Larry Elder’s Last Day is Today

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 9:40 am

Via L.A. Observed we learn that the local radio talk show host is making today his last day at KABC.

He said earlier in the week that he had a big announcement coming yesterday, but I missed it. And I will miss him.

I wonder why he’s doing this.

  1. Larry Elder has long been one of my favorites. Good luck, Mr. Elder, in wherever life takes you.

  2. What is going on? KABC screwing with the hosts again?

    PCD (7fe637)

  3. “I wonder why he’s doing this.”

Probably because KABC is overpaying him, and KABC’s parent company has one foot in its economic grave. Not to mention that, Rush’s contract notwithstanding, conservative talk radio’s immediate future isn’t that great.

  4. conservative talk radio’s immediate future isn’t that great.

Unless you mean the Fairness Doctrine, I have no idea where you are getting this idea…

At the least, it’s future is far brighter than blatantly liberal talk radio…

  5. Scott – Brad S speaks on behalf of all true Republicans, who blindly follow any position held by their leaders.

    JD (6a82b7)

  6. Ah, I see.

This is why I’m not a Republican… I’d rather be tossed into the same pile as Ron Paul than with people like Brad S.

    Scott Jacobs (a1c284)

  7. Larry will be missed. I used to love his disagreements with black liberals over which political party has done more for minorities in America.

“Facts to a liberal are like kyptonite to Superman”

    Far well, Larry

  8. BAILING OUT THE UAW IS A POSITIVE CONSERVATIVE POSITION !!!!!!!!!!eleventy11!

    JD (6a82b7)

  9. Yes, JD, bailing out the UAW is a CONSERVATIVE position. Much like Reagan enacting tariffs on software/computer manufacturers during the ’80s was a conservative position. And aren’t you thankful he did that?

    Brad S (9f6740)

  10. Ah, that’s a shame. Larry was a favorite for my wife and I when we lived in LA. I’m sure he’ll resurface somewhere.

    CW Desiato (614aa7)

  11. maybe he’s moving to Illinois to become the next Senator?

  12. Larry will definately be missed. I always thought of him as one of the “adults” of talk radio as opposed to shock jocks and others that will say or do just about anything to get ratings. Larry has consistently been the voice of reason, especially when the discussion topics tend to evoke highly emotional responses.

I wish him all of the best in his future endeavors. Hopefully he will still be writing his columns.

  13. conservative talk radio’s immediate future isn’t that great.

This is, what, the fifteenth eminent demise of conservative talk radio?

    Rob Crawford (04f50f)

  14. KABC Radio is owned by Disney and I don’t think they have one foot in the economic grave.

    jwarner (0a2a75)

  15. jwarner – Brad S is not really all that keen on facts.

Yes, JD, bailing out the UAW is a CONSERVATIVE position.

You can claim that every day of the week, and twice on Sunday, but that will not make it true.

    JD (6a82b7)

  16. I liked Larry–but I loved his mother! She was a great lady with strong opinions formed of a lifetime of experience. I wish Larry well in whatever he does.

Now he’s being replaced in the time slot by Al Rantel–I don’t know that the two of them were/are that much different in their general outlook on things.

    Mike Myers (31af82)

  17. He was this liberal’s favorite right-leaning talk-show host, respectful in disagreement and entertaining at all times. I even mostly enjoyed the pro-gun documentary film he produced.

Maybe that one-off special he did for Fox News a while back got picked up for a series?

    LYT (92d400)

  18. We gave up on Larry when he refused to look deep into the Ramos and Compian railroading, swallowing Johnny Sutton’s tripe.

    Paul Albers (06d9a0)

  19. Not to mention that, Rush’s contract notwithstanding, conservative talk radio’s immediate future isn’t that great.

This statement is breathtaking in it’s wanton stupidity – tell us, oh great radio sage, whom among the radio conservative talk show hosts are in trouble today? Hannity? Brooks & Dunn? The Captain and Tennille?

    Dmac (e30284)

  20. I heard him say something about this yesterday but didn’t hear the announcement, itself. He has had an ongoing issue with baseball on KABC which preempts the last hours of his show during baseball season. For that reason I think he has a slot on satellite radio. I’ve also noticed that he went back to the KABC phone number for call-ins. He mentioned running for office but implied he can’t afford it. I’ll be interested to see what he does.

    Mike K (ee3203)

  21. Dmac, I think this will be another great time for conservative talk. Obama will provide a huge amount of material.

Rush Limbaugh took off when Clinton was elected. O’Reilly is giving up his slot because he says he doesn’t have enough time. The irony is that KABC lost Dennis Prager years ago because they refused to let him syndicate, telling him that they wanted a local show. Now, they have nothing but the national syndicated shows and Dennis is doing fine on a competitor station. I would not count on the program director at KABC for good judgement.

    Mike K (ee3203)

  22. Mike, you better believe that Roger Ailes is loving every minute of this – the next four years will only make FoxNews stronger, albeit their best talent (Brit Hume is basically retiring after this year). I don’t have much interest in their other “talent.”

    Dmac (e30284)

  23. Re #14: KABC is no longer owned by the Walt Disney Company. About a year ago, ABC sold their radio station group to Citadel Broadcasting, including KABC, KLOS, WABC, WLS, KGO and others. Since then, Citadel has tanked, its stock now trades well under $1 and it may soon be delisted from the stock exchange.

I’ve been lucky enough to meet and speak with Larry a few times when he appeared on a TV show where I work. He is a true gentleman and a great talent. I can’t imagine he’ll be off the air very long.

    Mike W (17c566)

  24. I’m listening to the final broadcast right now. It’s striking how much KRLA talent he is having on to discuss his departure. Prager said that Larry will hear from Larry again soon. Any chance he is simply jumping ship to another station?

  25. I will miss him a lot. John & Ken give me a headache and to contrast Elder’s cool smarts and always courteous manner when interacting with callers to their loutish loud mouth aggression, well, it will certainly be a big loss for many of us on the drive home.

    Dana (79a78b)

  26. Dam#!Dam#!Dam#!Dam#!Dam#!!!!

I really liked this guy.I was pissed when they took
him and Tammy Bruce off of Sirus.

I hope he pop’s up somewhere else so I can tune in.

    GOOD LUCK LARRY!!

    Baxter Greene (8035ae)

  27. well…that is capitalism for you

larry should be rejoicing…its the system at its best

his ratings sucked…ad revenue was down…so he got shit canned

    goodbye to the house negro

hey larry…ive got some yard work for you to do

    uncle joe mccarthy (1a4bd8)

  28. It took a while, but the haters always show up.
