Liar Watch: Biden on Obama Meeting with Ahmadinejad

Joe Biden in last night’s debate:

Can I clarify this? This is simply not true about Barack Obama. He did not say sit down with Ahmadinejad.

The New York Times, May 29, 2008:

Would you be willing to meet separately, without precondition, during the first year of your administration, in Washington or anywhere else, with the leaders of Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba and North Korea in order to bridge the gap that divides our countries?” asked Stephen Sixta, a video producer who submitted the question for the CNN/YouTube Democratic debate.

Mr. Obama, the first candidate to respond, answered, “I would.”

Several aides immediately thought it was a mistake and sought to dial back his answer. But on a conference call the morning after the debate, Mr. Obama told his advisers that he had meant what he said and thought the answer crystallized how he differed from his rivals.

Just so the fact-checkers don’t miss that.

  1. Palin had that intangible. She had a certain advantage just like JFK did in his debate with Nixon.

I will say that Joe had the Botok advantage.

  2. I thought that there were several other lies, fabrications and gross distortions spewed by OBiden as well. #1 “We’d reduce the taxes on 95% of Americans.” Well, 40% of Americans pay no Income Tax already, so how Joe, do you plan on reducing the Income Taxes on that 40%? #2 Mr. Obama warned about the economic crisis 2 years ago.” In his 3 short years in the Senate, OBamessiah racked up the second largest donations from Fannie Mae, has Franklin Raines as an Economic Advisor and had Johnson heading his V.P. Search Team. #3 “The economic policies of this (Bush) administration over the past eight years caused this crisis.” BULLSHIT JOE!!! This crisis had its genesis in JImmy Carter’s Community Redevelopment Act of 1977, then it was bumped up by Clinton in 1993 and then bumped up even more by Clinton and his team in 1999. Bush called for changes in the Fannie Mae/Feddie Mac in 2003 and in 2005 and it was the Freakin DEMOCRATS who opposed any additional regulation claiming that there was no problem with them! Hello Joe, anybody home?

Those are just a few off the top of my head, it might be neat to compile a complete list of OBiden’s lies, untruths, distortion and fabrications, I bet it would be a long one. Don’t get me wrong, OBiden did what he needed to do: try to balme it all on Bush and then tie McCain to Bush, it’s just all bullshit.

BTW I thought Palin did a very respectable job, no major gaffes, was sincere, direct and forthcoming and, I believe, she may have really helped herself and more importantly McCain by her performance. I thought she was consistent and hit base hit after base hit, never cranking a huge “Home Run” but nevertheless battled toe to toe with a guy with 30+ years of experience in politics. If she can do that after five weeks, just think what she’ll be able to do come January 20th. BTW I thought Ifill was right down the middle,, no bias at all from her. My $.02.

  3. Looking at the pols – I think a better objective is to prevent the massive expansion of socialism of the obama administration. (somewhat similar to the opposition during the clintion administration)
However, looking at the shifting of the pols since the financial crisis started emerging a few weeks ago, Obama may have huge coattails which will sweep in a socialist democratic congress.

  4. All those years in Washington have made it so those lies just slide out and it seems no one cares in the media. Just another glibly delivered lie.
That is why Biden can go into coal country and tell them he’s one of them and on their side, but go inot a group of enviromentalists and hold their hand, look in their eye and tell them the opposite.
Biden and Obama happily “support” issues like clean coal, nuclear power, drilling…. as long as they are done “right” which is weaseling lying that allows them to play both sides.
    Jerks.
Straight talk is what I want. Palin may mangle things and need help getting up to speed on Washington affairs, but she’s honest and seems principled in that down home, small town way.

Not that the media understands; or even respects honesty. they find it disconcerting enough that they need to send legions of operatives to Wasilla to find everyone who has a grudge or a negative opinion and give those people a line in print being critical of some piece of personal minutae.

I went to Factcheck. org and saw their “palin rape kit” lie has gone unrevised. I think that confirms that the media can’t handle honesty.

  5. I only came up with three off the top of my head, here’s a list of 14, yeah, fourtfrikinteen that the McCain campaign came up with:

    1. TAX VOTE: Biden said McCain voted “the exact same way” as Obama to increase taxes on Americans earning just $42,000, but McCain DID NOT VOTE THAT WAY.

