Mark Sanford Can’t Shut Up

Filed under: Politics — DRJ @ 3:27 pm

[Guest post by DRJ]

From Hot Air:

“Sanford: I “crossed lines” with other women too. Also, Maria’s my soulmate.
***
During an emotional interview at his Statehouse office with The Associated Press on Tuesday, Sanford said Chapur is his soul mate but he’s trying to fall back in love with his wife.”

Wow. He’s quite a catch.

  1. Mark: Stop digging.

  2. They need to get rid of him – now. Unfit for office at this point, minimize the damage before it’s too late.

    Dmac (f7884d)

  3. Gah. I hope he had the decency to disclose these lesser indiscretions to Mrs. Sanford *before* announcing them to the world. And then I hope he shuts the heck up.

    Dana (8d88ef)

  4. No wonder he couldn’t fight the stimulus, he was over-stimulated himself. I think he drew little hearts and wrote Mrs. “Maria” Sanford in little clouds in the margins of his legal paperwork. His wife is no dumbbell this marriage is toast as is his political career.

    Mary (1dc631)

  5. [understatement alert] This man has issues.

    Stashiu3 (3fc50f)

  6. He said he was blowing off steam, not anything else.

He’s probably a very tense guy.

  7. DRJ

Maybe he needs to fall out of love with himslf first….

    EricPWJohnson (a7d970)

  8. DRJ’s post title is more ladylike than Allah’s.

    nk (bef3ab)

  9. I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt for falling in lust with some beautiful Argentinean woman. I did so every time I walked down Calle Florida. But … he has issues, no doubt. She is his cell soul mate. Ouch. I hope for his sake that Mrs. Sanford isn’t packin’ heat.

  10. They said someday you’ll find
    All who love are blind
Oh, when your heart’s on fire
    You must realize
    Smoke gets in your eyes

And, BTW, I was thinking of Allah’s earlier post.

    nk (bef3ab)

  11. So…tell me again that marital vows don’t apply to judgement.

This character is saying stuff like this in front of recording cameras and microphones, not sobbing into his beer with an old buddy.

    Judgement?

He has none. His is coming.

    Eric Blair (c8876d)

  12. Wife: “Yeah, how about NO.”

    Ken (c97a0c)

  13. Maybe if Jenny would act like a dirty dirty whore he might could fall in love with her again. He should keep a notebook or maybe she should keep a notebook. Someone should keep a notebook. This might could be really beautiful.

    happyfeet (71f55e)

  14. Carlitos, did you see the pictures of the Porteno he’s in love with ?

    They both need bark collars.

    Mike K (2cf494)

  15. I disagree. I think it’s perfectly natural, a biological thing, and nothing to chide the man about.

  16. Holy Jeebus, happyfeet. You are slaying me.

It’s hard to understand just how stupid people can be.

  18. Half my family is from/lives in SC.

The state is livid, they’d recall him right now if they could.

    Techie (482700)

  19. feets – Can you give the ladies here some dirty dirty whore lessons or recommend some reading or something? Just askin’. It didn’t go over to well at home for me, but you never know. Just sayin’.

  20. The Japanese are a lot instructive I think with their animations. Uniforms are very very important.

    happyfeet (e8d590)

  21. I was sick of Michael Jackson and now I’m sick of Mark Sanford.

I was sorry for Jenny, and now I have great pity and compassion for her. She’s a jem who married a cad/bum.

Now, if Mark was a Dem, she’d be strong-armed to ‘stand by her man’ like the rest of them did.

    ManlyDad (060305)

  22. Maybe Jenny is stuck with him but is the state of SC? I think SC has earned its way out of the relationship.

    SarahW (fdd722)

  23. Sanford needs to call for an illegal referendum extending his term and then we can send Justice Sotomayor to spank him.

    SteveG (c99c5c)

  24. Its hard to believe Jenny Sanford wants to be married to a lovesick starry-eyed teenybopper held hostage by hormones any more than SC wants to be governed by a lovesick starry-eyed teenybopper held hostage by hormones.

