Problem-Solving for Bears

The Snowmass (Colorado) Parks and Recreation Department found a novel way to help a stranded bear escape from a Snowmass skate park:

Stranded bear

(Tina White | Snowmass Village Police Department)

“The Snowmass Parks and Recreation Department got a call about a bear stuck in a huge bowl at the town’s new skateboard park, so crews lowered down a ladder. The bear scurried up it and then wandered off.”

  1. Black bears have a tree climbing behavior so it was willing to climb the ladder.

  3. Why did they build a friggin’ bear moat in the first place?

  4. Heh. The bear probably wonders that, too.

  5. I’ve been to Aspen, for the music festivals, and they are one bunch of weird hippie types. I expect the Snowmass people are not all that far from the tree.

  6. Oh, good grief. This looked like “escape from a Snowmass sktate park” to me on first (and subsequent) readings.

But I still figure that the bear climbed in there thinking that people were going to throw peanuts.

  7. I’m surprised they didn’t first offer him a skateboard.

  8. My first thought was that I was glad that they didn’t give the bear a pistol, rifle, or shotgun. That whole “right to arm bears” business.

I think he probably forgot to pay admission?

And I imagine that a bear could be pretty hard on the trucks.

This is Snowmass we’re talking about.

If there is anyplace that a bear ought to be armed, just to be prepared to handle annoying hippies…

  11. Beldar,

    Wouldn’t he need two skateboards?

  12. The fools! They are helping them learn to use tools!

Soon, the Bear Rebellion will begin, and we will all be doomed!!!

  13. Scott, its cousin was watching me flyfishing last week on the White River and yet, I don’t think I’m going to see any black bears tying a Parachute Adams onto a fly line anytime soon.

  14. Smarter than the average bear.

  15. This isn’t as funny as the transgender anarchist story 🙁

  16. They didn’t even need to leave a pic-a-nick basket at the top of the ladder?

We’ll all be fine Scott, as long as there’s no ‘Obearma.’ 😉

  18. I’ve had raccoons climb into dumpsters looking for food, and then been unable to get out. The last time, it was mama coon and several of her young’uns. I put a 2 x 6 at an angle into the dumpster, and mama and all but one of the babies took the hint and climbed out, but the last one never figured it out. Mama was watching me closely as I put on some welding gloves, had to climb in the dumpster, and put the last baby raccoon — whom I then named “Leviticus” — about half way up the board, at which point he got the hint and climbed the rest of the way out.

Mama raccoon looked at me like she understood what I was doing, then led her brood away.

  19. Maybe the Feds can lower down a ladder and we can climb out of this recession.

  20. I thought this was going to be a discussion on what is wrong with the Chicago entity that bills itself as a professional football team, and I thought Jay Cutler was going to be their saviour.

I will savor Obama’s pain as the Packers pummel the Bears.

  21. Geez, someone call the Feds on these people. That is a clear violation of OSHA ladder use regulations. Self supporting ladders are not allowed to be used when leaning against a wall!

    agesilaus (2e0372)

  22. Agesilaus is on to something. I would question the rating of that ladder. I suspect the bear could well exceed the weight rating. And there’s photographic proof a ladder of proper length was not used as the bear was required to use rungs above which big placards very clearly state “DO NOT USE”. The people who made all these egregious and life-threatening decisions should all be fired, fined and imprisoned.

It wouldn’t have been so bad if they were helping a human out of the hole, but the fact it was an animal makes it so much worse! Boil the culprits in HNO3.

  23. Should have left him there and just fed him skater punks.
