can.

Could you learn to find the right source? I guess, we can add “law” and “research” to the various categories you know nothing about. Long list by the way.

I can’t imagine having to have everything I know spoon-fed to me by a bunch of ideologues…

From the first page of the first hit on google, for God’s sake:

The district court granted summary judgment to the defendants, so we must accept Mayer’s version of events — which is that she answered a pupil’s question about whether she participated in political demonstrations by saying that, when she passed a demonstration against this nation’s military operations in Iraq and saw a placard saying “Honk for Peace”, she honked her car’s horn to show support for the demonstrators. Some parents complained [emphasis added and editorial aside: they complained about honking! What tools], and the school’s principal told all teachers not to take sides in any political controversy. Mayer believes that this incident led the school system to dismiss her; we must assume that this is so.

      timb (449046)

    90. timb, an appellant decision of a summary judgment for defendants must assume all factual allegations in favor of plaintiff if there is any evidence. That’s why your claim in #70 that what Mayer alleged was in fact true is a ridiculous one.

One that shows you are the ignorant one.

      SPQR (26be8b)

    91. timb – Since SPQR has already pointed out that you are a dumb ass, I’ll refrain from piling on. The case to which you refer was decided at the original and appellate levels in favor of the School district. The article which I linked at Sweetness and Light excerpts from the Wisconsin State Journal, which itself drew from defense briefs in the trial to describe the posture of the defense concerning Ms. Mayer. Had you taken a moment to look rather than reacting with your typical acne ridden teenage angst you might have been able to discern that fact. Study hard, I think you’re going to have a tough time with bar the way you’re going.
