L.A. Times Misses the “Or Saved” Portion of “Created Or Saved”

The L.A. Times headline reads: Obama promises more than 600,000 stimulus jobs.

As the kids say on the Internet: ORLY?

So you’re telling me (I thought as I read the headline) that he’s abandoning that B.S. ass-covering “created or saved” language that allows him to claim victory in the teeth of failure?

So I read on, and the answer is: not hardly:

“As a result of this accelerated pace of activity, over 600,000 jobs are expected to be created or saved by the Recovery Act in the second 100 days – four times the number created or saved in the first 100 days,” the White House will say in a statement being released this morning..

By the way, for amusement purposes, compare the implicit boast here of 150,000 jobs “created or saved” with the actual numbers set forth in the article:

The promised boost in employment will not offset the job losses of recent months — with more than 1.6 million jobs shaved from the economy since Congress approved the stimulus plan in February. Unemployment last month reached 9.4 percent, the highest since 1983.

And we’re going to do four times that well?

Somebody pinch me.

  1. It’s always a wonder–if they’re going to make shit up, why not make up some good shit? Some shit worth believing?

150 thousand jobs saved? Screw that, Obama saved 150 million jobs!

  2. It is absolutely disgraceful that these clowns are allowed to pedal that “created or saved” line without being called out by the media. It ultimately won’t matter as the public is catching on no matter how hard they spin it.

“Shaved” usually implies a small amount. I don’t want to be paranoid, but I wonder if they’re hoping people won’t read it too closely and think it says “…1.6 million jobs saved…”

  6. The US lost 1.6 million jobs since the stimulus was passed, but it would have been 1.75 million jobs lost without the stimulus. I think that’s what they’re saying. They want to run on that platform. Of course, since unemployment is higher, no jobs have been saved.

The standard Federal Government lie appears to be that any stimulus creates about 600,000 jobs. On March 31, 2008, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson said this about the stimulus checks:

“We know they’re going to be helpful,” Paulson said on CNN television. “These checks should be a big part of adding 500,000 to 600,000 additional jobs this year.”

But where is the GOP on this? (as I posted) Republicans need to stop moaning about the media and get off their a***s and start running to the microphones themselves. The public disapproves of much of what Obama is doing… and the GOP is sitting on their hands.

  10. Just forget about this 9.4% unemployment computer model nonsense, and let reality sink in…

From this morning’s newsletter from currency maven, Chuck Butler:

“…First of all… The Bureau of Lying Statistics, I mean Labor Statistics, reported on their website that 220,000 jobs were created in May through the Birth/Death Model… And 43,000 of the 220,000 “ghost jobs” were construction jobs… Really? You’ve got to be kidding me! But if you think that’s all… That’s just the tip of the labor iceberg… The number of unemployed persons actually increased by 787,000 in May! The number of long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 weeks or more increased by 268,000 over the month to 3.9 million and has tripled since the start of the recession).

Not that I’m trying bum you out on a Monday morning, I just think you “should know” the score… The total number of unemployed persons is 14.5 million… In January of this year 5 months ago, it was 11.6 million… And… Oh, by the way… The 9.4% Unemployment Rate? It’s probably nearing 20% in “real terms”…

  12. Each day offers another gold mine of material for conservative leaders. The incompetence, corruption, equally absurd and chilling examples of doublespeak, and the manic memory-hole cramming of liberals in politics and the media defies belief. If I were Michael Steele, I couldn’t wait to get up every morning. Instead I never hear a word. What does he do all day? What do the rest of them do all day? If they exercised one-tenth of the outrage and expressive acumen I see on this site… Pathetic.

  13. […] Patterico reads the fine print: “As a result of this accelerated pace of activity, over 600,000 jobs are expected to be created or saved by the Recovery Act in the second 100 days – four times the number created or saved in the first 100 days,” the White House will say in a statement being released this morning.. 14. The biggest “savings” is coming in the form of public sector jobs that are being maintained temporarily while federal stimulus funds are hitting state and local gov’t coffers.

This money wasn’t supposed to be used to fill holes in governmental budgets, but money is fungible. Hawaii schools were set to take a $90 cut in their funding, and federal stimulus money allowed that $90 to be restored, so no cuts to teachers or staffing.

But, when that money runs out and there isn’t a sustainable source of revenue to replace it, those cuts will take place.

Public sector unions are going to shed jobs over the next 6-12 months. Unemployment will go significantly higher as a result. But given the savings that will be realized in terms of gov’t expenditures at the state and local level, that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

  20. Don’t know about the numbers, but the congestion on the freeways will be less.
It has always amazed “disinterested” observers how open and free-flowing the freeways in L.A. are on days that are holidays to government and school employees, but not neccessarily for private industry.

  27. I seem to remember job creation (not “saving or creating,” but, know, creating) jobs month after month for years during the long dark depression of the Bush Administration being spun as inadequate, less than impressive, paltry, fake, lies, etc.

Funny how seriously the Obama-enchanted press takes it’s self-appointed duty of parroting Barack Obama’s talking points.

It’s even funnier watching them gulp as the begin to realize that somebody’s going to have to pony up large chunks of scratch for all of their “hope and change.”

Oh well. You can lead hyper-Keynesians to knowledge, but you can’t make him think.
