Nevada Senator Ensign Admits Affair; Resigns GOP Leadership Post

Filed under: Politics — DRJ @ 5:24 pm

[Guest post by DRJ]

Ensign confessed an affair with a campaign aide, the wife of one of his senior staffers, and has now resigned as chairman of the Republican Policy Committee.

Good (the resigned part, not the affair).

  1. Extra marital affairs are the only vice left in Nevada. All the others are legal.

The two Senators from Nevada should be Spitzer and Bennett – now that’s what I call representation.

  2. Compare and contrast how this would play out on the Left and on the Right.

  3. The husband wanted money for it. What a bunch of creeps, all of them.

    nk (e186cd)

  4. That is kind of creepy. It seems like he only announced this because it appeared as though the jilted hubby was going to go public with it. Not exactly the action of a stand-up guy. It is sad that this is small potatoes for a politician. That kind of offense could not even land him a precinct committeeman seat in Chicago.

  5. Oh piffle, you ‘fess up not because you are caught but because you are remorseful and regretful and repentant about the wrong you’ve done. This is just another egocentric pol who couldn’t keep his pants zipped up and had his hand forced. Nothing honorable about his admittance. Damage control and self-interest. And it’s interesting to note that his paramour’s 19-year old son was also on his payroll. All in the family.

Both Doug and Cynthia Hampton were already working in senior positions for Ensign when their son Brandon Hampton
was hired to do “research policy consulting” for the NRSC in March 2008. The younger Hampton, 19, was paid $5,400…

  9. I don’t agree with toss ’em out, unless that standard was applied universally. People deserve the representation they vote for.

    JD (dab43d)

  10. If that standard was applied universally, there would be very few people in Congress, which would be a net positive.

  12. SPQR – Meanwhile, the Democrats leave their corrupt senators and representatives in place, like Dodd, Murtha, Rangel, etc.

Oh come on, SPQR, there hasn’t even been an investigation into those people.

Well, I mean, a completed investigation.

  13. Ensign condemned Clinton and urged him to resign. He condemned Larry Craig. He urged passage of the defense of marriage amendment and waxed rhapsodic about the sanctity of marriage.

Put on a red shirt, Ensign.

You don’t win a barfight by being the only guy in the room who refuses to use a pool cue on the other guy. That’s the GOP.

  18. Gee. What happens in Vegas suddenly happens to be front page news.

Nobody really cares about his peccadilloes. Or who he screwed beside himself, his career, his family and his family values party image. It was all his private affair, until he chose– or was forced– to make it a public matter. Just another example of the incredible hypocrisy revealed by a pious, judgmental, conservative Republican who self-righteously talked the talk to others but didn’t walk the walk when it came to his own life.

  20. DCSCA comment in a nutshell ..

Democrats excuse and condone degeneracy so ergo when they are caught being degenerate it is OK. Regardless if their excusing and condoning only makes society worse.

Republicans criticize degeneracy so ergo when they are caught being degenerate it is NOT OK. Because being a hypocrite is worse than being a contributor to society’s ills.

    No hypocrisy there right DCSCA?

  21. The voracious sense of entitlement for someone who’s been so entrusted to bag some convenient hoochie not only disqualifies this loser Senator for a position of power but also it reflects very very poorly on the judgment of the people who stand by him. Atonement. You think you know what it means but actually it doesn’t exist in our little country anymores.

    happyfeet (2d133f)

  22. I dunno. There’s this totally gorgeous divorcee just down the street … and if only my wife were not a superbly trained physician who can do microsurgery, and also has access to any number of agents that can mimic a heart attack or a stroke … 😉

Not exactly. If you are “remorseful and regretful and repentant about the wrong you’ve done,” you end the affair. You don’t humiliate the innocent parties via a public announcement if you don’t have to do so.

If the aggrieved husband was seeking monetary compensation, does that constitute ex post facto pimping?

  27. The Senator’s a lowlife, the “aggrieved” husband’s a pimp, and the object of both of their affections (sarc) is either a cunning hustler or downtreaded person.

  28. Forgot to add that if I were a journo, anytime a politico preaches piously about anything concerning morality or private behavior, I’d look into it. Why they allowed Edwards to skate by with his enormous duplicities speaks volumes about their lack of impartiality.

    Dmac (f7884d)

  29. Still, the John Edwards matter and the Eliot Spitzer matter aren’t even close to being as unsavory as the [former] Governor Jim McGreevey matter. To understand the concept of “another example of the incredible hypocrisy” revealed by someone who “self-righteously talked the talk to others,” let’s not forget that McGreevey not only allegedly had an affair, he also lied to people, right in their face, about his orientation his whole life, too.

    Official Internet Data Office (861c3a)

  30. Regarding McGreevey, nothing will ever touch The Onion’s superb headline: “Homosexual Tearfully Confesses To Being Governor of New Jersey.”

  31. It was not an intern and we all know what “is” is. Poon, if you defended Bill Clinton’s acts, you should really keep your tiny typing fingers in check on this one. If anyone thinks hanky panky is not prevalent in DC, I have some land for sale off the coast of Florida. And I have carbon credits forsale in 10 unit lots. I just wonder why an affair between consenting adults is more of a moral delema than being found with $90,000 in ones freezer. Bribe money that is.

    Did anyone excuse Eliot Spitzer?

  33. And what is the big deal supposed to be? It is not as if Gary Hart paid a price for his affair.

    Michael Ejercito (833607)

  34. I just wonder why an affair between consenting adults is more of a moral delema than being found with $90,000 in ones freezer.

    It is not.

Perjury about the affair is a much more public matter than the affair itself. John Edwards managed to avoid committing perjury about his indiscretions.

    Michael Ejercito (833607)

  35. It is not as if Gary Hart paid a price for his affair

The only reason Hart was drummed out of the race for his adultery is that he baited the MSM continuously regarding the rumors of his past indiscretions – even famous Lefty journos such as Jack Germond recounted his arrogance in challenging anyone following him on the campaign trail to prove it, as recounted in his autobiography Fat Man in the Middle Seat. If he had just shut the hell up about it, nothing would have happened, because the media was disinclined to look into it in the first place.

    Dmac (f7884d)

  36. Who cares? A politician is revealed as a LIAR and not someone you would want as a son or daughter -in-law. Wow. What a revelation – alert the media.

Comment by The uglier Dana — 6/18/2009 @ 5:18 am

Dana, the problem is there was a potential blackmail issue involved and as such most likely it would have been made public. A pre-emptive strike if you will. Bottom line: if you’re an elected official living in a fishbowl, don’t be an idiot. These twits never seem to believe that what they do in secret eventually gets found out and judging by how many of these guys end up publicly humiliated by their own actions, you’d think they’d learn. Unfortunately, innocent spouses and collateral damage go hand in hand.

This myth is not even accurate.

Dems were quick to throw Eliot Spitzer and Tim Mahoney under the bus.

    Michael Ejercito (833607)

  40. Spitzer was nabbed by the Feds, so that’s a terrible example.

    Dmac (f7884d)

  41. “Spitzer was nabbed by the Feds, so that’s a terrible example.”

    example of what?

    imdw (1b1354)

  42. There is a meme that Democrats excuse, condone, or even praise adultery among their ranks. While this was true for Bill Clinton, it was not true for Eliot Spitzer or Tim Mahoney.

Why do some get passes for this type of indiscretion while others do not?
