Patterico On Fire!!!

Just a quick note to suck up to the boss here.

A few weeks back the proprietor of this site mused aloud that he was questioning how much he wanted to continue investing his time and effort in running down important stories that take a TON of work.  Original reporting on under-covered stories is what animates him, and it was that kind of work by him that brought me here more than two years ago as a reader and commenter.

Well, as we have seen over the past few days — and as is evidenced by the site traffic which has overwhelmed the server for this blog a few times over the last several days — we should all be happy that he’s found another subject that has put him back in fighting trim.  He’s been linked several times on huge-traffic sites – today Dean Barnett did so indirectly over at The Weekly Standard Blog – and the work he’s been putting into his eviscercations of Andrew Sullivan deserves all the attention he’s been getting.

It was a great honor when he asked me to come onboard as a guest blogger about 18 months ago, and its been a lot of fun.  I’ve had a lot of conversations with him over that time period, and he’s a genuinely great guy.  There’s really no purpose to this post that to point out what we all have seen over the last few days — Patterico has been on fire and its been great fun to be a part of it.

I was so incensed after reading an Obamapod’s link to a Washed-up Post article saying Sarah Palin had “slashed” funding for a housing facility for single teenage mothers that I blew off my plans yesterday afternoon to thoroughly debunk it. How much harder it must be for him if he’s got to start from scratch! Pat’s righteous questioning of the LAT’s take on DNA testing was VERY important. So was his legwork on Chuck Philips and Anthony Pellicano.

If I was wearing a hat, I would tip it to Pat.

Totally agree. Used to be my 10th or so stop when surfing, now it’s the first. Kudos to all of you doing the good work.

  8. I was very pleased, as always, to link Patterico to my own high-traffic site today, myself.

  9. I’d appreciate you guys more if you’d cover the issue of whether Palin is honestly for or against earmmarks and big government (why the hell did she support the bridge to nowhere, for instance?). I understand that Obama is such a liberal villain that even an unprincipled novice for the Right side is preferable, but still…some intellectual honesty would be nice.

  10. Motzi, evidently you are not really reading the blog.

  11. Motzi — I’ve got a point of view on this, and when I have time I’ll put up a post.

In a nutshell, I think there is a fundamental difference between:

    1) a Washington official who has control of the purse-strings and uses that power to fund projects of dubious necessity, where the real motive for doing so is to curry favor with those who have an interest in the project; and

    2) a local politician who looks to the federal government to assist in funding local projects that ARE legitimate and necessary, but where the costs outstrip the ability of the locality to pay for. The citizens of that community are sending a lot of money to Washington in the form of their tax dollars, too much of which is wasted.

Whether Palin abused the earmark process as a mayor and/or governor depends on the nature of the projects she sought money for. Or do you think the work done by the Army Corps of Engineers on the New Orleans area levies were unnecessary earmarks?

  12. Re: all the money appropriated over decades for the NOLA levies. Do we have any idea how much was diverted to line the pockets of local pols while actual levy work was shoddily done or even ignored?

This site has become my favorite as well. Mr. Frey is a treasure to at least the citizens of S. California. The LATs should be sending him a regular check.

  13. Patterico is a real mensch. If he ever runs for public office, I’m going to send him a modest contribution.

  14. WLS> That is a good point, and I wouldn’t argue that we should never rely on the federal piggy bank for much-needed causes. I’m just jaded from the discrepancy in Palin’s positions on the Bridge to Nowhere. I could give a sh** about her kids, her motherhood, her religion, whatever, I want the first media interview to cover her governance and politicking.

    Motzi (dbfcb4)

  15. whatever, I want the first media interview to cover her governance and politicking.CNN and other MSM types today were complaining there was no access to Sarah .Talking points?
