I also received the following email this evening that is making the rounds of the fan sites for teams 3-25:
NOTE: I received this from a WWII vet and I don’t intend this to in any way trivialize what happened on this day in history. The way I see it, not only were these vets part of the Greatest Generation, they have a pretty good sense of humor, too.
DRJ (b4db3a) — 12/7/2008 @ 6:45 pmUT lost only barely, and after a long session of very tough games. Yeah, they lost to Texas Tech, but that’s a crazy team that played excellently that day (and they didn’t beat UT badly).
We beat OU, and frankly, it’s just because we didn’t beat them lately that we’re not ranked better.
Oh well. UT has 8 or 9 sports ranked in the top ten nationally and it’s a great school in general. That’ll have to do.
Juan (4cdfb7) — 12/7/2008 @ 11:32 pmThe only consolation for us UT fans is, the Horns will totally crush Ohio State, while Florida will just manage to beat OU in a close game.
The robots and biased coaches and sports writers will declare Florida the champs of the season, while college football fans will argue for years what would have happened if Florida actually had to play Texas this season before claiming No. 1 status.
45-35!
Aplomb (b6fba6) — 12/7/2008 @ 11:48 pmAny way you look at it, USC got screwed.
PCD (7fe637) — 12/8/2008 @ 5:18 amTo everyone clamoring for a playoff……we could end up with #6 Utah v. # 8 Penn State in the final – that would be a terrific national championship game, don’t you think?
Paul (f708d1) — 12/8/2008 @ 7:26 amWow – Boise State really got the shaft. After that memorable bowl game with the staue of liberty play, I thought they would get more love in an undefeated season. They deserve a matchup with Texas Tech more than Ole Miss does.
rhodeymark (ae2b2a) — 12/8/2008 @ 7:42 amThe Big 12 South had a three way tie. Texas beat OU 45-35 then lost to Texas Tech 39-33. OU beat Tech 65-21. Head to heads don’t matter. Allowing the BCS standing to break a tie is not a good method of selecting teams for the Conference championship game. The Big 12 should have sent their two best teams – OU and Texas. IMHO, without the Dallas refs, Oklahoma would have creamed Texas. By last weekend, OU had separated from the pack, setting NCAA records in points and touchdowns.
Stoops is smart. He gamed the BCS, knowing that the computers would weigh OU’s strength of schedule and blow out games heavier than UT’s. Look at the final poll. OU beat #12 Cincy, #8 Texas Tech, #11 TCU, #13 Okla St and #25 Missouri.
Texas also played #25 Mizzou and #13 OSU, but they lost to #8 Texas Tech. They don’t get style points for beating UTEP, Rice and Florida Atlantic.
Florida is a great team, but they have not played a schedule to match OU’s. The top 25 teams they played wound up as #4 Alabama, #16 Georgia and #20 Mississippi (a game they lost at home). Still, I’m looking forward to watching my 52″ plasma a lot between now and 8 January.
arch (421638) — 12/8/2008 @ 8:39 amI’d have liked to see Texas play Alabama in the postseason. Ohio State simply isn’t worthy enough for the Horns, nor Utah for the Tide. Ah, well…
sdferr (2a37e4) — 12/8/2008 @ 9:23 amI wasn’t going to bring this up, but since I live in the Birmingham area and I’m sick to death of “Roll Tide”, who did Alabama play to justify a top 10 ranking?
Until #2 Florida beat them, the Tide had only beaten Georgia and Mississippi who wound up ranked at #15 or below. Of their 13 opponents, 7 had losing records. Kentucky was 6-6 and Bama came from behind to beat them 17-14 at home.
Texas, Texas Tech, Penn State or Southern Cal would crush Alabama. I would not be surprised if Utah beat the Crimson Tide.
arch (421638) — 12/8/2008 @ 10:02 amSeven bowl games after Jan. 1?! That’s ridiculous!
kwo (20c20f) — 12/8/2008 @ 12:44 pmThe quality of the loss and whether it was home/away should have played a larger role in the selection of the National Championship contestants.
Personally, I would have preferred to see Oklahoma and Texas, on a truly neutral field, or given Missouri’s spot in the Big 12 title game to Texas, but none of that is possible. The Big 12 South has more quality than any full conference in the country.
JD (059bab) — 12/8/2008 @ 12:46 pmOklahoma deserves to be #1. Live with it UT. You’re probably playing a stronger opponent (OSU) than Oklahoma. There are six Big 12 teams in the top 25. The SEC sucks.