    Dana (8d88ef)

  25. I dunno about happyfeets’ “idea”, but kicking your man out of the house is not the best way to hold on to him.

    nk (bef3ab)

  26. DRJ, you are the all-time champion in coming up with great titles for your blog posts.

    JVW (a8c610)

  27. JVW,

That is such a nice compliment but I’m a distant second to Patterico when it comes to humor and wit on this blog and I’m a distant third to both P and Karl when it comes to analytical posts. But I’m glad to be in the same ballpark.

Which reminds me, we need a sports post.

    DRJ (cdbef5)

  28. Give the guy a break. It’s obvious he’s only been getting BJs, except from the Argentine woman, and she’s his soulmate, for Chrissakes!

    DWPittelli (2de73b)

  29. What a gift.

    DCSCA (9d1bb3)

  30. Think Obama will travel to Argentina for you, DCSCA? Think again.

    nk (bef3ab)

  31. Does the Argentinian mistress count as a Wise Latina?

    Techie (482700)

  32. Jenny is the one with all the money. She should just call her lawyer, who, I’m sure, would be more than willing to relieve her of this dead weight. Then Mark could run off to Argentina. But possibly that would take some of the fun out of this whole affair. Illicit does make it more interesting. Not that I would know.

    PatAZ (9d1bb3)

  33. From Moonstruck, “Snap out of it”!

If I were there, I’d slap him a good one, too.

    Patricia (2183bb)

  34. Maybe this is some kind of mental illness. I can’t wait for the People Magazine interview with “the other woman.”

This makes me think that Springer’s show is highbrow entertainment.

    Eric Blair (0b61b2)

  35. Mike K, I found photos on teh google. She’s not my cup of tea, but then again, he’s a loon.

The ones I am remembering are like little dolls – 5’0″, 100 pounds, they spend all day playing tennis or doing aerobics or on the treadmill, then they eat dinner at 10PM and go dancing. It’s a different sort of thing.

With humble apologies to female readers. Men are pigs.

    carlitos (84409d)

  36. I thought those pics were from facebook and didn’t match the description of a blonde.

No matter, though. Sanford deserves our compassion for being crazy enough to blow a fantastic life… I guess it’s fantastic literally, too.

But he really let the world down with this. He knew he was bringing a huge mess to his state, family, and to the world. He knew the media would make a mountain out of this. Now it’s like he’s fanning the flames. I would love to see a politician file for divorce while in office, and then begin a relationship with the would-be mistress. If Sanford truly loved this woman, I would hope he’s have done that.

So i think he really just loves the idea of being the victim.

    Juan (0a6638)

  37. What a duece bag!!!! Both women should run away and maybe he can continue to cross the lines with other women when he travels.

    Sarah (cbe7fa)

  38. feets – Uniforms are important.

Plus every house should have a stripper pole is what I think. They come in handy when your friend are over watching football and they need to grab onto something to avoid falling over on the way to the refrigerator or somewhere else.

    daleyrocks (718861)

  39. I’ve sometimes wondered whether my disdain of Bill Clinton was greatly impacted by my dislike of his “lefty” politics and party. So with Sanford, I have someone to use as sort of a double-blind test case, as a “control group,” if you will.

Well, the results are in, and South Carolina’s governor still comes off to me as a big joke, as a screwball, as a self-absorbed fool. In some ways I’m even more ticked off at someone like him because he’s stinking up my side of the political aisle. IOW, I expect better from the right, since the left, by contrast, with its sloppy, feel-good attitude, often doesn’t mind lying down with dogs and waking up with fleas.

Moreover, Sanford appears to be so shameless that he’s still yakkity yakking about the revelations of his scroungy behavior, publicized to the public and his family for several days now. That’s another sign that he really has to go, go, go—as in booted out the door.

    Mark (411533)

  40. shut up! shut up! Shut the holy sweet f***ing jesus up! Jesus, Mary and Joseph just shut up! I think he could be placed on the correct path again – but first he must be beaten with sticks while running a gauntlet of angry divorced women.

Well ladies – congratulations. This is what you get when you whine incessantly about a man needing to be more “romantic” – dude ends up crying all over himself on TV while blubbering about his “soul-mate.” Disgusting.

    Californio (6657ce)

  41. Yeah, yuk yuk, what a loser, etc. He was wrong… but I’ll bet his wife was an icicle who thinks that once every two months is just fine. It takes a pretty well-controlled man not to make other arrangements under such circumstances.

