Kirsten Powers: The Media’s “Incredible Bias”

[Guest post by DRJ]

Democratic pundit Kirsten Powers’ article in the New York Post looks at the media double-standard when it comes to Joe Biden and Sarah Palin, beginning with Biden’s claim that Obama’s election could cause an international incident:

The outakes of [Biden’s] Sunday remarks don’t begin to capture the magnitude of what he said. After warning the crowd that there would be some sort of international incident – Biden could think of four or five scenarios – he told the donors: “We’re gonna need you to use your influence, your influence within the community, to stand with him. Because it’s not gonna be apparent initially, it’s not gonna be apparent that we’re right.”

What does that mean? Obama’s election would provoke an international incident because of his inexperience and even Obama’s biggest supporters won’t be reassured by his response?”

As if that weren’t enough, Biden also raised concerns about Obama’s ability to deal with economic issues:

“Then there were Biden’s predictions on the economy: “I promise you, you all are gonna be sitting here a year from now going, ‘Oh my God, why are they there in the polls? . . . Why is this thing so tough? . . . I’m asking you now, be prepared to stick with us. Remember the faith you had at this point, because you’re going to have to reinforce us.

“There are gonna be a lot of you who want to go, ‘Whoa, wait a minute, yo, whoa, whoa, I don’t know about that decision.’ ”

Biden is teling [sic] us that, at a time when Americans need to feel confidence in their government, they will be going “Oh my God.” Not a great message.

Needless to say, if Sarah Palin said this about a McCain administration, the media world would be exploding.”

Powers sees this as media bias where Republicans are always dumb and Democrats are always given the benefit of the doubt. It reminds me of modern TV sitcoms, with Republicans cast as the dumb dads and Democrats as the brilliant or perfect moms.

Too bad there aren’t more Democrats in the media who can be as thoughtful as Powers was in this article.

  1. Seriously? In light of what the bloviating Biden blathered, how on earth could the media not assign dumb to the big D after his name. What an incoherent rant…

I have come to respect the even-handedness of Kirstin Powers during this campaign season. She has written several smart pieces taking to task the media and its relentless and desperate attacks of her.

  2. All day I tried to log on to this blog. I was directed to some parking site or some thing which would not allow me to find Patterico. That was a different computer than the one I am using now. I hope the problem is solved. Funny Kirsten notices something that was obvious from the start of the primaries. The media picked Obama from the start.

  3. The disturbing thing is realizing he was briefed as part of the transition team just before this.

And he can’t keep his mouth shut for a day.

  4. If the Dems don’t want to suffer the anguish that Slow-Joe is predicting for them, all they have to do is vote McCain/Palin, and that problem will be solved.

  5. Ms. Powers’ column is great, but it only scratches the surface. Biden doesn’t even know which article in the Constitution set up the legislative branch, and which set up the executive branch.

As dads go, so goes the Dad Party.

  7. I used to think Biden was stupid. Now I’ve decided he is in a permanent state of brain aneurism. About the only positive of a potential Obama presidency is the continued hilarity ensuing from the veep – except that Biden really would be stashed away in a secure, undisclosed location probably for the entire term. And can anyone imagine the Drive-Bys leaving alone any Republican candidate for pres. or veep who had had *2* brain aneurisms??? Please!

OT, all my computers go straight to sedoparking instead of Patterico. I have to use the IP address Glenn provided or I can no longer get here. Really annoying…

You’d think Obama’s media adulators like Power Buttocks Sullivan or O’s acorn thugs would be giving Powers a proctology exam by now for her criticisms. Have to wonder what effect the Puma crowd might yet have. Here in Wexler’s district the venom directed against Palin is quite vicious, especially from all the JAPS (and I don’t mean orientals, think from NY chip-on-the shoulder biddies). Compare O’s inexperience and they go ballistic.

  10. There is ample evidence to suggest that Joe Biden may be suffering from bi-polar disorder. Such grandiosity! This needs to be investigated as it is a scary prospect for a would-be President. They talk about Palin…..