    2. AHMEDINIJAD MEETING: Joe Biden lied when he said that Barack Obama never said that he would sit down unconditionally with Mahmoud Ahmedinijad of Iran. Barack Obama did say specifically, and Joe Biden attacked him for it.

    3. OFFSHORE OIL DRILLING: Biden said, “Drill we must.” But Biden has opposed offshore drilling and even compared offshore drilling to “raping” the Outer Continental Shelf.”

    4. TROOP FUNDING: Joe Biden lied when he indicated that John McCain and Barack Obama voted the same way against funding the troops in the field. John McCain opposed a bill that included a timeline, that the President of the United States had already said he would veto regardless of it’s passage.

    5. OPPOSING CLEAN COAL: Biden says he’s always been for clean coal, but he just told a voter that he is against clean coal and any new coal plants in America and has a record of voting against clean coal and coal in the U.S. Senate.

    6. ALERNATIVE ENERGY VOTES: According to FactCheck.org, Biden is exaggerating and overstating John McCain’s record voting for alternative energy when he says he voted against it 23 times.

    7. HEALTH INSURANCE: Biden falsely said McCain will raise taxes on people’s health insurance coverage — they get a tax credit to offset any tax hike. Independent fact checkers have confirmed this attack is false

    8. OIL TAXES: Biden falsely said Palin supported a windfall profits tax in Alaska — she reformed the state tax and revenue system, it’s not a windfall profits tax.

    9. AFGHANISTAN / GEN. MCKIERNAN COMMENTS: Biden said that top military commander in Iraq said the principles of the surge could not be applied to Afghanistan, but the commander of NATO’s International Security Assistance Force Gen. David D. McKiernan said that there were principles of the surge strategy, including working with tribes, that could be applied in Afghanistan.

    10. REGULATION: Biden falsely said McCain weakened regulation — he actually called for more regulation on Fannie and Freddie.

    11. IRAQ: When Joe Biden lied when he said that John McCain was “dead wrong on Iraq”, because Joe Biden shared the same vote to authorize the war and differed on the surge strategy where they John McCain has been proven right.

    12. TAX INCREASES: Biden said Americans earning less than $250,000 wouldn’t see higher taxes, but the Obama-Biden tax plan would raise taxes on individuals making $200,000 or more.

    13. BAILOUT: Biden said the economic rescue legislation matches the four principles that Obama laid out, but in reality it doesn’t meet two of the four principles that Obama outlined on Sept. 19, which were that it include an emergency economic stimulus package, and that it be part of “part of a globally coordinated effort with our partners in the G-20.”

    14. REAGAN TAX RATES: Biden is wrong in saying that under Obama, Americans won’t pay any more in taxes then they did under Reagan.

I love this election, it is simply the greatest entertainment going! Way better than anything Hollywood has come up with lately, except perhaps “Get Smart” ROTFLMAO Funny! If you haven’t seen it, you gotta see it — therapy for the soul.

  6. Palin definitely has a GWB quality about her — someone you’d love to have be your friend or co-worker.

She doesn’t look as nearly as dumb unedited as the media makes her look. Which says more about the media than about her. They’re already chopping up the debate performance into choice bits and pieces though.

The best part of the debate for me was that it produced some pretty funny liveblogs. The best one I found was Wil Wilkinson, possibly the funniest liveblog ever.

    Phil (6d9f2f)

  7. Well, just to be fair, Ahmadinejad doesn’t control the security apparatus of Iran, the theocracy does. Ahmadinejad isn’t, in this case, the relevant leader.

    A dodge, to be charitable.

Which, of course, raises the question: should we meat with Kahmenei and crew without preconditions? The answer is probably still no.

    Fritz (2d9fe6)

  8. I thought Palin missed a chance on Biden’s best line… the one about the bridge to nowhere… she shoulda retorted “oh, OK then you and Obama are gonna support and vote for McCain’s health plan. Thanks”

They should put that gaffe in an ad

    SteveG (71dc6f)

  9. Meet, not meat. Israel might turn them into meat if they don’t dial back on the whole nuclear annihilation thing.

    Fritz (2d9fe6)

  10. ObambiBiden will continue to spew lies about what they want to do as long as they know the media extension of the DNC will continue to cover their ass.
Libs have to lie to the American public, no-one would ever vote for them if they told the truth.

