  1. What, you’re not going to live blog it, DRJ?

    Paul (ac3cf3)

  2. Going one-on-one with O’Reilly might be above his pay grade.

    Icy Truth (8d362f)

  3. Great line from McCain as they are taking out a Code Pinko (paraphasing): “Don’t be distracted by noise and static…”

    Paul (ac3cf3)

  4. Not really. I can’t live-blog the speech because I’m going back and forth between that and football.

How do protesters get in the convention? There was one yesterday, too.

    DRJ (7568a2)

  5. These protestors should be embarassed. Such asshats. But useful asshats. They are making McCain look great, classy.

    JD (5f0e11)

  6. That’s two keyboards in two days, Icy!

    Paul (ac3cf3)

  7. Nice. Code Pink fucks trying to disrupt things. The crowd is chanting “USA, USA”; they should be encouraging the cops: “Tase them, bro! Tase them, bro!”

    Icy Truth (8d362f)

  8. DRJ, what game are you watching?

    Paul (ac3cf3)

  9. OMG, those Code Pinkers – why are they always so unattractive? It must be a pre-req to join the club… ew.

    Dana (084de8)

  10. IVAW and Code Stink are scum. Did anybody on our side try to mess with the Messiah? Not that I heard of. I hope they do more than just catch and release. Throw these a-holes in jail.

    PDizzle (cb6b9b)

  11. I like McCain’s line about looking forward to introducing Palin to Washington.

    SPQR (26be8b)

  12. C’mon, Paul! I’m just getting warmed up . . . heh heh heh

    Icy Truth (8d362f)

  13. What the hell prompts an alleged adult to make a spectacle of themselves like those idiotic protesters? The dimwit children in the streets to some extent I can give a pass to. These full grown creatures whose lives are so devoid of value that they throw public tantrums in the name of some cause should go wait for the next arrival of Hale Bopp.

    Jack Klompus (b0e238)

  14. I haven’t seen the O’Reilly interview yet, but I did see the AP quoting Obama saying this:

“I think she’s got a compelling story, but I assume she wants to be treated the same way that guys want to be treated”

Seems to me that he’s skating a real thin line there between saying “don’t play the sexism card” and “you don’t belong here because you’re a girl”.

    Thoughts?

    Teflon Don (0d1e49)

  15. McCain is as good as we can hope for tonite.

    Anyone watch Baracky on O’Reilly?

    JD (5f0e11)

  16. He is almost talking too much about her now. We want to see him. He has turned it pretty well, though. He had a good line; when he introduces her to Washington, they will know that change is coming. Good line. He needs to run against Congress, I think, and he seems to going that way now. Getting more lively.

    Mike K (2cf494)

  17. “No-spin zone”? With Obama there, it should be the ‘sit-and-spin zone’.

    Icy Truth (8d362f)

  18. How do protesters get in the convention?

It looked like she had her pink garb hidden under a dark blazer she took off. Thankfully she stopped at the jacket.

McCain didn’t miss a beat. More proof for the left that he’s still lucid and sharp and quick with the comeback.

    Dana (084de8)

  19. McCain’s not only defining himself, he’s smacking down Obama’s charge of ignoring economics.

    Paul (ac3cf3)

  20. The protestors get in using media credentials given to them by dishonest media people.

    SPQR (26be8b)

  21. Re Obama/Bill, his “big” interviews always turn out the same. Huge build-up, weak interview, then a fawning “Thanks for being brave and comming on the show!” from Bill.

    PDizzle (cb6b9b)

  22. Notice how McCain responded to the Cold Pukes with this particular term: brown noise.

    As in: shit-talkers.

    Icy Truth (8d362f)

  23. Those protestors are only mildly worse, or even different, than Olber”I am a dishonest”man

    JD (5f0e11)

  24. “I think she’s got a compelling story, but I assume she wants to be treated the same way that guys want to be treated”

Why does he even care how one of his opponents wants to be treated? Is he feeling out the situation, putting his finger in the air and seeing which way the wind is blowing???

If you’re in a hard battle for POTUS and the goal is to win, the last thing I think one would care about is how that opponent wants to be treated. I think he showed his hand.

Of course, being its Obama, he could have meant something entirely different….

