L.A. Times Buries (And Hides) Worst Facts of ACORN Scandal

Filed under: Dog Trainer — Patterico @ 9:04 pm

Well, well. Just look at how the L.A. Times is characterizing the myriad revelations of rampant criminal conduct by ACORN. You guessed it: it’s portrayed as a conservative thing:

Trying to dodge a building conservative firestorm, the House and Senate made clear Thursday that the community-based nonprofit organization ACORN was persona non grata on Capitol Hill.

. . . .

Congress’ actions were the strongest statement yet that the advocacy group, which conservatives accused of voter fraud in the 2008 presidential election, has become politically radioactive for Democrats.

Gee, why are those damn conservatives so upset? It takes until paragraph five to get this much out of Times editors:

Video made public earlier this month that featured ACORN workers giving advice on how to evade the law is the latest subject of conservative criticism.

Oh, well, if it’s just conservative criticism, then it must be bogus.

By the way, why isn’t this the headline? “ACORN workers caught on tape giving advice on how to evade the law”? Why is that not in the lede? And it takes until the paragraph seventeen to give some of the lurid details:

The most serious blow to ACORN’s reputation, however, may have come this month when video surfaced showing two employees in the group’s Baltimore office advising two actors who were posing as a prostitute and pimp on tax evasion and fraud. The duo are conservative filmmakers who have targeted ACORN offices nationwide.

Oh, well, if they’re conservative filmmakers, then it must be bogus.

So: mentioning that illegal activity is involved comes in paragraph five, and the revelation that a pimp is involved comes in paragraph seventeen. And which paragraph tells Times readers that the illegal actions that ACORN workers eagerly worked to cover up include trafficking in child prostitutes aged 13 to 15? For that little tidbit, you have to read all the way down to paragraph fuck you L.A. Times readers because you don’t even need to know that part at all.

Can we agree that this constitutes hiding the worst of it?

So remember: opposing pimping out underaged prostitutes is a conservative thing.

So says the L.A. Times.

UPDATE: The newspaper has replaced the original version of the story with a slightly reworded version at the same Web address. I had a feeling they might do this, so I saved the original version here. The new version is not much different; the first mention of ACORN’s illegal activity comes at paragraph four instead of five, the mention of prostitution and pimping comes at paragraph fifteen instead of seventeen, and the mention of underage prostitutes is still located at paragraph nowhere.

  1. C’mon. They are all about Teh Narrative. And they don’t want their guy to look bad, even by ACORNish reflection!

    Eric Blair (5290b4)

  2. If they are conservatives, that means they are racists. Did the LA Times helpfully point that out?

    daleyrocks (718861)

  3. “Trying to dodge a building conservative firestorm, the House and Senate made clear Thursday that the community-based nonprofit organization ACORN was persona non grata on Capitol Hill.”–LAT, an alleged newspaper

You mean that the concern of liberal legislators is not with the (possible) criminal activities of ACORN, and that they’re only acting in order to dodge Conservative criticism?

Well, that’s probably true, actually. I doubt if too many liberals have any moral objections to defrauding the government (I mean that’s kind of what libby wibbies do for a living), or to child prostitution rings.

    Dave Surls (19c23e)

  4. “If they are conservatives, that means they are racists.”

    Well, duh!

    Dave Surls (19c23e)

  5. Actually, that child porn thing is OK with the lefties. Even hot milky loads seem to be part of the Obama team’s public persona. What is really, really not OK is that religion stuff. You know, like Bibles and stuff.

  6. the Austin American Statesmen had a blog entry explaining that this just isn’t important.Link to their blog It’s political, you see. Doesn’t affect us locally. Of ‘scant interest’.

Since Austin isn’t in the USA? the US president worked for ACORN and hired them for work. And they had huge contracts that affect all of us. But it’s political. What’s that mean?

Of course, it means that the Statesmen is a group of committed partisan democrats and craft their paper as a partisan tool, not a news source.

the editor helpfully explains that you have to watch Fox News to be informed of this story. He’s wrong… the internet was a better source than FNC, but he’s right that his paper is not the place to go for scrutiny of our ACORN president’s friends.

