ObamaCare morons add insult to injury

Filed under: General — Karl @ 2:45 pm

[Posted by Karl]

At the moment, the blogosphere is abuzz with the story of the ObamaCare supporter who bit off the finger of 65-year-old William Rice, a critic counter-protesting a MoveOn rally.

MoveOn had the good sense to call the violence regrettable, but some lefty bloggers could not help themselves.  Virtually all of them covering the incident rely on the account of a MoveOn supporter who claimed that Rice provoked the confrontation.  Mary Katharine Ham has the other side of the story, which suggests the attacker crossed over to confront the counter-protesters, possibly committing an assault against Rice before Rice threw a punch.  Regardless, none of the cutesy lefty bloggers wants to consider that biting off a man’s finger is mayhem — a felony far more serious than simple battery.

MKH also notes that TPM’s Josh Marshall and Air America both went with the angle that Rice was treated under Medicare (though the pinky was apparently unable to be reattached).   And the commenters at various lefty blogs complain of hypocrisy, completely oblivious to the idea that seniors oppose ObamaCare because (1) it is going to be partially financed by cuts in Medicare; and (2) putting millions of more people in the system in a short period of time will likely interfere with seniors’ access to the system. (Not that this reaction is surprising; some on the left were equally fixated on the irrelevant question of whether Kenneth Gladney was insured after lefty thugs beat him outside a town hall in St. Louis, incorrectly claiming he was uninsured.)

Vicious, classless and stupid is no way to go through life, lefties.  And it’s certainly no way to build support for ObamaCare.

  1. The left is starting to get really crazy about all this. Witness Wash Monthly today.

    A sample:

Health Care Reform is the Civil Rights Act of our time.
And just as then so too now:

I will be happy when my Federal govt. sends in guns to enforce it. Happier yet if some of these bastards get shot dead in the process. They are an anchor on America’s progress. I am tired of abiding the crazies. Tired of their dumb rage. Bring on the bulldozers. Let’s go to war.

    Posted by: koreyel

It doesn’t seem to occur to them that they are a small minority. maybe that great Cuban health care system will start looking good to them.

It also illustrates the authoritarian temptation that always exists for the left. They know that they know better.

  2. That’s a hell fo a quote you found there, Mike.

I will be happy…if some of these bastards get shot dead in the process….I am tired of [] their dumb rage. [] Let’s go to war.

I am tired of their rage, let’s kill them all. Does that perfectly sum up modern liberalism or does that perfectly sum up modern liberalism?

  3. Sometimes it is previously nameless faceless people who emerge and rise as symbols of a cause due to the hideousness of the opposition’s tactics. First it was Ken Gladney being beaten by an SEIU thug and now Mr. Rice has just unwillingly assumed that role. The much maligned “right wing rabble rousers” and “anti-American” town hallers and tea partiers who are legitimately (if loudly) questioning what’s going on in Washington can again today point firmly in the opposite direction at another fine example of what mob activity really looks like. I hope Mr. Gladney and Mr. Rice will both be OK. The fact that it was a black man and a senior citizen who bore the brunt of leftist rage is just too ironic for words.

  11. So what if the guy was treated under Medicare? Mark Steyn pointed out that fact too while guest hosting Rush Limbaugh’s show today. It’s not like the guy could have used his government health-care voucher given to the retired to purchase private insurance and take his private policy to the hospital where his finger was treated.

  17. The man punched someone TWICE IN THE FACE. The second time his pinky went into the victim’s mouth and the victim bit down HARD.
He told an interviewer his pinky was infected and that they couldn’t reattach it. He lied. The hospital reattached his finger, paid by MEDICARE.

I would tend to agree with you, although I wonder how the hospital got around HIPPA to even discuss the treatment in public. The only picture I’ve seen is one that seems to show a missing digit, but it is heavily bandaged and hardly definitive.

  28. I just heard an eye-witness interviewed on the radio.

He said that it was clearly self-defense when the man reached out to swing at the Move On guy.

He explained that the Move On guy had moved into the victim’s “space” (he said within 3feet and in his face) and that the victim reflexively reached to push him away.

He said that he could not say if it was an open handed slapping away or a closed fisted swing. It happened way too quickly.

Grappling in the street then ensued, with the victim then yelling that the Move On guy had just bitten off his finger.

Sure it is. That’s why the little pussy fled the scene. There’s a statement by action of how much the little biter thought his actions were justified.

William Rice should sue MoveOn for damages, as the nut job control freak lefties are whipped into their stupid mobs by that organization for political gain. Soros has deep pockets.