    Jack (f5f61f)

  42. In a society that defines people based on their desires alone, it is not surprising to see a man struggling to remain committed to his wife if his desires run against his commitment. Marital desire must be cultivated, and other desires must be starved, in order for that level of relationship to survive. The persevering maturity required for this is counter to everything in today’s desire driven society.

Decision and commitment are now considered to be living a lie. Desire is now supposed to define who we are.

    Amphipolis (b120ce)

  43. A man goes to confession. He says, “Father, I am happily married man, thirty years with my wife, with four children and nine grandchildren. But last night, my secretary and I were working late in the office. She handed me a fax and our fingers touched. It was like electricity. We both tore off our clothes and spent the whole night making wild, abandoned love, in every variation we could think of. It was as though I were nineteen again.”

The priest says, “For your penance I want you to say five Our Fathers and five Hail Marys and put five dollars in the poorbox”.

The man says, “Penance? But I’m Jewish.”

The priests asks, “Then why did you tell me all this?”

The man says, “Are you kidding? I’m telling everybody.”

    nk (218382)

  44. nk, where do you get these?! Too funny.

Decision and commitment are now considered to be living a lie. Desire is now supposed to define who we are.

What a great and accurate comment. Fewer want to do the hard work anymore. Fallen creatures, surely, but the continual justification and rationalizations, meh. A nation of moral cowards…

    Dana (8d88ef)

  45. Honestly, (good looking) Dana, I have been, and still am, in love with a woman, and the worst thing I can think about Mark Sanford is that his situation is cute.

    nk (218382)

  46. Zorba said, about women: How can I not love them? Poor weak creatures… and they take so little, a man’s hand on their breast, and they give you all they got.

Sanford went to Argentina for this one. That’s a lot more.

    nk (218382)

  47. Mark who?

    AD - RtR/OS! (5fd0fb)

  48. Perhap Sanford can add to the scandal by releasing some sex tapes with this lady? Waiting for the Breck Girl’s nakedness with his mistress to show up on web. Anyway, the Sanford lady is a bit like the retired Argentinian tennis player Gabriela Sabatini, age 39, who has full frontal nudity pics on the web…collars and cuffs match.

    aoibhneas (55634c)

  49. Sanford is acting like a teenager with all these childish confessions and public tears. Obviously he’s never had any experience as a “player” prior to marriage. Every man needs this critical experience prior to getting married.

Also, our society is getting too puritanical with private sexual matters of public figures. We create standards for sexual morality and bring down otherwise good men, yet our society really has no superior sexual morality than the rest of the developed world where people are allowed to conduct their private affairs separate from their public persona, as long as no laws are broken.

I am not a fan of Sanford by any measure, in fact I abhor his hypocrisy. Still, when do we stop this foolishness in this country? If we accept the fact that the male specie is naturally promiscuous, Sanford would have had no need to hide and lie publicly about his affair. It would only concern his wife and family. Try as we may, we cannot deny or stop this natural tendency in men, which in fact, is quite healthy. Let’s stop this national hypocrisy and wishful thinking that the male specie would lose what he was naturally created to have – the instinct of sexual pursuit.

    Merlin (140cb3)

  50. Maria will dump him. Women like her go after men of sexy “power” so to speak. Once that’s gone (and it will be) she’ll be gone. And the former Mrs. Sanford won’t be waiting around for the leftovers.

    dianne (d633e3)

  51. Women like her go after men of sexy “power” so to speak.

That seems somewhat unsubstantiated. Not to mention rude.

    aphrael (e0cdc9)

  52. merlin and Jack are ones that I do not care for. Kind of like this soon-to-be ex-Gov.

    JD (00531d)

  53. Many Latin American countries have a very different attitude about such things. A friend of mine, a woman from Panama, told me she moved to the US to get away from the male culture of the Latins. Every married man she knew had a mistress. Even if they were not that into sex, they had to have one so they had a place (the mistress’s apartment) to entertain their men friends and play poker. The Argentine woman is probably wondering what all the fuss is about.

Mitterand’s mistress and her kids (of his) were at his funeral along with his official family.

