When You’ve Lost the Instapundit …

Filed under: Obama — DRJ @ 9:31 pm

[Guest post by DRJ]

Glenn Reynolds, the Instapundit, never struck me as an Obama fan but he’s always given Obama a fair shake. I’m sure he will continue to be fair but tonight’s Instapundit post may have burned any Obama bridges that were still standing:

I’ve bankrupted the nation, so now your only hope is to pass my healthcare plan.”

That goes beyond chutzpah to the edge of pathological dishonesty. Except, I guess, that it’s not pathological if you get away with it. And so far, he has.

Read the entire link. If anything, the lengthy (for him) post sounds even more frustrated than this excerpt conveys.

I think a lot of Americans are getting frustrated with Barack Obama.

  1. what took y’all so long? maybe you were reading his speeches and interviews on the little yellow internet?

Ear Leader is a lying scumbag:first, last and always.

  2. The only thing that will work is Americans will once again work without a nanny state to support them.

Doctors want to treat patients. Autoworkers want to build cars. Home builders want to build homes. Farmers want to grow crops. Bankers want to finance progress.

And they all know how to do these things. Everyone wants to build a stronger country through the fruits of their labor. We, as a people, know how to do this. Do we really need a great orator to tell us how? History has proven that that is a fool’s game.

  3. This takes incredible stones by Teh One, and takes a compliant MSM. The simple fact is that national healthcare, or lack thereof, has not one single thing to do with the current fiscal situation, has very very little to do with the deficits they have incurred since 20 JAN 09. I suppose the MSM could show us where anyone was claiming that nationalizing healthcare was the cure the problems in the financial markets. I will save them the time of looking for that, since it never happened. It is, at best, a dishonest construct.

  4. The only urgency to Obama’s health care plan is the duration of a Democrat controlled Congress through which it can be rammed through in a fiscally irresponsible manner without open debate.

  5. Gallup has Obama’s approval rating at 64% today.

‘Bout the same as it’s been since he took office.

    poon (093c46)

  6. poon – What are the approval ratings of his various policies?

    daleyrocks (5d22c0)

  7. I saw this “poon” thing at another website just today. Expect a tsunami of stupid.

daley – It does not matter, and people like poon do not care. They see a public opinion poll, and cannot differentiate between liking Teh One, and liking his policies. I doubt many of the policies are polled, at least not in a manner that accurately describes them.

Barcky’s approval ratings are over 60%. Submit !

  8. The funny thing about polls, on both sides, is how folks accept the polls that agree with their political psychology, and reject the polls that do not.

So, yes, 60% “approval” of the President looks great.

Do you know the percentage of the public who disapprove of gay marriage?

    Oh, but that is different.

It’s a good example of how partisans really like “the will of the people” when that will agrees with their own notions…but not so much when that will differs.

  9. So Glenn goes critical?
    Who cares?
It would only matter if he were the Ed Page Editor of the NYT, or WaPo.
Otherwise, he’s just another irrelevant nutbag screaming in the wilderness, and the denizens of HuffPo and DK only hear what reinforces their preconceived conceptions of the new coming of Camelot.
We ARE in the best of hands.

  10. daley,

Every time somebody says something along the lines of “a lot of Americans are getting frustrated with Barack Obama,” I wander over to Gallup to check his approval rating.

Gallup is certainly more accurate than the usual anecdotal prognosticating/wishful thinking being bandied about the more desperate rightie blogs these days.

Double desperation points awarded for trying to pass off Instapundit as some sort of impartial political observer.

    poon (093c46)

  11. He loves Gallup…wonder if he ever checks Rasmussen?

    AD - RtR/OS! (f03f38)

  12. Rasmussen has Obama at a 56% approval rating.

Again, same as its been for months.

    poon (093c46)

  13. C’mon, folks. This character is just acting trollish. I can promise that she/he/it does not think that all polls are accurate, despite the current carrying on. It all depends on the partisan bumper sticker on their metaphorical political automobile.

    Such as this Gallup poll:

    http://www.gallup.com/poll/107305/Ruling-SameSex-Marriage-Bucks-Majority-View.aspx

    Or this one:

    http://www.gallup.com/poll/118399/More-Americans-Pro-Life-Than-Pro-Choice-First-Time.aspx

What’s that you are saying? Oh, right: that’s different.

    Eric Blair (0793db)

  14. The Telegraph article that GR linked to is not pretty. Though maybe a failed bond auction is what we need to shock Washington into the Real World.

    Soronel Haetir (a3f11b)

  15. Eric,

Gallup polls certainly are different than some random statement such as “I think a lot of Americans are getting frustrated with Barack Obama.”