    Dana (084de8)

  25. JD – Do you think Olberdouche can talk MasCow into doing so chick on chick stuff on air?

    daleyrocks (d9ec17)

  26. MadCow

    daleyrocks (d9ec17)

  27. If Olberdouche and MadCow did it, that would be chick-on-chick.

    Icy Truth (8d362f)

  28. Icy – Great minds, and all …

McCain is good tonite. Different than Fred, Rudy, Gov. Palin, but good.

    JD (5f0e11)

  29. Loved the line (parphrasing) “nothing is greater and brings more happiness than to serve a cause greater than yourself.”

    Paul (ac3cf3)

  30. What the hell prompts an alleged adult to make a spectacle of themselves like those idiotic protesters?

It’s because they know in their hearts their positions are so weak that they don’t DARE let the other side speak.

    Steverino (1dda08)

  31. What did the heckler say tonight before John Mccain said “Ignore the Ground Noise” ?

    Justin (43f9a1)

  32. Hey look- it’s fireworks, Beijing style!

    Teflon Don (0d1e49)

  33. I think it translated to “look at me, I’m a moron”, Justin.

    SPQR (26be8b)

  34. They’re playing “Barracuda”!!! Yes!

    Icy Truth (8d362f)

  35. 31. I remember when Bush 41 came to Philly and the entire main street through downtown outside his hotel was covered in protesters. Members of ACT-UP deliberately incited a mini-riot and then immediately had the entire game plan mapped out for how to blame the police for the incident. They were so rehearsed that they really made it seem like they believed their complete utter bullshit story and the media ate it up all the way. The protester “scene” is a really lame, stupid, shallow, social club that would suffer tremendous feelings of loss and neuroses if the problems they acted like they cared about ever were solved.

    Jack Klompus (b0e238)

  36. This was not McCain’s ideal venue – but he did better than I expected. But when he gets into the TownHall debate? Look out, Messiah.

    Dmac (874677)

  37. Great stuff on PMSNBC. Convention-goers on the floor keeping Andrea Mitchell covered up by balloons so she can’t do her interview. Looked like they were giving her crap while doing it as well. Hostile territory news-skank? Ha Ha.

    Marty Farty (34813e)

  38. I’m just remembering what McCain said that was so like the man himself; he mentioned that “we’ve lost our way,” in terms of spending, earmarks, etc. That’s a typically ballsy thing for him to say in front of his own freakin’ delegates. Exactly what he needs to do in order to get the independents this election.

    Dmac (874677)

  39. I saw the O’Reilly interview. Biggest gaffe: when asked if he believed Iran was part of the component (terrorism), Obama said no! It’s Sunni and Shia, and blah, blah…

    Fox video

    Patricia (ee5c9d)

  40. Patricia, Obama really is quite incompetent.

    SPQR (26be8b)

  41. CSPAN switched over to the phone lines and the very first caller they took was this total stoner sounding guy who came on and said, “Uh yeah I’m um uh a Republican and I’m um votin’ for Obama…” followed by trained parrot talking points. How far over the shark has the Moby concept jumped?

    Jack Klompus (b0e238)

  42. I was surprised at how hard McCain went after the Republicans who lost their way. Good on him.

Is there a transcript of Baracky on O’Reilly anywhere?

    JD (5f0e11)

  43. My favorite – I will veto it. I will make them famous, and you will know their name.

    JD (5f0e11)

  44. JD,
Go to the main page and look at the videos listed in the lower right hand corner. Barry’s analysis of Iran was stunningly incompetent, as SPQR mentioned. How can he say something so dumb?

    Obama link

    Patricia (ee5c9d)

  45. Thanks, Patricia. The video crashed my Centro. Getting an Instinct tomorrow.

    JD (5f0e11)

  46. Paul,

I don’t have control of the remote control. We’re flipping between the Convention, Vandy-SC and a high school game, Westlake-Lake Travis.

    DRJ (7568a2)

  47. DRJ – are you in the Austin area?

    Jack Klompus (b0e238)

  48. I thought Sen. Obama looked like a kid that had been called into the Principal’s Office to explain himself. I’d love to know what the body language was all about.
And no, IMHO, he didn’t manage to explain much at all.
FYI, there will be three more segments airing on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

    rsb1 (92fd54)

  49. I hate to be a wet blanket, but this does seem anticlimactic after last night. McCain simply is not an inspiring speaker.