And, getting in to read Comments, or post same, is an excercise in futility; SLOOOOOOW…SLOOOOOW…SLOOOOOW!

    AOracle (44565b)

  11. Patterico: You are too kind. Barack Obama’s own website – remember that place where all his supporters tell you where to go to learn about his policies that they don’t know either – tells you this about his policy on Iran.

Diplomacy: Obama supports tough, direct presidential diplomacy with Iran without preconditions.

  12. I take it that Biden’s point was that meetings should be between the US and the mullahs.

  13. The question is whether the media will bother to focus on who told the truth in the post-debate spin, or if they will focus instead on Biden’s unbreakable smugness and attention to detail.

“Hey, who cares if those details were true or false? He looked good saying it.”

    Daryl Herbert (4ecd4c)

  14. Obama never said he would sit down with them, only that he would meet with them. They could always meet standing up. See, Biden didn’t lie!

  15. It was nice of Biden to confirm Cheney’s contention that the V-P is a member of the Legislature; why else would he cite Article I if that wasn’t so?
Did those hair-plugs let his brains drain out?
    LMFAO!

I don’t blame Biden for retelling that line, because after briefly mentioning early last week that he was one of the few speaking up for greater oversight of the FM’s, McCain has avoided talking about it, and that magnificent viral video has done the job his campaign should have done.

I’m wondering if there is a specific reason why McCain doesn’t want to go there, because it’s a winning issue. Since we’re using baseball metaphors today: It’s a hanging curveball. Why not whack it into the upper deck?

    L.N. Smithee (e1f2bf)

  18. Regarding my 12:44 post (#17) — I may have my answer from U.S. News, h/t Michelle Malkin. It looks as if McCain’s tiptoeing around the details because a) he’s not good at relating wonkspeak and b) the facts indict the Congressional Black Caucus.

    L.N. Smithee (e1f2bf)

  19. If you accept Biden’s parsing, then the only conclusion is that Obama agreed to meet, without precondition, with the Mullahs in Tehran.

Does anyone feel better about that?

  20. Biden rewrote the Constitution last night and all those snobby media types who “know it all” didn’t get it.
They didn’t catch Biden on his rewriting the history of Lebanon either.

    Huh Go figure.

I understand Biden’s reluctance to accept Sarah Palin into the Senate. Harry Reid, Biden, Kennedy (if he’s blessed with the health to continue), Kerry… they do not want a strong conservative charismatic female figure presiding over them.

On Lebanon and Hezbollah, Michael Totten totally blew Bidens BS apart.

Bidens been in Washington most of his adult life.
Palin was in Wasilla, AK until a couple years ago.
Biden has been immersed in this stuff, but he has no clue.
Palin has had about 5000 miles between her and Washington, and if Biden’s bald faced lies mixed with ignorance is the result of being in Washington, then we need to bring more Sarah Palin’s into the mix to counterbalance the shitstorm of nonsense that guys like Biden spew.

By the way, at the end of the clip on youtube about no coal, Biden clearly is telling an environmetalist woman “no coal plants in America”
Clearly. He did not seem to misspeak at all. The context was clear and the statement was direct.

    SteveG (71dc6f)

  21. I realize that Palin threw out a shitstorm of nonsense herself in some interviews.
I can excuse someone put on the spot 4 weeks removed from Juneau, AK who simply does not know. If I was her new boss, I’d just tell her to slow down, take your time…. she’s a star. She’ll get it fast.

    But Biden?
No excuse. 36 years of total immersion in this stuff and he just blows hard. What a wind bag.
He reminds me of the old school bank branch VP who has about 10 leftover bigtime customers whom he takes golfing and then to lunch.

I’m interested in this “getting paid” part. Heck, I’m just doing it to be patriotic. I’d love to get paid for it. I can’t stand watching the GOP destroy our country.

You have any details or is it just more GOPer utter nonsense?
