2008 Weblog Awards

Filed under: Blogging Matters — Patterico @ 7:04 am

I learned about the 2008 Weblog Awards from a post written by our friend Dana. Dana correctly notes that “Patterico doesn’t campaign for these things” — mainly because such awards tend to be a function of traffic, and I tend to be pitted against blogs that are better trafficked than mine. I appear to be solidly in the middle of the pack this time around and can’t imagine the end result will be much different. As a result, this will likely be, if not the only time I mention this, at least one of very few times.

Still, it’s a compliment that someone thought enough of the site to nominate it, and I appreciate the nod from Sister Toldjah, who gave me her endorsement. She is running in the “Best Large Blog” category. Michelle Malkin, Ace, and Power Line are all running in the Best Conservative Blog category; I’m partial to both Ace and Michelle but ultimately will cast my vote for Michelle. (Sorry, Ace. Looks like you’re winning without my help anyway.) In a graphic depiction of how stupid this contest can be, Hot Air is losing to Andrew Sullivan in the Best Blog category. Ridiculous; go change that.

If you’re inclined to cast a vote for this blog, you can do so here.

  1. You can vote once every 24 hours until January 13. Vote early and often.

I would not recommend to anyone to vote *more often* by rebooting your modem to change your IP address and deleting the cookies from your browser. That would be … Democratic.

Just remember, everybody: nk is a lawyer from Chicago! 🙂 He knows of what he speaks.

The Dana has voted only once . . . today, anyway. (3e4784)

  3. Acorn-elect. January 20th. Program your tv sets! Eleventy

  4. Damn, Patterico. If you weren’t running against Ace, I’d vote for you (being a contributor over there sort of makes me obligated to vote for my benefactor). I realize that you’re in a spot where you’re not going to be in a position to win “Best Law Blog” (I’m going to bet on TVC for that award) even if you were nominated for that instead, but that doesn’t diminish your legal-related blogging. Too bad they didn’t make a sub-category of “Best Media Watchdog”. The Radio Equalizer might make a run at you, but in a just world you’d win that one going away.

Sullivan beating ANYONE for the “Best Blog” category is equivalent to Jack Murtha & Jane Fonda being unanimously elected as co-chairs of the American Legion.

You can’t beat the spamming coming from “Excitable Andy” and his minions, but you CAN make a difference in a race that’s a little further down the ticket: As “Best Pet Blog”, you should cast a vote for “F*** You, Penguin”. I hear on the grapevine that at least half of the cats featured on I Can Haz Cheezeburger (their biggest competitor for that award) are undocumented Canadian-born felines taking blogging exposure away from native-born felines.

(Just checking: it’s not blatant blogwhoring if you’re pimping a site you don’t have any involvement in, is it?)

  5. There is also a poll for best Middle East blog. I would like to see everyone vote for Michael Totten or Martin Kramer, both excellent. Juan Cole is dangerous and he is pushing a Hezbollah supporter, of all things.

    Mike K (f89cb3)

  6. Well, don’t I feel stupid. You’re not up against Ace, and I HAVE been voting for you. Just a mental hiccup there, move along people, nothing to see here. I got confused because I had to choose between you and Protein Wisdom, not between you and Ace. Well, they don’t call us “moron bloggers” for nothing, I guess.

Just curious – is it just me, or shouldn’t “Jesus’ General” be competing in the Best Military Blogs category? And “Bitch PhD”? Is she still in the league? I still think you need your own category instead of the generic “large blog”.

  7. Thus far our esteemed host is dead in the middle, running fifth, with 660 votes (four of which are mine! 🙂 ). However, I would very much like to see him move ahead of Pandagon, which is in second place, and not far out of first.

The Dana who has now voted twice today (556f76)

  8. Well, whaddya know; by using my daughter’s ‘puter, which has a different IP, I was able to vote again! 🙂

The Dana who has now voted thrice today (556f76)

  9. Dana,

While I appreciate the enthusiasm, I’m not sure that the rules permit one person to vote multiple times in a single day from different computers. In fact, I strongly suspect that’s verboten. If I’m right, you should wait a couple of days to vote again so that you’re voting only once per day.

  10. Rancho Patterico Verdes! Best in show and on the web.

IIRC not the first time you’ve done awesome animals. *saves for posterity* Nice aphorism too.

Went to your site…What, no weird blue seal? Funny post though.

  14. Thanks, noyk. That was actually a little bunny I found running around the Internet. So he’s in a cage over here now. I’m not his maker, just his handler. He’s on loan while we wait for results on this web thingy… blog win… PP. Vote!

    Vermont Neighbor (058354)

  15. Thank you, no one you know. That is not the Dana I thought I knew.

But you can and should, under the rules, vote once every twenty-four hours until voting closes around noon on the 13th.

nk who just knows dana as another guy from the neighborhood (ce2a15)

  16. VN, I’m not sure what it says about me but until you said it was a bunny, I absolutely couldn’t tell what it was!

    Dana (137151)

  17. Dana – I know, when I look at those web creations they either work or they don’t. I think I made this one up. But I’m not sure.

  22. Good! As long as we have that straight.

Now let’s move on to why you felt a need to confess in public.

nk who believes that confession may be good for the soul but is very bad for your trial strategy (ce2a15)

  23. Just voted again today…

    Beatin’ PW, I see…Go Patterico!

    no one you know (1ebbb1)

  24. Meh. The libs are running away with it.

    Patterico (cc3b34)

  25. You know, I just checked the traffic of “Bitch, PhD” and it’s much lower than mine. There must be some big site that is promoting the libs in this race. (I heard Wonkette was steering people to libs in various races, but couldn’t find any evidence of their making a recommendation in mine.)

    Patterico (cc3b34)

  26. How is it possible that Andrew Sullivan is still ahead of Hot Air? I’ve been faithfully voting against him!

    Daan (137151)

  27. He pimps it every second he can and makes it seem important. Hot Air mostly ignores it.