    Patterico (cc3b34)

  50. Agreed. But he was good enough.

    Icy Truth (8d362f)

  51. He got better.

    Patterico (cc3b34)

  52. He was almost going somewhere when he said he hated war. But he needed to say more clearly: if we lose this war, our military credibility will be gone — and that is not a recipe for staying out of war. It takes away our leverage.

    Patterico (cc3b34)

  53. #51 – Agreed. He did improve.

I liked his stance on education, but I would have liked to see him link education reform with economic prosperity. It’s not a single administration’s timeline, but it has to start somewhere. He was dead on about our institutions being 50 years out of touch, and the necessity for change – It communicates that he gets it.

As for being a wet blanket, don’t worry, Palin hit it out of the park, and Obama’s speech was a bit anticlimactic as well.

    Apogee (366e8b)

  54. Education policy is without a doubt an area where McCain should hammer the living hell out of Obama. I wonder why Obama’s lackeys are so militant about keeping the Annenberg Project out of the public eye? The public school system is a borderline criminal enterprise in large cities that has been complicit in keeping the underclass in big cities in their sad state of affairs, and Chicago’s is one of the most notorious examples of this.

    Jack Klompus (b0e238)

  55. Could one of you intellectual types please explain to me what the hell this is all about.

    John McCain acceptance speech tonight.

“Government assistance for the unemployed workers was designed for the economy of the 1950s. That’s going to change on my watch….For workers in industries that have been hard-hit, we’ll help make up part of the difference in wages between their old job and a temporary, lower paid one, while they receive re-training that will help them find secure new employment at a decent wage.”

Is he a left wing, limp wristed, commie, pinko traitor or what the heck is this all about.

    Thanks in advance.

    jharp (ef54fc)

  56. #55 – Is he a left wing, limp wristed, commie, pinko traitor or what the heck is this all about.

The internet is apparently eating question marks.

    Apogee (366e8b)

  57. Do you honestly want to get into tortured syntax arguments regarding speechifying by the candidates?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxBX8sz3tO8

Just for an example. I hate it when those TelePrompters quit, don’t you?

And why wouldn’t Senator Obama agree—as he did originally, on tape—to a mess of townhall meetings with Senator McCain? “Anywhere, anyplace” quickly changed.

    Eric Blair (9847a0)

  58. jharp,

McCain’s point is that government should provide programs where people who lost jobs in declining industries will have access to job training with skills that help them get jobs in modern, expanding industries.

It’s a “teach them to fish instead of give them a fish” concept, but I suspect you knew that.

    DRJ (7568a2)

  59. Honest, DRJ, you are always so pleasant. I’m just cranky from teaching freshmen, but I wish I had a large stock of whatever it is that makes you calm and nice. It reminds me of the famous line of Jimmy Stewart’s from the movie (and play) “Harvey” (though, you ARE very smart):

Years ago my mother used to say to me, she’d say, “In this world, Elwood, you must be” – she always called me Elwood – “In this world, Elwood, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant.” Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant. You may quote me.

I recommend pleasant, too. I just can’t manage it some days!

    Eric Blair (9847a0)

  60. DRG,

    Kindly review.

    McCain”s exact words.

“For workers in industries that have been hard-hit, we’ll help make up part of the difference in wages between their old job and a temporary, lower paid one, while they receive re-training that will help them find secure new employment at a decent wage.”

    Key words.

“we’ll help make up part of the difference in wages”

    Your response.

“McCain’s point is that government should provide programs where people who lost jobs in declining industries will have access to job training with skills that help them get jobs in modern, expanding industries.”

Honest to God I find it unfathomable what the GOP apologists try to justify.

How is it it that it has come to this. Are GOPers completely bankrupt or are they that dam dumb?

    jharp (ef54fc)

  61. Honest to God I find it unfathomable what the GOP apologists try to justify.

Seriously, jharp, how did someone with an import/export business and deep economic knowledge get to be so obtuse?

    Paul (ac3cf3)

  62. OK, then Mr. Paul,

Why don’t you kindly explain to me what Senator McCain meant with those words?