The guy says there’s no suggestion there’s a national scandal. But there is such a suggestion. biggovernment.com cited their manuals to indicate exactly that, and the number of cities makes clear that this is a nationwide issue. You get lies, instead of truth, from this editor. He says “we see no evidence of any current ACORN-Obama link” A: so what… still a big deal. B: What about Cheney and Halliburton? Obama was tell ACORN he needed their help setting his agenda merely weeks ago!

he goes on and on about how bad it would be to let Fox News set their agenda. Why? They scooped you, but people want to know about this story! Who cares that Fox is the source? Do they have any idea where that attitude got CNN?

This jerk should be sending reporters out to find out more information, not waiting for everyone else to prove to him there’s a story, just so he can recap it. They REFUSE to dig up information. They are no journalists.

  7. On what planet is Baltimore the most serious blow? Between that tape surfacing and today’s article, we’ve seen one trash talking bitch falsely claim to have murdered her husband (and also claimed, either falsely or truthfully, to have run a bordello of her own IIRC) and another individual from San Diego offer tips on his connections in TJ to help them smuggle their underaged sex slaves from El Salvador across the border. Both are far worse than than the Baltimore tape, IMO, and both are from the L.A. friggin’ Times’s own friggin’ state.

    Xrlq (62cad4)

  8. XRLQ, that’s a good point. Why cover up the important stuff? They just want to be able to point back and say they covered this. They don’t want to actually cover it.

    Juan (bd4b30)

  9. How much advertising does dirty socialist General Motors buy in the Los Angeles Times to advertise its crappy dirty socialist government clunkers you think?

    happyfeet (6b707a)

  10. This is the richest part of the article:

In California, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger called on Atty. Gen. Jerry Brown to investigate ACORN’s activities in the state after videos surfaced allegedly showing ACORN employees in San Diego and San Bernardino encouraging possibly illegal activity.

    Brother Bradley J. Fikes, C.O.R. (0ea407)

  11. Are democrats so hard due to sex with the ugly women in the party they are all supporting the sex slavery of teenage girls, some like Frank and Webb want teenage boys. Must be so since 86 congress critters voted to fund the smuggling and sex slavery of 13-15 year old girls. Never mind the LASlimes, they will go down with the democrats. No one with an IQ over freezing temp (F) believes one word any of them say. Dimmy Carter has a big smile on his face, he is no longer the dumbest/sleaziest/anti-american president in history.

    Scrapiron (4e0dda)

  12. Great read Patterico. Let us know if they ever tell you why they hide the worst part from their readers. Their explanation will be comedy gold, of this I certain.

    tyree (353f22)

  13. Scrapiron, I didn’t comment on the 75 nay votes in the House on the other article, but I will here. I would’ve voted nay. I won’t trade socializing one thing for de-socializing another. That’s just how I am. The poison pill in this bill was the nationalization of yet another thing that had best remain privatized. I could not accept that.

But, I want all ACORN/COI/whatever other acronyms defrocked, defunded, relieved of their possessions (including paperclips and real estate). I also want the heirarchy to serve gazillion-year sentences in that northern Iraq US military prison camp.

    John Hitchcock (3fd153)

  14. I just wrote a scathing letter to the LAT. IMO, they are willfully giving cover to people who didn’t even bat an eye at the plans to sexually exploit young girls, therefore that makes them complicit at some level.

It also reveals them to be sick people if they believe the worst blow to ACORN is that they advised people on tax evasion and fraud yet not one mention of their willingness to support underage prostitution. While ACORN members are utterly untrustworthy and amoral, so too are the LAT editors who approved this story and the author who wrote it.

    Dana (863a65)

  15. You guessed it: it’s portrayed as a conservative thing:

I’d like to give them credit for focusing on conservatives as a good thing, as an example that when people on the right are in charge of things or snooping around, corruption and wack-job behavior is less likely to flourish. But, of course, we’re dealing with “leftys” at the LA Times. So the idea that such people will highlight “conservatives” in a positive light does stretch plausibility.

Then again, a lot of these same “leftys,” including in the media, often avoid describing themselves as liberal, or certainly leftwing, and favor euphemisms like “progressive.” So deepdown even they must have a vague sense their liberalism is both embarrassing and foolish.

