  2. Perdigao pleaded guilty in October to fraud and money laundering charges and awaits sentencing in February.

Would someone please explain to me why he “pleaded” instead of pled guilty? Or is my understanding of the english language that bad?

  3. I still think there might have been merit to some of his story and I would have liked to see him have his day in court.

Leo – I think it’s primarily seen in the legal field like other Old English phrases such as “Comes Now” and “without Day.”

  4. DRJ – You may be correct in your assessment. My English teacher was not of the legal profession. However, my 1956 New Practical Standard Dictionary of the English Language by Funk & Wagnalls (yes, that dates me) denotes PLED as: “Past tense and past participle of PLEAD.” Also, if it is already the past participle then it does not need to end in -d, -ed, -en, etc.

There is a place for “pleaded” in the English language. I just don’t think that the referenced sentence is the proper place for it. Besides all that, to me it just reads and sounds better.