In fact, I would assert that this person was a MoveOn organizational member conducting physical attacks as an intimidation tactic. The Democrats have done this sort of thing before, in their sister organization, the KKK.

Read the last update at the link you provided moron. The hospital spokesperson clearly says it was not reattached. The TPM page itself is wrong.

Why is the hospital spokesperson giving out patient information?

Mary Katherine Ham also interviewed Rice and got the same unattached story as Cavuto.

    daleyrocks (718861)

  33. The witness I heard interviewed said that when he picked up the finger, he called 911 to find out which hospital Mr. Rice was at.

Dispatcher was on the line directing the witness to the hospital, but he said as he turned the corner, there was the finger-biter standing with all the Move On people.

Witness momentarily regretted not taking a cell phone photo of him for the police but felt he had no time to waste in getting the finger to the hospital where perhaps they might re-attach it.

Eric Ingerson (sp?), editor at RedCounty.com, was the first media person on the scene, and was also being interviewed with the witness. He said that the finger was not reattached and that erroneous reports were being freely put out by other media.

    I can’t imagine why.

  44. The important thing is we not notice that the woefully unprepared to lead but somewhat telegenic douchebag what is our president has ushered in an era of civil unrest where parents won’t send their kids to school and anti-government protesters are getting beaten and ridiculed and, in part, eaten, and senior citizens sleep with one eye open as death panels threaten to stalk the land of our once proud little country where people can’t even by their own cars anymore without wanting a government welfare check.

    happyfeet (6b707a)

  45. oh. people can’t even *buy* their own cars anymore without wanting a government welfare check. There was this lady at Ralph’s today get all up in the manager’s grill want to know why the cheese had a price tag on it. It’s just amazing how fast this is going.

    happyfeet (6b707a)

  46. Just to clarify.

Is it OK to defend your self if punched? Sure.

Is it OK to bite someone’s finger off if you get punched? Not so much.

It’s the difference between a misdemeanor battery and felony mayhem.

Also, as noted, the biter here apparently initiated the confrontation by “getting in the face” of Rice, hence my reference to a possible assault. That wouldn’t necessarily justify the battery — but battery does not justify mayhem.

  51. I don’t have any experience with biting off fingers but it seems to me it would be a hard thing to do in general, and especially hard to do if someone is coming at you with a clenched or closed fist. It makes me wonder whether Rice’s hand was really in a fist at the time, or if Rice’s hand was more likely to have been open with the fingers extended.

    DRJ (3f5471)

    SteveG (97b6b9)

  54. Dana,

But Rice says he was throwing a punch. I’m sure it can happen but it’s strange.

    DRJ (3f5471)

  55. I know, DRJ, and that’s what makes it puzzling. Scott Bush, the eyewitness I heard interviewed this afternoon, seemed very careful and thoughtful in his responses and descriptions of what took place. Not hurried or excited but deliberate.

He clearly stated that he could not with certainty, say one way or another that it was a fist (hence, punch) or an open handed swatting away. It just happened far too quickly. What he was certain of, however, was that it was a defensive maneuver.

    Dana (863a65)

  56. There is no law against invading somebody’s personal space. There is a law against unwanted contact. Battery. And there is a law against putting someone reasonably in fear of an unwanted contact. Assault.

    nk (df76d4)

  57. If you want to argue failed self-defense, now that’s a different story. But we need to start with whether the punch or the slap was justified.

    nk (df76d4)

  58. nk, it will be very interesting to see how this plays out.

The witness stated that the finger-biter intentionally came across the street, asked if that group supported the public option; when they in unison replied, no, he then went directly over to Mr. Rice (he used the words ‘singling him out’), was in ‘his space’ leaning in, and then the physical conflict began.

Mr. Bush said that it seemed obvious it was leading up to that moment because of the intentional confrontation by the opposition (coming toward his side of the street), and the singling out of Mr Rice.

Is self-defense determined by the level (or perceived) of threat or danger one believed they were in?

    Dana (863a65)

  59. When do you hit him? That is the question. Legally.

Practically. You better hit him first, hit him hard, and keep hitting him until he’s down. If you’re sixty-five years you might want to let others do the hitting for you.

    nk (df76d4)

  60. I don’t know what the truth is but there are some on the pro-health care side who tell a different story.

    DRJ (3f5471)

  61. Actually, if you are 65 I’d say hit hard and fast and then when everyone jumps in…. act like you are having a heart attack.

The other key thing maybe contrary is:
When your finger is being bit, you need to find out real fast if the guy can fight and chew at the same time

    SteveG (97b6b9)

  62. My opinion is that we should not take Rice’s side automatically because, most of all, he’s a loser.

  73. DRJ,

I did note in the original post that accounts of the confrontation varied.