(BTW, I don’t know the politics of the writer for Time magazine who did the cover story on Glenn Beck, but if that writer leans to the left — which is very likely — I do give him credit for penning a piece that struck me as pretty fair and even tempered.)

    Mark (411533)

  16. Dang, all this bovine byproduct has my head swimming with highly tasteless quips I’ve heard, and none of them are fit for company, mixed, polite, impolite or whatever else. Darn you, Dogtrainer! Darn you for fitting the voice of the depraved bovine byproduct humanoids who told the quips that you drew from my dormant memory and placed into my active memory!

    John Hitchcock (3fd153)

  17. Ah – so predictable. Remember that article about 9/11 – and the great sentences about how it would be have great if we did NOT indulge in steriotypes and violence afterward. I read that and said “Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa The F***?” Yeah – it was so CRAZY to draw an inference from the FACT that the suicide flight terrorists were ALL the same group – ALL the same religion: who likely killed the flight crews in cold blood before setting in motion their killing of thousands of others who had the TEMERITY to merely go to work that day. Wow – what a bunch of racist haters – for the record, per the LAT – that would be us, not them.

But hey, the LAT nearly ALWAYS gets it wrong – if the LAT is for you, then you are likely wrong. Doubt it? Whether left or right, the LAT will defend the indefensible – no, not those suffering injustice, just the criminally stupid. See link for LAT supporting Mayor Shaw in the 1930’s (a mayor so crooked even Chicago wondered why we put up with him.) ….http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/thedailymirror/2008/09/times-opposes-r.html

    Californio (340867)

  18. I love that this sort of thing is a “conservative” issue. Therefore, using a little basic Trig and Geometric theorems, vis a vis “if a, then b”, one would have to assume that the liberal thing is to give away vouchers for this kind of stuff. Hold classes and seminars, give tax credits for tweener brothels.

    Oh, wait…

    Steve B (5eacf6)

  19. Daily Kos turns on the slime machine against the journalists who exposed ACORN.

    Brother Bradley J. Fikes, C.O.R. (0ea407)

  20. Bradley, that article is hysterical! The author is clearly in lockstep to Purity of Essence Progressivism…and yet attacks O’Keefe for…wait for it…having strong political convictions.

My favorite parts in the “diary” were the one when the silly author criticized O’Keefe for being pompous…in an arrogant tone.

And he finishes up with a call to petition to support ACORN.

    SUPPORT ACORN?

Wow. I’ll take “Affirmative Action Bake Sales” over people who want to support organizations that have employees who want to aid and abet the importation of illegal immigrant sex slaves.

I think that “diary” from Kos needs to be spread far and wide, Bradley. I have an idea: send it to Jon Stewart.

After Stewart’s—liberal bastion that he is—evisceration of ACORN, he might find humor in this little twit.

    Eric Blair (5290b4)

  21. Bro Bradley, thanks for that link!

It’s hilarious! I was hoping for something really ugly, but it’s all just normal stuff. He disagreed with Israeli student groups getting less money than Islamic ones, held an AA bake sale, and wrote for a paper that used the word ‘truth’ several times.

the Kos diarist demands we “kick his thuggish ass”. without a hint of irony!

They apparently went to college together, and this guy was the one who decided to give the Jews less money because of his ‘formula’. O’Keefe has done more than win a student gov spot, he’s changed the world for the better and probably reduced the number of kids being raped and other criminal acts ACORN apparently frequently helped with.

God bless O’Keefe for the attacks he will suffer from. I don’t know if these benign accusations are true, but I am sure there will be many to come that are untrue and are quite harsh.

    Juan (bd4b30)

  22. The comments really get to the point. Someone admonishes the violence request, and when it’s called a figurative kick, someone offers to hold their figurative coat. That’s not cute or funny. If I promised to kick someone’s ass on here, I’d probably be banned.

they suggest claiming he said the ‘n-word’, and repeatedly suggest the ACORN workers were paid to act. Anastasia says: “If they can kill the messenger and distract from the accusations, so can we” This is called ‘Dan Rather’ing. None of these people consider the implications of letting children be violently sexually assaulted as sex slaves. None of these people believe in human rights or justice. It’s all about how Obama = ACORN, and so O’Keefe is somehow their enemy for telling us the truth.

Bradley, you’ve done a real service. I hope blogs pick this up.