    Mike K (2cf494)

  54. Politically, Sanford should stay in office. He’s the gift that keeps on giving. Americans haven’t been treated to a circus with a train wreck this good since the screening of “The Greatest Show On Earth.” Personally, though, I’d like to see him step down for the good of the people of South Carolina and tend to his personal life on his own dime. But then, they seem to know what’s good for themselves. So far, they appear to prefer the ongoing pathos of a clown as governor.

    DCSCA (9d1bb3)

  55. So, politically, you like to see scandals exploited to help your party. It’s not about results… just party.

    Juan (81687c)

  56. DCSCA, we know your personal preferences. Thankfully, the rest of the country is not all that much into activities that involve silicone and KY Jelly in front of a picture of Obama. But thanks for the Demented C____ S____ insight.

    nk (218382)

  57. aphrael, why is this unsubstantiated?

He’s a weird guy with a family. Why would he be able to get so many women? Oh… he happens to be a governor? I think it’s a very reasonable claim to say his power is what gave him appeal, and that without it, and as a well known joke, he will have far less appeal.

It’s also not rude. This woman he slept with is a piece of shit, and there’s just no way around it. Sometimes you have to call them like they are, and this woman isn’t fit to scrap the scum off a garbage can. Neither is this man, but he’s being pilloried while the mistress is being ignored. This affair did damage.

    Juan (81687c)

  58. Mark Sanford is a stand up guy, below the waist.

Was anyone on that conference call last month with the RGA and Sanford and Perry? When they asked for suggestions, Sanford said something about twitter and email: “I’m so unsavvy.” Funny to read my notes now. This guy is hurting his kids more than the GOP, and that’s saying a lot.

    Vermont Neighbor (4126d0)

  59. #54- When a conservative hypocrite implodes, best to stand aside and watch the show. Personally, I’d like to see the GOP message moderate. Eventually it will. It’s sorely out of date and out of step with the country today. But then, politically, why stop the shrinking wing of a shrinking party from shrinking further. It’s the gift that keeps on giving.

    DCSCA (9d1bb3)

  60. International Man of Parody just cracks me up.

    JD (00531d)

  61. No doubt its wish for the GOP and conservatives to ease up on Obama is wholly sincere. The clay feet on its Messiah are showing. Obama’s approval index from Rasmussen has fallen into negative territory for the first time. Self-identified conservatives make up 40 percent of the population according to Gallup. People are realizing Obama just can’t hack it as president.

    Brother Bradley J. Fikes, C.O.R., (cea386)

  62. Well, you can hold your hands over your ears and eyes, saying…

“…why stop the shrinking wing of a shrinking party from shrinking further…”

But you would need to ignore this:

    Darned VRWC!

I won’t even comment on the repeated use of the word “shrinking” in the context of the topic of this thread.

  63. But the guy is just trolling. At least we haven’t had any new Walter Mitty stories.

    Liar, liar, pants on fire.

    Literally. And figuratively. Blech.

Hey, how do you think MJ came up with the one-glove gimmick?

    AD - RtR/OS! (5fd0fb)

  66. DCSCA, I guess this is some kind of funny game for you, and really, there’s not anything wrong with that in this case. Sanford deserves to be mocked, and GOP leaders should know they can’t do the things Democrats do.

We’ll see if Obama’s narrow election victory really spells the end for conservatism. I know that things always seem to change. Democrats extrapolate madly that X,Y,and Z races will never leave them, that population changes are coming, etc. But they forget that once they actually get power, if they royally destroy the world like they did a couple times in the past, huge demographics will turn against them.

It wasn’t that long ago that whites dramatically favored the Democrats for their racial politics. Things change. For one, I doubt savvy Hondurans or intelligent Iranians will support Democrats if he stays this course. Honduras borders Mexico, and we’re only a couple of huge mistakes away from Mexicans turning their backs on the democrats.

Probably won’t happen, but you never know. In the long run, huge changes are nearly guaranteed. We already see that far more people call themselves conservative than ever before and Obama’s polls have dropped faster than any president in modern history. It’s only been a few months… perhaps Obama’s costly errors will be the medicine this nation needed to finally stop the entitlement culture and racial politics the democrats have been promoting for such a long time.