I’d be grateful that you helped me become less obtuse.

    jharp (ef54fc)

  63. This seems pretty straightforward to me. Most workers who lose their jobs receive unemployment benefits, and McCain is saying they will continue to receive those benefits while they are retraining.

    DRJ (7568a2)

  64. Why don’t you kindly explain to me what Senator McCain meant with those words?
I’d be grateful that you helped me become less obtuse.
    Comment by jharp — 9/4/2008 @ 10:14 pm

Sounds like instead of letting people ride unemployment and collect welfare, they’ll get on-the-job training in a skilled-career environment. Hence, DRJ’s “teach a man to fish” statement. What is your problem with that exactly?

    Stashiu3 (460dc1)

  65. #60 – Are GOPers completely bankrupt or are they that dam dumb?

We’re smart enough to spell damn.

There’s been a blitz of commenters questioning the intelligence of the GOP within the past hour and every one of their comments contains misspelled words, poor grammar, or both.

    Is this a financial question?

    Apogee (366e8b)

  66. Eric,

I love Jimmy Stewart movies and I won’t pick one above another, but if I did Harvey might be my favorite. There were so many layers to that script and his performance.

    DRJ (7568a2)

  67. That was in the days that Hollyweird had actors. Right? There are so many wonderful movies with the man.

I think about “Harvey” every time I am in a bar. Never seen a pooka, however.

    Eric Blair (9847a0)

  68. Again McCain’s exact words.

“we’ll help make up part of the difference in wages between their old job and a temporary, lower paid one, while they receive re-training that will help them find secure new employment at a decent wage.’

And I get the two responses below.

This seems pretty straightforward to me. Most workers who lose their jobs receive unemployment benefits, and McCain is saying they will continue to receive those benefits while they are retrain.

Sounds like instead of letting people ride unemployment and collect welfare, they’ll get on-the-job training in a skilled-career environment. Hence, DRJ’s “teach a man to fish” statement. What is your problem with that exactly?

When you lay your head on your pillow tonight please, for the sake of all of us, give some some serious consideration regarding your defense of McCain’s claim.

They are both utterly absurd. And hurt the GOP.

    jharp (ef54fc)

  69. They are both utterly absurd. And hurt the GOP.

No one is that stupid, jharp.

I think you are displaying dishonest obtuseness.

    Paul (ac3cf3)

  70. jharp,

I wasn’t defending anything, was I?. You asked:

Why don’t you kindly explain to me what Senator McCain meant with those words?

and I explained what I believed was meant, then asked why it would be a problem for you. You haven’t even given an explanation of what you thought it meant. What’s the problem with my summary or DRJ’s? If it’s true that you don’t understand yet, you have no business criticizing until you can show what we were unclear about. If you do understand (as I’m sure you do) and are just being a troll, begone. Either way, you’ve shown you’re not worth talking to and should be ignored.

    Stashiu3 (460dc1)

  71. Paul,

What the hell are you talking about?

Why don’t you explain what Senator McCain meant with these exact words?

“we’ll help make up part of the difference in wages between their old job and a temporary, lower paid one, while they receive re-training that will help them find secure new employment at a decent wage.’

I’m well aware it is indefensible while at the same time toeing the party line. But please, give it a shot.

    jharp (ef54fc)

  72. Stash and I tried to respond, jharp, so why don’t you explain why we’re wrong?

    DRJ (7568a2)

  73. Eric…
One of the great differences between movies then, and movies now, is the quality of the writing.
Don’t forget, in the 30’s & 40’s, writers such as William Faulkner, Dorothy Parker, Raymond Chandler, and others were on staff at the studios.
It was an easy, steady paycheck between books; they got to go – and throw – some good parties; and, occassionally they even wrote a good script.

    Another Drew (67986d)

  74. Why don’t you explain what Senator McCain meant with these exact words?

Because it is impossible to explain to someone who utterly refuses to understand.

It’s been plainly spelled out, and you’re the only one who doesn’t get it.

Either you are a complete idiot, or you are feigning ignorance. I vote for the latter.

    Paul (ac3cf3)

  75. Stash and DRJ,

“If you do understand (as I’m sure you do)”

    As I see it.