    Juan (bd4b30)

  23. Shameless plug to my article on adj Dana’s site.

    10. Liberals across the blogosphere focus on everything but ACORN’s attempted collusion in violating child abuse, prostitution, tax, immigration, income verification laws.

    John Hitchcock (3fd153)

  24. Juan, thanks! I certainly hope blogs trumpet this. I’ve also saved screen shots in case this inconvenient truthtelling about DK plans gets flushed down the memory hole by someone more intelligent.

Amusingly, I found the link on Twitter from someone who appears to be a Kossack.

    Brother Bradley J. Fikes, C.O.R. (0ea407)

  25. From Bradley’s link – destroy the hold young conservatives have on well-meaning organizations like ACORN.

Batshit crazy and spittle flecked. If the videos had shown underage teen prostitutes tortured by the ACORN staff the freaks at Kos would still be defending the narrative by attacking the videographer.

Calling these things mindless robots is an insult to mindless robots.

    Apogee (e2dc9b)

  26. Bradley,

That’s a fun link, and the funniest thing to me is that I doubt O’Keefe would apologize for — and he might even be proud of — the things they find so offensive.

    DRJ (a51a0e)

  27. “it’s portrayed as a conservative thing”

Strangely enough the article doesn’t use the perjorative term “liberal” to describe ACORN.

I count seven uses of “conservative”…zero uses of “liberal” in that article.

    Go figure.

Pelosi Says Anti-Obama Rhetoric Sounds Familiar
    By Paul Kane
    Washington Post Staff Writer
    Friday, September 18, 2009

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Thursday said she worries that the protests of President Obama’s health-care legislation may be of a similar nature to anti-gay rhetoric in the late 1970s in San Francisco, which culminated in the assassinations of two of her home town’s political leaders…

    Brother Bradley J. Fikes, C.O.R. (0ea407)

  30. Bro Fikes, re Pelosi: I read excerpts of that article and I didn’t know whether to laugh or kick the jpg of Pelosi. I chose to seethe instead.

    John Hitchcock (3fd153)

  31. Bro Fikes, re Pelosi: I read excerpts of that article and I didn’t know whether to laugh or kick the jpg of Pelosi. I chose to seethe instead.

  32. (I blame my terrible internet connection for the daily double.)

    John Hitchcock (3fd153)

  33. I wouldn’t be as bothered by KOS-type of people if they at least considered themselves scroungy, flaky, half-assed, selfish, unkind, uncaring, inhumane people. But they don’t. They instead see their motives and philosophy as emanating from a reservoir of sophisticated, smart, noble big-heartedness and lovely populism.

“We’re for the underdog, for society’s sad sacks who need our attention and tender-loving care!”, they declare to themselves and others.

Never mind that their idea of the underdog — or an authentic underdog situation — is so screwed up and distorted, they wouldn’t know an underdog (a true, legitimate, deserving one) if it bit them on the ass.

    Mark (411533)

  34. If I were a dog, I wouldn’t bite a KOS-lover. I might get rabies.

    John Hitchcock (3fd153)

  35. #21, Juan…do you want to bet that this “diarist” had a much unhappier time than O’Keefe in college? I sense a certain acidity of the fruit of the vine, don’t you?

The teeth grinding jealousy and lack of humor shine like a beacon.

I know a fellow who went to college with Jonah Goldberg, and you should hear this guy snarl about how much he hated Goldberg. All I know is that the fellow looks sour all the time. And Mr. Goldberg? He smiles a lot. And managed to make some serious change from a book of his.

We have seen it here, come to think of it. There are posters here who don’t know Goldberg, and yet go on and on about how awful he is.

    Sour grapes….

    Eric Blair (5290b4)

  36. Sour grapes make a great dry whine.

    John Hitchcock (3fd153)

  37. Eric, that really was the dominant emotion I got from the Kos blog. A pathetic attempt to hurt someone who dared to accomplish something this resentful liberal only dreams he could accomplish. He proudly waves his ‘authority’ at being the former treasurer at a pretty good school’s student government years ago as though it matters. This O’Keefe made it known that he didn’t like this treasurer’s formulas, probably one of thousands of examples of O’Keefe standing up for what he believes in, and I’m sure that treasurer didn’t appreciate anyone daring to doubt his magical equality. After all, he’s a liberal, and therefore better. Or at least bitter.

