Obama, PayGo, and Higher Taxes

Barack Obama wants Congress to “Just Say No” to deficits and adopt a pay-as-you-go approach to all future legislation:

“The president’s plan would require Congress to pay for new increases to federal benefit programs such as health care by raising taxes or coming up with budget cuts — a “pay-as-you-go” system that would have the force of law. Under the proposal, if new spending or tax reductions are not offset, there would be automatic cuts in so-called mandatory programs — although Social Security payments and some other programs would be exempt.”

Obama’s words were carefully crafted to deflect and avoid blame for the enormous deficit he created through massive spending. In addition, PAYGO means Congress must either cut spending or raise taxes, and we all know which option Democrats choose.

McCain-Palin warned this would happen but too few Americans believed them:

  2. If they actually believe that they’re going to shove a tax increase down anyone’s throats at this point in time, all I can say is – make my day. The MSM can spin it until the cows come home, no one’s going to buy this one, other than his moon – faced acolytes.

  4. Just think how nice it would have been if he had thought of this a few months ago!?!

I’ll wager there will be plenty of exemptions when Congress acts.

  5. Not to worry, DRJ. By the time that the Obama Administration finishes cutting defense spending, there will be plenty of “savings” left to spend on Dear Leader’s new programs.

And as Corwin writes, this legislation will no doubt be riddled with loopholes so that the administration and congress can increase the deficit during war and peacetime, boom time and recession. If Obama were really serious about deficit reduction he would simply announce that the deficit must be cut by $250 billion (an arbitrary number) each year for the next four years or he won’t sign that fiscal year’s budget.

  6. If Obama was really serious he would submit a balanced budget today. Congress has no obligations to fund anything at all, including social security and medicare and federal retirement plans. Nothing at all. So he can submit a budget again tomorrow if should choose to do so with all of the cuts he deems necessary and he can veto any budget given to him. Its all a sham with him but the tax hikes will come but the spending cuts other than defense never will.

  7. Gee what happened to Obama’s pledge that ninety five percent of Americans would see a tax cut and not see a dime in tax increases if he were elected.
Guess that became inoperative. Or else in Obama’s Clintonian style he meant, no ninety five percent of Americans won’t have ten cents in tax increases, they’ll have four thousand dollars or more in tax increases. See no lie,a four thousand dollar increase isn’t a dime increase.

  9. I like what Reynolds has said about comments about spending like drunken sailors “[I] think that expression is actually unfair to drunken sailors. Drunken sailors generally spend cash that they’ve already earned themselves, rather than running up debt to be paid by others. If our politicians started spending like drunken sailors, it would in fact represent a dramatic improvement.”

  14. As politics go, PAYGO is a MASTER stroke by Obama.

    1. He can claim fiscal prudence

    2. He can codify astronomically high taxes to cover existing obligations

    3. He can ask for more more more taxes to new entitlements like cover health care.

Pretty easy to me to see what he is angling for. Brilliant politics if even the most disgusting in terms of honesty.

Cocktailers, is Obama still a good man?

  15. I have to find the original article from yesterday but Obama is going to allow Congress to borrow the money to satisfy PayGo provisions as long as the borrowing is paid back by future “savings”. Crock and one half.
