Dean Barnett (1967-2008)

Blogger, Hugh Hewitt stand-in, and Weekly Standard contributor Dean Barnett died today, presumably due to complications from cystic fibrosis.

A few years ago, he posted a column I enjoyed so much that I emailed him and told him I might memorize it to use in talking to my friends – “with full attribution, of course.” I had to laugh at his response: “Eh – steal it as your own. Stun them with your erudition!”

He was 41 and I know he fought hard to the end. RIP and condolences to his family.

  1. A good man with a distinctive voice for radio. Always liked it when he filled in for Hugh.

  6. This adds to a lousy week.

  7. A tragedy. Though I disagreed with him often, he was always courteous, polite and cheerful to a fault–a genuinely generous and honest character. Hell, even Greenwald thought highly of him.

He will be missed. My thoughts are with his family.

  8. My best wishes to his family. I always enjoyed his columns, he was certainly a very good guy and will be much missed among us bloggers, as among many others, I am sure.

  11. He will be sorely missed. He was a steady voice in the maelstrom of politics today.

    Rest In Peace!

  12. OT. So…patterico.com is forwarding here? I didn’t see any mention of this in prior posts. That’s progress, right?

  13. It won’t for me. Apparently it forwards for some people or at some times, but not others.

  14. My God, that’s horrible.

    Best wishes to his family.

  18. I’m very sad to hear of Dean’s passing.
He had an unmistakable voice on the radio and I really enjoyed listening to him when he subbed for Hugh.

The world is a worse place without Dean Barnett in it.

    RIP Dean (Chowdah)…

  19. It’s not much of a positive comment but cystic fibrosis used to result in death at age 12 or 13. Now the people with CF live to Dean’s age. The really bad cases are getting lung transplants. Dean was probably 10 years too soon.

  20. The man that coined the word ‘beclowned’ is ‘A-Ok’ in my book.

    Godspeed Dean.

  21. DRJ,

Which column are you referring to? He wrote so many good ones.

  22. Dean Barnett fought the good fight.

I didn’t realize how dedicated he was until I read that Cystic Fibrosis sufferers have an average life expectancy of 28-30.

Dean was 41. That means he kept a terrific attitude and fought for what he knew was right even with a death sentence on his head and was living on borrowed time.

How many of us would do this?

My respect for him — while always high — has risen greatly in this time of sadness.

  23. SAZMD,

I agree he wrote many good columns but I’m not sure which one I wrote him about. I still have his emailed response and it was dated in Fall 2006, so it was sometime before that.

  24. DRJ, try this one and see if it affected you as much as I was.
