No More Site Outages? (UPDATE: Answer = Yes. Yes More Site Outages)

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 8:16 pm

Armed Liberal phones to say: “Your website is all better.” A tech guy looked at it today and found a bunch of runaway processes. Also, he said, the server wasn’t well configured for large traffic.

The proof of the pudding is in the next big link. Keep your fingers crossed: the outages may be over.

UPDATE: Isn’t irony great? There was an outage within an hour of the publication of this post.

Sigh. I’ll keep you updated. The next time the problem is Definitely Fixed, I’ll tell you again.

  1. S’allright. Some things are worth waiting for. I believe most everyone here believes this site is one of them.

  2. This is good news.

  3. The problems were growing pains. All great blogs go through them. I’m glad to hear things are improving and that this blog is popular enough to have these kinds of issues.

I hope this blog makes some money!

  4. There are several kinds of people you want to be wary of believing.

Trust your used-car salesman, your community organizer, and the guy with all the watches on his wrist before you trust the computer dood that says all the problems have been fixed.

At any given moment, all the problems have not been identified, much less fixed.

  5. Get a backup site. And hope you never have to use it.

Put the PayPal link up and you’ll get some $$$ from me, and I hope from others. There’s even a free hosting site, Freehostia.com, which looks like it could accommodate WordPress.

  6. High volume sites use mirrored servers with load balancing routers to distribute the traffic. This is, of course, more expensive. You would have to move to a more industrial-strength hosting provider like rackspace.com, and you might need to engage someone to keep an eye on the technical issues — I’m not sure how much handholding you get from such hosts.

  7. For the first time since i have been visiting this site (maybe 2 yrs?), it would not load.