  11. This is all part of the conviction by the media that salvation for all of America’s sins lies with electing Obama. What happens after that is not important. These are people who think terrorism is a bumper sticker. Congressmen have no economic sophistication. They think that passing a law will make the economy do what they want. Barney Frank says to forget about deficits and spend, spend, spend. Then, he says, we can go back and tax the rich to get the money back. Of course, by that time the rich, the real rich, will have their money offshore. The Depression was prolonged by a “capital strike” in response to Roosevelt’s actions. The same is a real prospect with Obama.

Plus Roosevelt had no concerns with foreign countries until 1938. Obama doesn’t have that luxury.

Democrats, both those who observe her comments and those who pay her to produce them, will be throwing Kirsten Powers under the bus shortly. She’s spewing a heresy by wondering if the media is engaged in double standard or any other form of bias.
    .
Or, she may have an epiphany similar to the one that rocked Tammy Bruce, and disassociate herself from the pack of liars before they do the same to her. “You can’t fire me, I quit.”

Here’s a Reason article about it.

I always thought she was on KABC rather than KFI. I used to scream at her on Saturdays driving to gigs on the westside. Maybe she was on both.

  16. Biden’s rhetoric would be truly frightening if it wasn’t emanating from the mouth of Joe Biden. Then again, maybe it is. The claim that we must, in so many words, blindly support the “Glorious Leader” in His hour of tribulation smacks of Nazi-like fear-mongering propaganda. Der Fuhrer (Obama) has become more important than the country is what Joe Biden is actually saying. This has always been the song of the Left, which is to say: “aristocratic”. Joe would have been great closing entertainment in the Berlin bunker during April of 1945. SIEG OBAMA,

  18. 15, 18, I remember Tammy being on KFI and so strident and partisan that when she had Rep. William Dannemeyer on, she couldn’t stand the supportive calls he was getting, so she hung up on 43 callers and called a gay activist friend of hers to pose as a random CALLER TO the show.

  24. Powerlineblog has a good story about how the Obama campaign has no problem with processing illegal contributions. There are certain protocols to follow when processing credit card charges. A few people experimented with giving bogus names and addresses along with a credit card number. Donations were attempted with the Obama and the McCain campaigns. McCain’s rejected them outright. Obama’s thanked them for the $$$. No vetting at all. It was mentioned that it was really a good thing that McCain’s people passed the test because otherwise the NY Times and others would have a field day revealing the illegal money going to McCain. What will we hear about the Obama dirty money? …crickets. One lady gave O over $200,000 on her credit card and termed it an “error”.

This latest column is no surprise, and not at all unexpected. She gets paid to write nothing but variants of the “I’m a Democrat, but…” column, so the leftosphere will give this a collective shrug.

Re Tammy.. she has a brusque side for sure. But she does a good job with issues-oriented, in-your-face talk.

And the setup calls are not uncommon. Sometimes they’re undetectable.

    Vermont Neighbor (c91cfe)

  28. jpe,

Then you’re saying Powers slants the news for profit? I think she’s telling the truth as she sees it but let’s assume you’re correct. Is slanting the news for profit worse than slanting the news to promote an ideological agenda as Evan Thomas suggested the media did in 2004?

  29. You know there are assclowns on the left who sincerely believe that Big media is in the tank for McCain and Bush. Got some spam today from what I assume is another knee jerk fever swamp special interest group. They claim to especially focus on teh nevironment and decry media’s failure to provide quality journalism and silencing of independent voices. Yeah, right. Like Obama’s retards themselves are not seeking to silence people at any cost? Anyway their link is http://www.alternet.org Maybe O can throw a few billion their way to ensure free speech for liberals only?

  30. 30 IMHO another media organ devoted to Obama. Oh my god, Norm Coleman is picking on Assh*le Franken with McCain type smear tactics and as the GOP bitches about ACORN, it is Rethuglicans who are suppressing the vote? And so on ad nauseum.
