Deadly Air Crash Over the Hudson (Updated)

Filed under: Current Events — DRJ @ 2:00 pm

[Guest post by DRJ]

The Hudson River was the scene of a deadly air crash around Noon EST today as a small airplane collided with a tour helicopter. There are no survivors.

TV news reports say the plane hit the helicopter from the rear, severing one of the plane’s wings and the helicopter’s rotors. The plane reportedly carried 2 adults and a child, while the helicopter’s occupants included the pilot and 5 Italian tourists.

My condolences.

UPDATE: Fox News has photos.

  3. About 20 years ago, a news and traffic helicopter hit some low hanging wires and went into the water in New York City. One of the most terrifying things I’ve ever heard is the TV newswoman’s cry as she saw the wires just a moment too late and they hit. She was on the air at the time and they did not survive. It was really eerie.

  4. are you thinking of this one? … very similar anyway… this one’s weird as the people at the station are sort of uncertain what just happened

  5. Actually, the crash was not the result of a wire strike. The NTSB found that the sprag clutch that was installed in the helicopter (on lease to WNBC Radio) was a military surplus part which was not designed for use in a civilian aircraft, and that the part had not been adequately lubricated. It directly led to a mid-air seizure. You can clearly hear the failure on the tape.