“we’ll help make up part of the difference in wages between their old job and a temporary, lower paid one, while they receive re-training that will help them find secure new employment at a decent wage.’

“we will help make up the difference in wages” means just what it says. McCain intends to help make up the difference in wages until they secure new employment at a decent wage.

I see this as a government handout.

Just think about it, you rascal deniers, think if Obama would have said the same thing.

You gentlemen are as phony as the day is long.

To be honest, you all, are exactly what repulses me about the GOP.

    jharp (ef54fc)

  76. For 75 years, Dems have accussed the GOP of being the handmaidens of the Capitalists, who didn’t give a fig about the Working Man.
When a GOP leader says he will do something for workers, he gets attacked from the Left as proposing a handout, and being repulsive.
This is why GW’s proposals to find a fix for SS/Medicare went over so well – the Left could not stomach that marquee programs they initiated could be saved from failure by their opponents.
    They’re all assholes!

    Another Drew (67986d)

  77. I see this as a government handout.
You gentlemen are as phony as the day is long.
To be honest, you all, are exactly what repulses me about the GOP.
    Comment by jharp — 9/4/2008 @ 11:38 pm

That’s your “gotcha!”? Let’s count how many ways you’re wrong here.

    First, DRJ is a lady.
Second, I didn’t defend anything, I just defined it as you asked.
Third, a handout is getting something for nothing… that’s not what’s proposed here.
Fourth, I’m not in the GOP.
Fifth, I’m not voting for McCain.
Sixth, the only one who has been phoney here is you for pretending you didn’t understand what McCain said or the explanations given by DRJ and myself.
Seventh, you have no idea what I would say if Obama presented this as a program.
Eighth, you have no idea if Obama would present it because he doesn’t give out anything beyond platitudes.
Ninth, you’re ugly (ok, that one is supposition, but I can’t explain your pathetic trolling any other way.)
    Tenth… Right.Out.Loud.

    Stashiu3 (460dc1)

  78. …and, his Momma wears combat boots – open toed!

    Another Drew (67986d)

  79. Have to apologize for running late, but I was out during the McCain speech, and just finished watching the tape.
One of the best speeches he has probably given.
Just watching the Karl Rove summary…
    interesting point: 67 paragraphs…
    19 on Kitchen-table issues;
    11 on his Bio and personal items;
    8 on Foreign Policy;
    6 on his Maverick status and Reform;
    6 on his Bi-Partisanship;
    6 on Obams, 1 lauditory, 5 contrasting;
    3 on Palin;
    8 Miscellaneous.

But, as we’ll hear from the bots, he wasn’t specific on how he’s going to reform/change the country and take care of ME!

    Another Drew (67986d)

  80. jharp,

It is a government handout. Everything government “hands out” (as opposed to pays for services rendered or goods provided) is a handout. But the American public decided long ago that it would give handouts to people in specific situations, and this isn’t an unprecedented or unusual example.

In fact, it’s similar to programs that provide milk products to mothers-to-be and young children. We’ve decided the ultimate benefit in healthier children is worth the expense, and we’ve made the same cost-benefit decision regarding handouts to people to help them learn new jobs. It’s better for society in the long run if we help people get the skills they need to work in productive, sustainable jobs.

Of course, job retraining programs aren’t the only solutions. Government already offers grants and low-interest school loans. In addition, some people will prefer to incur debt so they can have more control over the kind and location of retraining they receive.

    DRJ (7568a2)

  81. Stashiu3, you’re not voting for McCain?

I was going push for a Zombie Reagan/Patterico ’08 ticket, then decided that Palin would make a better running-mate. Patterico will have to settle for the next opening on the Supreme Court.

    Stashiu3 (460dc1)

  83. Icy, if Stash’s in California or Texas or New York, there’s fairly decent reason to make a protest vote. Even if he thinks Mccain is better than Obama, he may want to keep the GOP on notice that he’s not happy with many of their ways.

I think many Barr supporters feel this way.

Though I prefer Mccain to Barr and am voting for Mccain.

I love how DRJ noted that Mccain meant unemployment benefits during training (which is the obvious interpretation), and someone cried “No!!!! he meant government handout!!!!” What in the hell is unemployment pay if not a government handout?
