McCain Supporter Attacked in Pittsburgh (Updated x3: A Hoax)

Pittsburgh-area press report a 20-year-old Texas woman working at a campaign call center was robbed at knife-point as she got money at an ATM last night in Pittsburgh Bloomfield. She claimed that, after seeing a McCain bumper sticker on her car, the robber beat her and used his knife to mark[ed] a B on her face.
Gateway Pundit has a photo of the victim and a round-up of local news links.
EDIT: Hot Air has continuing updates and Phyllis Chesler has more, including an attack on an Obama supporter.
UPDATE 1: TMZ reports that Pittsburgh law enforcement expressed skepticism about the validity of this incident and Michelle Malkin agrees. Meanwhile, Ace thinks the position of the B isn’t reason enough to doubt this story.
UPDATE 2 – An update from Ed Morrissey at Hot Air:
“Update VII: I spoke with two executives at the College Republicans on the record about this story. Charlie Smith, the National Chair, and Ethan Eilon, the Executive Director, both say the photo is legitimate and that it came from [*name redacted by DRJ*], the victim in this case. The attack began at 8:50 pm ET and [**] called the police at 9:30 PM ET. Initially, she was robbed, ran away after the robbery, and the robber followed her to her car. At that point, he became enraged at the bumper sticker and began beating her and scratched the ‘B’ into her face. [**] went to the hospital early this morning after initially refusing medical attention last night, and had an MRI and/or a CAT scan. Doctors believe her cheek will heal fully.
Eilon spoke with her personally today about the incident and confirmed the above with me. He first met [**] in June, when she came to DC for training with the College Republicans. She works for them as a contract employee. She does not work for the McCain campaign. Both Eilon and Smith expressed revulsion over an attack on a young woman just getting involved in politics, but they consider this the act of a lone lunatic.
I’m not going to blame people for keeping a healthy skepticism on this case, but so far, the two media reports appear to check out.”
UPDATE 3: KDKA reports the campaign worker has recanted and her injuries were self-inflicted. What a foolish thing to do.

Our country needs more people to TAKE A STAND and say that mugging and battering people is bad. Why aren’t we condemning this man? There just aren’t enough people admitting that muggings and assaults are wrong these days.

I am a MCCain/Palin supporter, but this story sounds weird. I would hope that some dumb person wouldn’t try to create a situation that would only blow up in our (republicans) faces and be used against us later (or is SHE the plant?). Not receiving treatment and the B is backwards like you would write if you were just writing a ‘B’ on your face without looking and not realizing that someone else writing it would make it in the other direction???

Frankly, I can see why would be some anger among Obama supporters against the McCain campaign right now — calling your candidate a terrorist and a muslim and a communist probably starts to wear on these people after a while. But that’s the path the McCain campaign has chosen, or been forced into by its base.
So it wouldn’t surprise me if this were real — the ignorant Republicans who are frothing at the mouth thinking Obama is the antichrist communist Osama bin Ladenn/Saddam Hussein (thanks to the efforts of Hannity/Rush et al) are probably mirrored by a bunch of ignorant Democrats who now think McCain is a madman who will say absolutely anything, no matter how untrue, in order to terrify the American public into voting for him.

When I followed the link to Gateway Pundit for the photograph of the alleged victim, I was hoping I wouldn’t see what I thought I might see, and that is a backwards “B.”

Back in 2001, when I read a wire story about a black woman who said she was yanked off the side of the road by a band of rednecks in a pickup, sexually assaulted, and had “KKK” carved in her chest, I posted the article in a Free Republic thread and subtitled it, “(IMHO, She’s Lying, & You Heard It Here First)”.
I was right. About a week later — September 4, 2001 — she confessed to carving the “KKK” herself. And, yes, it was carved backwards. The woman, who was not identified, was out with someone she shouldn’t have been out with late at night, and to cover her tracks with her significant other, she made up the story. About a year earlier, a gay man was in the same situation and reported a similar non-existent hate crime.
If I was a top GOP official in Pennsylvania, I would demand a private audience with the “victim,” and lay down the law in a calm and cool voice:

If it’s real, I’m sorry for her. If it’s not, she’s done harm. That harm could get a lot worse if anyone else participates in a coverup.
Someone needs to have a real talk with this young woman and get in front of this.
Look at all of it:
1. It was Some Black Guy. Some Black Guy killed Charles Stuart‘s wife. Some Black Guy killed Susan Smith’s kids. Some Puerto Rican guy took Butters.
2. This is not how robbers work. They don’t steal your stuff then follow you around as a general rule. If you’re planning a rape-robbery, you don’t rob first then follow her to her car.
3. Robbers do not think, “My goodness, Barack Obama’s redistribution of wealth is superior to John McCain’s more moderate plans; now that I see a bumper sticker, I am enraged.” Those in the robbery business are seldom seriously affected by federal elections, and don’t tend to be registered voters.
4. Reversed or upside-down gently placed “B” is what the robber decides? I’ve never heard of or seen a legit case like this, and I’ve heard of many that aren’t legit.
There’s more to this that rings false, but that’s a start. If she’s caught in a hoax, the local campaign should issue an apology to pretty much all human beings affected by this, even though it was just one confused person.
I want to make clear: I could be wrong. That isn’t the way to bet, but I could be wrong.

This is a good point but I don’t like the lack of ATM camera evidence and declining medical attention. I would stay away from this.

But to be perfectly honest, this whole summer, I have found alot of black people to be incredibly hostile towards white people!
Like yesterday, I went into the big grocery store in town. There was this older black woman, walking around in the store… she seem civil enough..but she did not seem disabled in any way.. but when I after I got out of the store after buying my groceries. and walked by her, she started to put her grocery cart right into a handicapped space when there was a place to put the shopping carts which was directly across from her car. When I pointed that out… where the carts could be put, you should of seen how hateful and rude she was to me!
She just shouted at me, this is where the cart belongs!
So nice… how respecful some black people are towards the handicapped!
Wow.. like moving your cart another 10 feet so some poor handicapped person could park there was such an effort!
BTW, there was hardly no handicapped spaces available in the whole parking lot!.
What is up with this??? I think that instead of Obama bring the races together, he’s going to be the impetus that causes massive racial tensions and lots of hate crimes against whites.