O’Keefe makes it look easy, and I certainly feel a twinge of jealousy that I’m not bold or clever enough to take down corrupt billion dollar enterprises. I’m impressed that the diarist didn’t make up anything damaging. I wouldn’t want to screw with O’Keefe either. DRJ’s right… this is petty stuff that most conservatives would be proud of.

    Juan (bd4b30)

  38. Juan – After all, he’s a liberal, and therefore better.

Sort of like a ‘master race’, but with greater concern. That’s how they can read other people’s minds:

Also filled with a lot of dog-whistle code words. “Individual achievement” and “tradition” – sounds like conservative code for rampant capitalism and “Get back in the kitchen!” mindsets. But I digress.

Dog-whistle! Code words! Get it? Only some can hear it. The enlightened ones. The fundamental attraction to the ‘identification’ of “code-words” is that the exercise allows the accuser to assign meaning to other’s phrases by changing the actual communication to serve the accusation.

    Apogee (e2dc9b)

  39. I didn’t go to the KOS site because the insanity of suchlike sites only serves to enrage me. But, heck, I’ve been telling artsy Dana to stay in the kitchen for a while now. Seems my parody very neatly fits into their psychosis. Who’d’a thunkit?

    John Hitchcock (3fd153)

  40. My favorite part was the bit about how if O’Keefe and Giles were a government, the videos would have constituted entrapment. That’s like saying if your aunt had balls, she’d be your … oh, I don’t know … pet elephant?

    Xrlq (62cad4)

  41. Like Jon Stewart said, they got scooped by two kids out of High School Musical with a video camera and their grandmother’s fake chinchilla coat. Bury the story? They wish they could cremate it.

    nk (df76d4)

  42. Hard to believe, after over 40 posts on this blog, not a single supporter of LAT. Perhaps there’s hope yet for this country.

    Corwin (ea9428)

  43. I have to admit, I’ve never read Patterico quite so pissed about any fishwrap story, even an LATimes one.

    ‘Tis a lovely thing.

    More cowbell!

    RickZ (c06fbc)

  44. Fold faster, please, LATimes.

    Techie (482700)

  45. Of course they are jealous of these kids. Liberalism is all about jealousy. They are Toomey, these kids are Rourke.

FWIW, where is NOW to condemn APORN? Hello?

    HeavenSent (01a566)

  46. That Kos diary was hilarious. I wonder if any of them realize how foolish their colleagues sound ? The list of terrible things O’Keefe had done sounds like a boy scout’s merit badge record. Maybe that’s why they hate scouts.

    Mike K (2cf494)

  47. …. and wait till the Voter Fraud things gets documented.

ACORN represents exactly what is wrong with “alleged” Non-Profits in this country.

I hope the next POTUS aggressively goes after the Non-Prof loopholes which allow this after birth to continue.

    HeavenSent (01a566)

  48. It isn’t just the LA Times, the Liberal echo chamber media that is sick, but the Liberals on the net who condone, excuse, cover up for, and enable the Democrat party and its operatives like ACORN to act like this.

I can’t believe that you have to corner Liberals, (are you listening imdb?) both rhetorically and physically to even shame them into a modicum of decency.

    PCD (02f8c1)

  49. Oh, question, where are the wise Latinas condemning ACORN for being willing to enable, aid, and cover up the importation of underage Hispanic females to be enslaved into prostitution?

    PCD (02f8c1)

  50. Yes ACORN has had some problems and scandals and wrong doing but the real problem with ACORN for Conservatives is that it was helping minorities register to vote.
We know how conservatives feel about non white voting as we saw in 2000 in Florida and elsewhere when they suppressed the vote. The GOP is the party of old angry white men and minorities pose a threat to that as does a black President.

    VietnamEraVet (9f20cf)

  51. The Democrats are pretty angry too; go check out the Daily Kos. The analysis of Acorn entrapment in the Kos is really funny.

    Alta Bob (cbd109)

  52. 25, apogee, robots have the 3 laws (I. Asimov) to prevent them from harming humans. ACORN and their supporters will intentionally harm humans.