What is not disputed is that Rice punched a man, and the man responded by biting off part of Rice’s finger. And — to respond to nk –regardless of what I think of Rice, the former is a misdemeanor and the latter is a felony. I’m pretty sure he knows that. I suppose arguing that Rice is a “loser” (though none of us has met him) might be a mitigating factor with some jurors, but it’s not supposed to be.

    Karl (28885b)

  74. JW,

First, I don’t get in people’s faces, so they have little reason to try and defend themselves from me in any manner.

Second, biting off a digit takes real effort, that was my point. As others have mentioned elsewhere, you go beyond any claim of self-defense (no matter who started it) at that point and enter felonious mayhem territory.

Third, it wasn’t reattached as far as I’ve heard. The initial story that it was is apparently wrong and irrelevant either way.

Fourth, President Bush is no longer Governor or President. Burn your own strawmen.

Fifth, please point out where I said democrats are evil. Again, burn your own strawmen.

Sixth, another strawman since you will never find anything I’ve said to indicate insulting the President makes someone a traitor, then or now.

Finally, get some rest, you’re hysterical. You said:

The second time his pinky went into the victim’s mouth and the victim bit down HARD.

Try biting a chicken-wing in two with one hard bite. You tried to make it sound like a reaction, I’m telling you it takes more effort than that. You have to be determined. You want to discuss this? Discuss the things I’ve said, not the things you assume I believe or would do. Otherwise, we have nothing to say to one another.

    Stashiu3 (ed6467)

  75. JW Democrat, your reference to the law on advanced directives is as dishonest as you’ve ever been. That you can’t tell the difference between the concerns over a federal panel deciding what treatments are cost effective and a state law allowing people to make their own choices is indicative.

Actually, now that I think of it, its indicative that you copy talking points from others that you don’t understand. That you are in fact completely clueless of.

Your site and other fringe lefty loser sites picked that up. The last link in the post last night had her correcting herself and saying it was not reattached, but TPM did not correct it in its post for some reason even though they linked her correction. You sound like Greenwald – linking shit that disproves your point. Try reading next time, moron.

  87. Killing people “allowing them to die” by pulling care against the wishes of their family.

“Sun Hudson: On March 15, 2005, six-month-old infant Sun Hudson, who had a lethal congenital malformation, was one of the first children to have care withdrawn under the Texas Futile Treatment Law.[2] Doctors demonstrated in the ethics committee reviews that keeping the infant on a respirator would only delay his inevitable death.
Tirhas Habtegiris: In December 2005, Tirhas Habtegiris, a young woman and legal immigrant from Africa, was removed from a respirator. Habtegiris died from complications of incurable and untreatable cancer that had spread to her lungs.
Andrea Clark: In April 2006, relatives of 53-year old Andrea Clark were given the 10-day notice under this act.[3][4] She had reportedly signed a statement she did not wish to die and was cognizant, although having difficulties communicating while under heavy medication and after her brain was damaged by internal bleeding and the effects of heart disease. After publicity from both right and left political groups, St. Luke’s hospital in Houston agreed to review the case again, eventually retracting the original decision this further review. Clark ultimately died on May 8, 2006 after an infection.

  88. Interesting how the angry hatey violence comes from the Left. This clown was just doing what Barcky told him to do, get in people’s faces.

“I’m amazed you’re not aware of this.”

JW – If Obama’s Kevorkian Care passes, this will spread like wildfire beyond just the type of cases you highlighted. Have you ever heard of “Death Panels?” I’d be amazed if you hadn’t.

  91. None of the proposals under consideration by the Federal government have anything to do with “death panels.” None. Zilch. Zippo. Nada.

However, Republican Texas Governor George W. Bush signed a “death panel” bill into law, and it should be repealed immediately.

    Don’t you agree?

  92. “If Obama’s Kevorkian Care passes”

Kevorkian helped people who wanted to die.

Bush’s law kills people who don’t want to die, but can’t afford to pay to stay alive. Bush’s law does exactly[!] what you accuse Obama of trying to do, even though Obama is attempting nothing of the kind and Democrats are opposed to the law Bush signed in Texas.

You’re not opposed to death panels you’re opposed to democrats.

  94. Some seniors revert to children, its part of the aging process (I guess he forgot to “Keep your hands to yourself”). In the Neil Cavuto, interview he is a protestor but now they are trying to change the fact and say that he just innocent bystander. Now the wingnuts have a new idol to worship, a new hero. Please, snore, snore.
