FBI Serves Warrant on Hacking Suspect

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 5:28 pm

WBIR in Knoxville reports:

The FBI is stepping up its investigation into the possibility that a University of Tennessee student hacked into the personal e-mail of Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

A person who identified himself as a witness tells 10 News that agents with the FBI served a federal search warrant at the Fort Sanders residence of David Kernell early Sunday morning. Kernell lives in the Commons apartment complex at 1115 Highland Ave.

David Kernell is the son of Mike Kernell, a Democratic state representative from Memphis.

Service of a search warrant does not equal guilt, and I reiterate that the true hacker may have misdirected authorities to this young man. Or, he could be the hacker. We don’t know, but it’s worth keeping an eye on the situation.

  1. I think it’s significant that the father of the suspect has made several statements to the media since the story broke. However, none of the statements I’ve seen has contained any sort of denial of guilt.

  2. Thank you for the reiteration. I am concerned about the tendency for many people to assume guilt and/or to consider their own opinion as evidence of guilt.

A chip off the old blockhead.

If it turns out that the kid did it, then they better prosecute the hell out of this, as substantial punishment is the only way to deter this kind of criminal behavior that gets easier to execute by the day.

  4. Wait….I’ll be the first…

“Fry him!!! Take him out and quarter him into 5 smaller pieces, and feed him to wild dogs!!! Confiscate his computer and do wireless searches on everyone who is in his address box!!! Have the IRS investigate his supposedly Rep. father!!!

There, that should cover all the things that conservatives will be accused of wanting to happen over the next couple of hours on this string…..

(I’m trying to find the scene from Planet of the Apes where the Cult of the Bomb take off their masks and reveal their true selves to their maker, so that I can show everyone how we conservatives do that….)

  5. Boy, that negative campaign of Obama-Biden to ridicule Sarah Palin is really working well. Only 60,000 turned out today to see her. Or 70,000 if you believe the fire marshall. Looks like Florida won’t be close.

  6. I would not have wanted the FBI coming to visit me during college.

  8. The rule should be that computer hacking laws don’t apply to companies like Yahoo who have the most retarded security measures ever. It is nearly FREE for them to switch to SSL access only, but they don’t do it. To change a user’s password, all you need is birthday, zipcode and answer to the secret question.

My anger is directed towards privacy advocates such as eff.org who’s idea of privacy advocacy is to subpoena the government to get documents describing wiretaps. Privacy advocates eff.org proudly write about how the 1st amendment allows people to publish Palins *private* email. WTF? Outrage needs to be directed at yahoo, google, microsoft, and PGP, for never solving the encrypted email problem.

You send your messages through USPS on the back of a postcard and someone reads it. Is that a security violation? How about if you use an envelope with 40% transparency.

  12. What lovie doesn’t get….conservatives have no problem with the truth….we just wish the MSM and the liberals that worship there would have the same belief….

Prithee, whilst thou may be among the fairest in countenance, thou may also be lacking in the finer points of cognitive function. Now I beg of thee to make haste, and taketh thyself to a font of greater learning, lest thou be mistaketh for the village idiot.

  15. *sigh* Okay. I will do it. If you are going to make an attempt on speaking ancient English, you should at least try to not mess it up.

Should read, ” and take thyself to a font of cognitive learning.” You should attempt to be cognitive enough yourself.
lest Dmac be mistaketh for the village idiot.
Should read, ” Lest I, Dmac be mistaken for the village idiot I am.”Can’t keep cleaning up your mess you know.

  16. It’s a parody, you toffee – nosed git. You’re allegedly British, yet somehow miss the subtext. How does that oft – used expression go? Oh, yes – brilliant!

    And you sound German.
    Heil Hitler!

    love2008 (1b037c)

  18. There it is!!! The infamous “Hitler” slur…

And, it only took 2 hours, 13 minutes…

    A new world’s record!!!!!

  19. I recall an old German saying that is apropos to the moonbats barking here. He who digs graves for others, falls in himself. The old glass house thing.

How much play will the Axelrod news get from the Dalilama-obsessed media? And will B. Hussein throw Axelrod under that big bus?

  20. Dmac…
    I think “village idiot” is a little harsh;
perhaps “village dolt” might be more accurate?

  23. You know, it is easy for this very blog patterico.com to switch to encrypted-only access, but it does not. It is not even difficult or expensive for patterico.com to switch to https, but it does not. ISP’s get to monitor everything. Data encryption is a form of liberty; a form of privacy. In 2008, encryption is not hard, not “above my pay grade” as everyone would have us believe.

    Funny how that works.

They’re encrypted with ignorance, which affords the originating commenter greater liberty – with the facts.

Welcome, Searcher of deep things. To decrypt my knowledge, you need to be properly initiated. I will give you a clue. He that seeketh, findeth. Now, take a deep breath and say “Love2008” for at least 500 times. At the end you will see a bright new light. 🙂

    He/she/it is just being bitchey.
    And, this to shall pass.

    Aw, who cares.

  30. i love how they can track down a hacker over some politicians b.s. email but we cant stop child porn. i guess thats not important enough.

    glb086 (d671ab)

  31. What makes this kid look so guilty is the behavior of the Democrat party and their supporters since 2000. O’Reilly has been hacked and the left justifies it.

The son of Rep. Gwen Moore, D-WI, and 4 others were caught and convicted of slashing tires of vans rented by the local GOP to take voters to the polls.

Sen. Chuck Schumer does not fire 2 of his staff who split time between his Senate staff and the Democrat Senate Campaign Committee when they are caught stealing MD Lt. Gov. Michael Steele’s identity to get financial information to use against him in his US Senate bid.

    Need I go on?

Then you have hacks like Lovey defending this, asking that we not look too closely. The Democrats as a whole are unhinged and dishonest. I will not change my mind until they start cleaning house.

OH, I still remember Bob Beckel and Bob Mulholland trying to black mail the Electoral College Electors to vote for Gore in 2000. Democrat slime!

  32. Why don’t the FBI issue the warrants in Troopergate

    Can anyone one say Impeachment

    White Male (3e9082)

  33. AND, the FBI is involved because what Federal Crime is at question?

    DORK!
