New York Times Gets Punked
[Guest post by DRJ]
Oops:
“The New York Times admitted Monday it published a fake letter purportedly from the mayor of Paris criticizing Caroline Kennedy’s Senate bid as “appalling” and “not very democratic.”
The letter and the Times‘ correction are here. The letter was received via email. The Times edited the letter and returned it to the sender for approval, but it was published without verification even though no response was received.
I get outlandish emails every day but I check their accuracy before I decide whether to post. I guess I wouldn’t have to go to all the trouble if I worked for the New York Times.

Remind me…
What was the reaction of the NYT when Palin got “pranked”?

Yeah, but you’re a guest blogger on a conservative political blog. They are a 150+ year-old major enterprise reaching millions and helping to shape public opinion.
Oh wait, that’s an argument for why they ought to check these sorts of things more carefully, isn’t it?

Perfect Sense (9d1b08) — 12/22/2008 @ 2:23 pmAnd the NYSlimes smeared Gov Palin because of those two radio comedians (sic) who punked her and her staff? Wonder if they’ll take their snarky comments back now? Won’t hold my breath.

Another Drew (83402d) — 12/22/2008 @ 2:38 pmOff topic, (and I especially enjoy the NYTs getting punked) but this is the aniversary so what the heck. When you reach into that Christmas bowl of nuts this year, think of this…
Joe (dcebbd) — 12/22/2008 @ 2:41 pmIt’s very obvious what the problem is. The problem is that they have too many staffers sitting home in their pajamas working out their spleens on the internet.
Hey, maybe they could start up a pajamas media group of romething? 😛
GM Roper (85dcd7) — 12/22/2008 @ 2:53 pmInspector Sullivan hard on the case of Sarah Palin!
New York Times getting punked? Well that does not get Inspector Sullivan’s hormones flowing!

Amphipolis (e6b868) — 12/22/2008 @ 4:43 pmAs DRJ noted, we all get tons of e-mail every day; fortunately the spam filter usually catches the ones for Rogaine (how do they know this?).
You think if we punked them with a letter from Nicholas Sarközy praising the benefits of Viagra — a word which will probably throw this into the moderation queue — that the Times will publish it? 🙂

New York Times….Punked! | Political Byline (e78bc3) — 12/22/2008 @ 6:44 pmMaybe Patterico could write a post wherein he reveals the secret of discovering from where an email originates.
I hear it’s pretty tricky business.

Another Drew (83402d) — 12/22/2008 @ 7:48 pmMaybe the NY Times is getting punked another way, too Or at least the publisher might be. Maybe this is why she dropped her married name. Wow, no wonder she isn’t answering questions.