    Juan (81687c)

  67. why stop the shrinking wing of a shrinking party from shrinking further

Sounds like a bad case of projection – are you in fact discussing your schlong’s properties here? You know, they have little blue pills for elderly men like yourself that may help with that problem. But watch out if you take them – what little blood that remains in your pants will soon travel upward and explode your cranium .

    Dmac (f7884d)

  68. It would only take a couple of cc’s to royally burst that pitiful example of ear-spacing.

    AD - RtR/OS! (5fd0fb)

  69. #61- Odd spin. Since the Gallup snapshot poll reads VERY conservative at 9% and conservative at 31%. I suppose that’s like adding a scoop of just plain vanilla to a bowl of French vanilla and calling it all vanilla. Figures. Yet the largest single group is moderates (thank God) at 35% with liberals at 16% and 5% very liberal with no opinion at 4%. We’ll be happy to tally up the moderates along with the liberal and very liberal totally 56%. You can have the 4% with no opinion. Seems apt.

And of course you neglect the composition of the make up as well– There is an important distinction in the respective ideological compositions of the Republican and Democratic Parties. While a solid majority of Republicans are on the same page — 73% call themselves conservative — Democrats are more of a mixture. The major division among Democrats is between self-defined moderates (40%) and liberals (38%). However, an additional 22% of Democrats consider themselves conservative, much higher than the 3% of Republicans identifying as liberal.

But you go on believing that 9% scoop represents the United States. And keep losing elections. What a gift.

    DCSCA (9d1bb3)

  70. You are just f*cking amazing, IMP. Breath-taking. You should be studied by scientists.

    JD (3f2bdf)

  71. #65- Hardly narrow but that’s a discussion for another thread. The irony is conservatism is imploding on its own. It doesnt need any more help from the moderates in the center or the left. Americans turned away from it because the ideology has failed the nation. Conservatism has always fought change of any kind, even in itself. That’s the nature of it. It’s not a good fit for an era of change. and the times, they are a changin’, thank God. Change brings aprehension and anxiety which is to be expected in polls as we look ahead. But confident, competent leadership will prevail, in spite of conservative squawaking to the different.

    DCSCA (9d1bb3)

  72. #66- Speak for yourself. Apparently it struck a nerve in you.

    DCSCA (9d1bb3)

  73. DCSCA, it strikes a nerve in me too. the idea that my nation is actually becoming MORE liberal in the face of Obama’s disaster and depression and foreign policy failure is just plain scary. And thankfully, it’s not the case.

I don’t care if you’re some old man or some kid, but you really don’t come across as an aged man at all.

    AD - RtR/OS! (5fd0fb)

  76. I am not a fan of Sanford by any measure, in fact I abhor his hypocrisy.

His hypocrisy really isn’t what makes him a joke as much as his crappy judgment. What the hell was he thinking when he took off to South America without informing the people around him? And he must be a mental case if he believed he could behave the way he has without any of it coming to light.

Again, a sign of great vulnerability to very poor judgment and decisionmaking on his part. When someone can be that big a flake, I’d have little confidence in him (or her) from that day forward.

Therefore, I wouldn’t put it past someone like Sanford to also show moments of foolishness when it comes to purely work-related matters, such as, for example, approving a huge increase in taxes because he doesn’t want to keep fighting his opponents in the legislature any longer and, in turn, delaying passage of a final budget, due to his desire to get home quickly to screw his mistress, or hooker, or whatever.

Still, when do we stop this foolishness in this country? If we accept the fact that the male specie is naturally promiscuous, Sanford would have had no need to hide and lie publicly about his affair.

That is a very accurate reading of human nature, of the male in particular. That’s why I believe the symbolic and legal dumbing-down of marriage and cultural issues in general is opening up more and more people to a c’est-la-vie attitude about polygamy, common-law marriages, unfaithfulness, and flaky behavior overall. It takes a lot more to shock the average person nowadays — myself included — which means the way we define dysfunction has become more and more narrow.

    Mark (411533)

  77. a c’est-la-vie attitude about polygamy, common-law marriages, unfaithfulness, and flaky behavior overall

All true. Worse is that Sanford is just totally going over a cliff. I never thought I’d see the day when John Edwards and his handling of Reilly Whozit looked rational, in comparison with another pol.