    PCD (02f8c1)

  53. VEV, You are a lying, soulless idiot. Why do you support bringing in underaged girls to be enslaved as prostitutes? Are you racist against Latinas? Do you think the sex trade isn’t an abomination? Do you think that no matter what evil Democrats participate in that they are still better than any traditional values American?

    PCD (02f8c1)

  54. VeV – Take your meds.

NOW, Feministe, Pandagon, etal remain silent about ACORN aiding the illegal underage sex slave trade.

    JD (5f9cc7)

  55. Then again, a lot of these same “leftys,” including in the media, often avoid describing themselves as liberal, or certainly leftwing, and favor euphemisms like “progressive.” So deepdown even they must have a vague sense their liberalism is both embarrassing and foolish.

Chris Morton once wrote that liberals believe that the U.S. might be executing too many people, while progressives are certain that Stalin did not execute enough people.

    Michael Ejercito (833607)

Strawmen tremble with fear when this guy passes by.

    Dave Surls (368fed)

  62. I guess I typed too soon. A special ‘thanks’ to #50. You win the prize.

ACORN registered 1.3 million. That is a great feat. uh, except that around 400,000 of those registrations were either duplicates, frauds or were missing information. Other than that – great job ACORN.

    Corwin (ea9428)

  63. Yes ACORN has had some problems

Funniest line of the day – I guess promoting child prostitution is OK with our resident nutbag.

    PCD (02f8c1)

  65. So remember: opposing pimping out underaged prostitutes is a conservative thing.

I had an idiot at my blog argue the following:

This investigation is akin to determining what kid at the fast food joint spits in your hamburger. Yes, a few do it, but they represent a very small percentage of burger flippers.

Maybe I’m being unkind to idiots.

    Mark (b0ad4e)

  66. Yes, you are being unkind to idiots, Mark. Idiots don’t know any better. What’s the ACORN defenders’ excuse?

    Brother Bradley J. Fikes, C.O.R. (e1d41d)

  67. Mark, that’s what’s so annoying about my local paper… they are acting like this is not a big deal.. just little hijinks. Somehow, they are assuming this is something you would find in only a couple of Acorn offices, when the evidence demonstrates it’s a rampant problem. These kids didn’t have much resources, and they didn’t really do the best job acting. The Acorn offices clearly are accustomed to crime.

I have no doubt that some kid is being raped today, thanks in part to ACORN and Barack Obama. That’s a serious charge, and I understand why the democrat newspapers would want to bury that with a smirk. But the voters really don’t go for this crap.

    Juan (bd4b30)

  68. Fortunately, most people nowadays get their news from John Stewart and Jay Leno.

    John Costello (148507)

  69. The sad truth is that Conservatives really are the only ones upset. I’ve been reading Liberal boards and they all defend this stuff over at ACORN, each blaming a hodgepodge of Bush, Halliburton, Cheney, Conservatives, Beck, Limbaugh, Palin – but never criticizing ACORN or it’s members’ actions in 5 videos – nor do they mention or possibly even realize that Democrats are responsible for pulling the funding.
And where were the Republicans all these years while ACORN was pulling this crap? Sitting on their hands like they always do.

    Uncle Dan (e4735c)

  70. You’re all racists. Jimmy Carter told me so.

    Uncle Dan (e4735c)

  71. Check it out: The Other McCain claims to have pictures of Hannah Giles in a bikini. While you’re at it, there’s also a rumor of a Hannah Giles sex video.

    Fritz (d1950e)

  72. Now that you guys have pretty much pulverized the ACORN — sure wish you’d done it before they destroyed the world economy by forcing Wall Street to come up with derivatives to ensure blacks get McMansions, and you know the rest — why don’t you do something more positive now? Like maybe start a legal defense fund or something for Oily Taintz.
She’s doing some of the real spade work and could use your help.

    Larry Reilly (45c8f2)

  73. Mawy Reilly joins the ranks of the under-medicated.

    JD (c4445a)

  74. Grow up, Larry. Juveniles like you are why we currently have the most corrupt Democratic Congress in some time, and the most incompetent presidential administration since Jimmy Carter.

    SPQR (26be8b)

  75. Larry, I know some people think this is some kind of contest, but you and I both win when corruption is exposed.