Which was my point all along.

    poon (093c46)

  16. Rasmussen has Obama’s ‘Total Approve-Disapprove’ at 56-43. His ‘Strongly Approve-Strongly Disapprove’ rating is 33-30, or +3. He was +28 on his first day in office and it’s gone steadily down from that.

    DRJ (2901e6)

  17. Poon, I think what we are seeing is the flip-side of the Clinton polling gap in the post-Monica era. If you recall, opinion polls after the Lewinsky scandal consistently showed that the American people liked Clinton’s policies while disapproving of Clinton’s character. What we have with Obama may be the reverse: people personally feel attached to him and want him to do well, but there is starting to be some serious doubt about his policies (note Obama’s high ratings in both the strongly approve and strongly disapprove categories).

    JVW (fdc303)

  18. DRJ, no offense but you obviously don’t read Instapundit often. Glenn has bee highly critical of Obama for a few months now. A whole series of sarcastic posts regarding the (in)competence of the administration, the venality of his appointees, and the financial insanity of his economics. Where have you been?

  20. Nope, poon. Nice try, though.

Your point was to adore Barack Obama, and to heap scorn upon those who disagree with the brilliance of a Chicago hack with little experience. Just stirring the pot.

Besides, why did California vote the way it did, if the President’s plans are the way to go?

Partisanship is very dangerous. Both parties need to remember that fact.

    Eric Blair (0793db)

  21. Oh, and I noticed this bit from Professor Reynolds at 4:50 PM today:

“UPDATE: “Is Obama Another Jimmy Carter?” Actually, I’m beginning to think that’s a best-case situation. . . .”

Well, that suggests that Instapundit is no real fan of Hope and Change.

    Eric Blair (0793db)

  22. Kevin,

I don’t equate criticism with across-the-board opposition or unfairness. For instance, I supported George W. Bush in many areas even though I criticized him on immigration, Harriet Miers’ appointment, spending, and some aspects of his domestic agenda. Of course, at some point criticism can turn into opposition and maybe Prof. Reynolds had already reached that point.

    DRJ (2901e6)

  23. JVW,

That’s an very interesting point, especially as it relates to polling. For the past several weeks, the Obama Administration has made a point of releasing a family story on or just before the weekend. Thus, we’ve seen the girls playing on their new swings, Michelle in striking outfits or visiting shelters and schools, her mother attending various cultural events, date night, and the new dog, Bo. The polls always jump after one of these stories is released.

    DRJ (2901e6)

  24. Eric,

Wishing that there’s steady stream of Americans who are losing faith in Obama isn’t the same thing as there actually being one.

Unless you’ve already written off 2012.

In that case, believe what you want.

    poon (093c46)

  25. Riiight, poon. You are just asking questions, I know.

Whatever. George Bush had the highest approval rating of ANY American president…ever.

Just goes to show show you that even the idiotic Amrican public actually gets something right every great once in awhile.

  28. I take it you people do not know what the word ‘poon’ is slang for? It’s a vulgar term for a vagina.

Anyway, yes Obama is popular according to polls. So far.

    Juan (4cdfb7)

  29. What policies is he veering away from Mccain on, exactly?

As far as I can tell, he’s just more pro torture than Mccain. Oh, and pro choice. Otherwise, on bailouts and immigration and Iraq, they might talk different, but Obama = Mccain or bush’s third term.

there’s a lot to be said about how dishonest Obama has been about what he’s doing. Reagan wasn’t like that, and really Bush 43 and Clinton weren’t either.

What’s going on here with Obama’s popularity is that a large segment of the population thinks Obama is cool and new. And a large segment really doesn’t know what Obama’s policies are. That’s going to change soon. Also, the economic problems from spending so much will come home to roost.

We’ll see, though. By my estimation, Obama is doing badly enough that everyone will understand what he’s done. If he’s reelected anyway, that’s truly the will of the country.

I assume Dark Beergod did not consider it disrespectful of ‘Americans’ to criticize the last president. Strange how fascists are also Obama fanatics. Never saw this kind of blind allegiance to Bush.

  34. I have tremendous respect for Glenn but what the heck took him so long? The emperor with no clothes has been pathologically dishonest for years, and most specifically since announcing his candidacy for pres. Pathological dishonesty is one of the hallmarks of Narcissistic Personality Disorder. The occupant of the WH is a narcissist, pathological, a thug and a liar, and he’s surrounded himself with same. This is a surprise to anyone why? A vegetable could have seen all this coming.

  43. “The disdain for Americans is a little silly.”

Not when it comes to history or politics. Most Americans are totally uneducated idiots when it comes to those subjects.

It’s a miracle our political system even functions, given that the American public are the ones who vote in the political leaders (example: our current alleged POTUS).

But, of course, we didn’t become a great country because of our fantastic government or because we had genuises selecting the officials, we became a great country because we hardly had any government at all.

Too bad that’s not the case any more.
