Earthquake
Fairly sharp shaking, lasting only 3-5 seconds, around 8:39 p.m. What did you feel?
UPDATE: Early report is a 5.0, centered 2 miles NNE of Hawthorne.
UPDATE x2: There was a smaller aftershock, magnitude 3.1, at 8:45 p.m. We didn’t feel that one in Rancho Palos Verdes.
UPDATE x3: The quake has been downgraded to a 4.7.
My cousin felt it down in North County San Diego. Said it was pretty big. It knocked some pictures off of my wall, but nothing too serious.
JVW (eabe68) — 5/17/2009 @ 8:46 pmIn Mission Viejo, it lasted about 3 seconds and was enough to get my daughter out of her bedroom to ask what it was.
Mike K (2cf494) — 5/17/2009 @ 8:47 pmLong one. Scary.
Vermont Neighbor (539e49) — 5/17/2009 @ 8:51 pmNothing felt in Altadena.
Alta Bob (28abe4) — 5/17/2009 @ 9:00 pmIn mid-Wilshire, some window and door-rattling, enough to make me look up. Didn’t feel like a 5 up here, though.
Tim McGarry (9fe080) — 5/17/2009 @ 9:06 pmSlight shaking in San Diego, near the stadium.
Brother Bradley J. Fikes (0ea407) — 5/17/2009 @ 9:06 pmThe first link in the Update (“Early report”) says the earthquake was NNE of Hawthorne CA, about mid-way between Hawthorne and Inglewood. Isn’t that near LAX?
DRJ (f55947) — 5/17/2009 @ 9:10 pmIsn’t that near LAX?
Very much so, yes.
Patterico (cc3b34) — 5/17/2009 @ 9:12 pmDidn’t feel anything on Chicago’s near South side. Hope that everyone is OK there.
carlitos (aa025a) — 5/17/2009 @ 9:19 pmThat was nothing I felt it in Santa Ana But it was barely anything my kids did’nt even feel it. nothing worth talking about really
Grace (a47707) — 5/17/2009 @ 9:21 pmDoesn’t seem like the type that hurt anyone, carlitos. Just a little shaker; a bit unnerving but nothing more.
Patterico (cc3b34) — 5/17/2009 @ 9:21 pmI didn’t feel it, but my family did– out here in the Valley.
MayBee (c50b9d) — 5/17/2009 @ 9:25 pmNo aftershock felt in Redondo Beach either. Must have been pretty small.
JVW (eabe68) — 5/17/2009 @ 9:27 pmOdd for an earthquake to be up to a level 5 and barely felt or noticed in the immediate area. Either the seismograph measured it incorrectly or it occurred very deep below the surface of the ground.
Mark (411533) — 5/17/2009 @ 9:28 pm#13
Reports put depth at eight miles, Mark. That’s shallow, but fairly typical of Southern California, I gather.
Quakes tend to focus their energy in some directions more than others. Judging from reports I’ve seen, this one was felt more strongly south of the epicenter.
Tim McGarry (9fe080) — 5/17/2009 @ 9:37 pmIt definitely felt like a 5 – or more – not a quick rolling wave. I haven’t felt the blood drop like this since Northridge.
Vermont Neighbor (539e49) — 5/17/2009 @ 9:38 pmOh yeah, believe me Mark, we felt it (I am about four or five miles from the epicenter). It was short and strong, but no aftershock.
JVW (eabe68) — 5/17/2009 @ 9:39 pmYou guys are warriors. I thought it was 6-7 seconds minimum.
Vermont Neighbor (539e49) — 5/17/2009 @ 9:44 pmCarlsbad, CA: gentle horizontal shaking for about 5 sec. Items on shelves rattled a bit. No big deal here, but it seems odd that we’d feel it more than people in Altadena and Santa Ana.
ExRat (d7355e) — 5/17/2009 @ 9:58 pmI was in Pasadena at the time. Nobody in the restaurant felt anything. My mother in Seal Beach got a good shaking, though.
Steverino (1b3695) — 5/17/2009 @ 10:00 pmSurf City (Huntington Beach) received a good shaking. My kids were screaming!
Hondo (9716a0) — 5/17/2009 @ 10:06 pmI was in Torrance at the time, and it was a pretty good jolt that seemed to last for 5 to 10 seconds.
Roger H. (f3e241) — 5/17/2009 @ 10:23 pmNorthern San Fernando Valley – I definitely felt it. Almost thought it was the “big one” again. Didn’t last that long, though.
My parents were in Anaheim at the time and they felt it as well.
wherestherum (d413fd) — 5/17/2009 @ 10:29 pmSE corner of the SFV: low warning rumble/shake, then fairly decent shake for long enough for us to start to worry, then it tapered down to a low jostle, an additional shake or two, then nada.
redc1c4 (9c4f4a) — 5/17/2009 @ 11:03 pmAt the time of the Northridge earthquake I lived in Hollywood. I remember being shaken awake at 4.31AM by the tremors and the screaming of a hysterical girl. I later realised, it was me that was screaming. In a manly way, of course.
Gazzer (206e15) — 5/17/2009 @ 11:36 pmHope everyone is OK in Southern California.
I am also in Redondo Beach, near the corner of Artesia and Aviation, and there was maybe 5 seconds of rumbling, a sharp jolt, which may have been something on the rood falling over, and then a few more seconds of rolling.
There were reports of damage at the movie theater at South Bay Galleria, which is less than a mile away. Broken glass on the floor, possibly due to a broken projector screen. Nobody hurt, at last report.
Gary Coleman (23bab2) — 5/18/2009 @ 12:33 amOcean front property in Arizona. Sorry, I couldn’t resist.
PatAZ (9d1bb3) — 5/18/2009 @ 7:16 amI live in Westchester, north of LAX and about 3 miles from the epicenter. Pretty good shake, but not (quite) enough to get us scurrying for cover.
The cats, however, did scurry for cover, which may tell you who the smarter ones are.
Kevin Murphy (0b2493) — 5/18/2009 @ 8:28 amVisiting relatives in Poway. It felt to me like a sudden jolt and that was it, like something slammed the walls of the house. Other people in the house felt some shaking lasting a couple seconds.
Andy (b60e3b) — 5/18/2009 @ 8:53 amVery sharp jolt and then a roll in PVE; thought it was at least a 5.5. Didn’t feel any aftershock.
LASue (e8a942) — 5/18/2009 @ 9:48 amQuake was on the Newport-Inglewood Fault which roughly parallels the coast all the way to San Diege.
AD - RtR/OS! (c02a3c) — 5/18/2009 @ 10:08 amHere in Downey it was a good shaker, and jumper (I hate those), though no damage that I’ve found so far.
Had just returned from a business trip, had unpacked and taken a shower, and was dressing – Well, thanks for the welcome-back!
Friends in the Santa Monica area reported a big shaker (that they are from Boston might skew their perception of an earthquake), in Del Mar reports of just a slight roller, another friend staying in Carona felt nothing – reinforcing the perception that most of the effects were along the orientation of the fault, NW to SE.
We did feel the strongest of the aftershocks here.
Completely missed it. I’ve been out here for more than 8 years and I’ve only felt on sizable quake (which is more than enough, thank you very much).
